Apple spent plenty of time on stage during its WWDC 2019 keynote presentation earlier this week discussing all of the biggest new features it added to iOS 13. This is the software that will power the majority of Apple devices out there for the year to come, so it obviously makes sense that the company wanted to spend so much time focusing on it. When designing armor capable of stopping a bullet, the two most important factors are weight and resistance to penetration, and they’re often at odds with one another. A thick steel plate can stop many projectiles but at some point the weight becomes impractical for most applications.

Now, new research into a novel type of material is showing promise as both an option for powerful protection and a weight-saving replacement for heavy metal plates. It’s a composite metal foam which saves weight but seems to offer protection similar to solid steel, and it could be the next big thing in vehicle armor.

With a whole lot of fanfare, Apple in 2015 introduced 3D Touch to the world and positioned it as one of the flagship features of the iPhone 6s. Years in the making, 3D Touch was supposed to change the way we used our smartphones by completely adding a completely new and intuitive method of UI interaction.

Nearly four years after its introduction, however, it’s fair to say that 3D Touch never quite managed to live up to the hype that accompanied its unveiling. While the feature — which presented users with a variety of contextual options based on the amount of pressure applied to the display — was technologically impressive, it was not readily discoverable or even available on all iOS devices. In light of that, we’re now seeing reports that Apple with iOS 13 has effectively axed the feature altogether in favor of a long press alternative.
