Astronomers discover massive ring of gas circling our black hole

The center of the Milky Way galaxy is somewhere you wouldn’t want to be. We have it pretty easy here on Earth, orbiting our star and staying out of everyone’s way, but deep within the heart of our galaxy, a monster lurks. It’s a supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A* (that’s pronounced “A star”, for the record) and while we can’t exactly see it, we know it’s there thanks to decades of scientific observations of our own galaxy as well as many others.

The intense gravitational pull of the black hole draws in just about everything, but nearby debris it hasn’t yet swallowed up orbits in a pattern called an accretion disk. Now, new research reveals that along with dust and super-heated gases, there’s also a ring of comparatively cooler gases hanging out in the neighborhood.

The FCC is finally taking robocalls seriously

%name The FCC is finally taking robocalls seriously by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai quoted a late Democratic Senator from South Carolina, Fritz Hollings, in an op-ed he penned for USA Today Thursday ahead of a vote by the commission to give carriers new permission to block robocalls by default. The FCC’s vote Thursday was unanimous, a rare thing in the nation’s capital these days, so score one for the fight against what Pai reminded everyone today, in Hollings’ words, is the “scourge of civilization.”

German circus replaced animals with holograms, and it’s awesome

%name German circus replaced animals with holograms, and it’s awesome by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Ah, the circus. It’s a time-honored tradition, but the practice of training animals to do silly things for the amusement of youngsters is definitely old-fashioned, and there are many reasons why it’s not a popular as it once was. The treatment of circus animals is one of the biggest criticisms of modern circus companies, and many people don’t feel that animals should be forced to perform for our entertainment.

Germany’s Circus Roncalli has heard those criticisms and taken them to heart. You can still go to a Roncalli performance and see animals like elephants and horses, only now the animals won’t actually be real, they’ll be high-definition holograms.

%name Apple reportedly interested in acquiring a self driving car startup by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple is currently in the process of acquiring a self-driving car startup called Drive.ai, according to a new report from The Information. The report claims that the acquisition is an “acquir-hire,” which is to say that Apple is more so interested in the company’s employees than the company’s existing technology.

The report further adds that the deal, once finalized, “could result in dozens of Drive.ai engineers ending up at Apple” and that the company’s engineering talent would “boost Apple’s own development of a self-driving vehicle system.”

Google Maps could save your life with new tools for natural disasters

Google Maps is useful for finding directions to a gas station or discovering new restaurants in your neighborhood, but it could also save your life during a natural disaster. On Thursday, Google announced that its SOS Alerts, which were introduced two years ago, are being updated to include real-time visual information and a navigation warning system in times of crisis to help users best understand what they need to do to stay safe.

At first, SOS Alerts would show users vital information about a crisis, including a summary of the event, relevant news stories and Twitter posts, emergency phone numbers, and tips. But following the latest update, Google Maps features “detailed visualizations about hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods” as well.

Best Electric Kettle For Tea

%name Best Electric Kettle For Tea by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you’re a tea drinker, you have several options when it comes to heating your water. You can use a traditional tea pot on the stove top, or you can heat your tea one cup at a time in the microwave. The fastest and most convenient way is likely using an electric kettle, but of course not all electric kettles are created equal. We’ve tested more than a dozen popular models and here, we’ve rounded up our three favorite electric kettles for tea.

Best Stainless Steel Kettle

Anyone looking for a no-frills stainless steel kettle that heats quickly and is durable enough to last for years will find exactly what he or she is looking for in the AmazonBasics Stainless Steel Electric Kettle. It has a water window on the side so you can fill it with the exact amount of water you want, and it heats quickly every time. There’s also an automatic shutoff feature once the water reaches a boil, of course.

AmazonBasics Stainless Steel Electric Kettle – 1-Liter: $20.99

Best Glass Kettle

There are certain things that are must-have features when it comes to electric kettles made of glass. First, you need a high-quality borosilicate glass carafe that resists scratching and scuffing. You also need a stainless steel lid, including the inner part of the lid to ensure that no plastic ever touches the water. The COSORI Electric Kettle is a terrific option that’s stylish and durable. It also heats water in as little as 3 minutes, which is quite impressive.

Best Kettle With Temperature Control

For any purists out there, a standard electric kettle simply won’t do. Why? Because you need to heat the water to different temperatures based on what type of tea you’re drinking. The Miroco Stainless Steel Electric Kettle With Temperature Control is perfect because it has six different temperature settings to cover all the bases: 160°F for delicate teas, 175°F for green tea, 185°F for white tea, 190°F for Oolong tea, 200°F for French press coffee, and 212°F for black tea. It heats up quickly, it has a temperature hold feature for up to 30 minutes, and it has a nice big 1.7-liter capacity.
