VP Out, Sunoco In as NHRA Official Fuel For 2015

The NHRA has announced an agreement whereby Sunoco has been named the official fuel of NHRA beginning in 2015. The following is a response to the announcement by VP’s president, Alan Cerwick:

As NHRA’s official fuel through the end of the 2014 season, VP Racing Fuels will continue to service the remaining NHRA races in the same professional and efficient way we always have.

We are exceedingly proud of our contribution to the quality of NHRA’s on-track product over the last 15 years. Given our support of drag racing throughout our 39-year history, we don’t intend to stop now. In anticipation of NHRA’s decision, we have developed a multi-tiered strategy to increase our involvement in other areas of drag racing and continue our efforts to help grow the sport.

While we are disappointed that our relationship with NHRA will not continue, we want to assure all our customers and the industry at large that this will not affect VP financially nor will it hinder our ability to compete aggressively with industry-leading fuels and other products. VP is a strong company, much different and more diverse than the company that first signed on as the official fuel of NHRA in 2000.

VP is enjoying a strong year in 2014 with increasing sales and domination in many forms of racing all over the world. In addition to fueling the popular Tudor United SportsCar Championship and other IMSA-sanctioned series this year, we just signed on as Official Fuel Supplier to Watkins Glen International in New York, the Isle of Man TT in the UK and extended our relationships with New England Dragway, Maple Grove Raceway, Atco Raceway, DIRTCar and the World of Outlaws. Besides race fuel, our consumer products and VP-branded gas stations are also experiencing robust growth — growth that not only will continue but accelerate in 2015 and beyond.

We wish NHRA good luck and sincerely hope they’ll have success with their racing events in the future. In the meantime we intend to continue executing our strategy for growth, the best of which is yet to come.

Rovio has soft-launched Retry in Finland, Poland and Canada, Arctic Startup reports. The new game is inspired by the legendary Flappy Bird, although it’s not exactly a copy of the hit mobile game. However, Retry is still an 8-bit side-scrolling game that will invariably remind users of its more popular predecessor, even though it brings some new features to the table.

A Toronto teen is in trouble after being caught stunt driving at 240 km/h in a black Nissan GT-R. The speeding driver (identified as 18-year-old Vince Lisi), is facing rather serious charges that include stunt driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to surrender driver’s licence.

According to reports by Global News, the Nissan GT-R was pulled over after being spotted going 140 km/h over the posted speed limit on highway 407 (near Weston road) last night. The stunt driving teenage driver has since had his Nissan GT-R impounded immediately and his licence suspended for seven days.

In Ontario, someone caught going 50 km/h or more over the limit by police faces an automatic six demerit points, vehicle seizure and an immediate seven day licence suspension with additional suspension (of up to two years) upon conviction. The driver can also face a fine between $2,000 to $10,000. Click here to watch the video footage of the pulled over GT-R.

Sony has figured out how to cram 185TB of data onto a single cassette tape

It turns out that audio cassette taps might be the wave of the future after all, at least when it comes to data storage. Forbes reports that Sony has figured out how to cram a whopping 185TB of data onto a single cassette tape using technology called sputter deposition that Forbes says “involves layers of magnetic crystals firing argon ions at a polymer film substrate.” To get an idea of just how amazing this is, consider that a typical Blu-ray disc holds around 50GB of data, which means that Sony’s new storage cassette can hold somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,700 Blu-ray films. Sony says that it’s working on ways to make magnetic tape used in cassettes a practical technology for storage and backup and it hopes to release a commercial product based on its breakthroughs in the future.

Peel and Ford Transit do a great Austin Powers impression

It’s no secret that the average fullsize cargo van is big. Like, really big. Expressing that size, though, without actually seeing the van in question, is a pretty tall order. When viewed from the right angle, even something as big as a cargo van can appear very small (look up forced perspective, to see what we mean).

That’s why it’s always good to have a second object on hand, to provide a sense of scale. Ford took this simple idea to the extreme, illustrating the size of the new Ford Transit by pulling the world’s smallest production car, the Peel P50, nose first into the van’s 13,790-litre (487-cubic-foot) cargo area. That’s no big deal, though, right? After all, at just 54 inches long and 39 inches wide, the Peel would fit quite happily in even the smallest fullsize truck bed.

Ford takes it a step further, though. With the help of an actual reverse gear (we’re guessing this is a CVT-equipped, electric model), the P50 manages to turn itself around and drive out. It does this in less than two minutes. So yeah, the Ford Transit is a pretty big van.

Take a look below for the video from Ford.

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has always been a man of the people, and even in his new role as head of the Xbox division, he still takes time to answer questions from the community on Twitter. In his latest flurry of answers, Spencer confirmed that new IP and new sequels will be announced at E3 and he revealed that Cortana was almost brought on as the announcer for the show. Another interesting topic broached by the community was the potential existence of a portable console from Microsoft to rival the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS.
