Phishing scams keep getting smarter, making them difficult to spot

It’s a sad reality that phishing scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often making it hard for even savvy users to differentiate between legitimate messages and ones designed to abscond with sensitive personal and financial information. Just a few days ago, for example, we covered an iPhone phishing scam that manages to trick users into thinking they’re receiving a legitimate phone call from Apple tech support.

Phone-based phishing scams, though, are arguably a tad easier to detect than web-based phishing scams. That said, scammers over the past few years have done an impressive job of constructing websites that, even upon close inspection, look remarkably close to legitimate sites like PayPal and eBay. Speaking to the trickery that some scammers are implementing with their phishing schemes, Paul Walsh on Twitter today posted a snapshot which illustrates how easy it is for even a cautious user to fall prey to a phishing scam.

Leafcutter ants produce so much gas that they actually rival cow butts

%name Leafcutter ants produce so much gas that they actually rival cow butts by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The fact that cows produce a ton of greenhouse gas in the form of methane is science factoid that people tend to pull out in casual climate discussions (you have those, don’t you?). As it turns out, one of the other major natural contributors of greenhouse gas is a creature that is a whole lot smaller but a lot more numerous.

In a new study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, researchers from the University of Montana reveal that leafcutter ants are also major gas producers, pumping out incredible quantities of a different gas, nitrous oxide.

Back when Epic Games first announced its digital storefront for PC games, the publisher also revealed that it would be giving away a new free game every two weeks for the first year of the platform’s existence. That program kicked off with none other than Subnautica on December 14th, and was followed by Super Meat Boy on the 28th.

Both of those titles were confirmed before they arrived, but every free game from here on out is a surprise. And that brings us to today’s reveal of the third free Epic Games store title: What Remains of Edith Finch. This moody indie game received critical acclaim when it launched in 2017, and it worth adding to your collection.

The storyline for the The Punisher’s upcoming sophomore season on Netflix is coming into clearer focus, now that Netflix has dropped a full trailer after releasing a teaser earlier this month for what’s unfortunately become one of the last two Marvel shows that remain on the streaming platform.

Season 2 of the series about gritty superhero Frank Castle arrives on Netflix a week from tomorrow, and judging by the trailer which you can watch above it looks like this new season will definitely be darker and more intense than the first go-round.

‘Captain Marvel’ will also be the origin story of a different Marvel character

%name ‘Captain Marvel’ will also be the origin story of a different Marvel character by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re less than two months away from the first MCU movie since Ant-Man and The Wasp. I’m talking, of course, about Captain Marvel, which hits cinemas on March 8th. That means we’re going to see an increasing number of promos for the film, including more TV commercials, featurettes, as well as interviews with the cast.

One such interview offered us a huge spoiler not just for Captain Marvel, but also for Avengers: Endgame, which drops in late April. But the same interview revealed that Captain Marvel won’t only be an origin story for Captain Marvel. A second Marvel character will be featured rather prominently in the film as well.

T-Mobile is using a new ‘Caller Verified’ tool to crack down on spammers and scam calls

%name T Mobile is using a new ‘Caller Verified’ tool to crack down on spammers and scam calls by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There are alarming statistics out there about the extent of the spam and scam call problem in the US, with some estimates putting it as high as 50% of all US mobile traffic this year being a scam of some kind. No wonder people are answering the phone less often and using other communication methods, like texting.

The problem is also compounded by the fact that many existing protection apps blacklist known scam numbers, but are helpless when it comes to that other problem you’ve no doubt seen — where a local number gets “spoofed,” with scammers making it seem like a genuine local number is calling you in the hopes that you’ll answer, whereas you might not if it was a toll-free or out-of-town number that showed up. That’s why T-Mobile, today, announced a new tool to fight all the spam and give phone owners a little bit more peace of mind.

IMDb’s new streaming service lets you watch top TV shows and movies for free

%name IMDb’s new streaming service lets you watch top TV shows and movies for free by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu certainly make it easier for us to consume the shows and movies we love. Instead of having to deal with costly monthly bills and a confusing matrix of programming tiers from cable providers, streaming services provide us with a much simpler and affordable alternative. The irony, though, is that the number of streaming services to choose from keeps on getting larger, essentially making the media landscape as confusing and pricey as the cable packages of old.

The latest entrant into the streaming landscape comes from IMDb. Earlier today, the Amazon-owned property launched a brand new streaming site dubbed Freedive. Now I know what you’re thinking: do we really need another streaming site? In a word, no. That said, Freedive is a bit different from current streaming sites insofar that it’s completely free and, in turn, ad-supported.

Archaeologists find ‘intimate’ couple buried in ancient grave

A discovery by archaeologists at a dig site in India has led to a years-long investigation into the deaths of a pair of long-dead lovers. A new research paper describes the discovery of two skeletons which were found side by sided in a grave thought to originate as far back as 4,500 BC.

The remains were found by researchers while excavating a site north of New Delhi, along with the skeletons of several others, but it’s the tale of the shared grave that has captured the most attention. The two individuals, a man in his 30s and woman in her early 20s, are now thought to have been married, but scientists are still left guessing what caused their deaths.

Sprint and T-Mobile will no longer sell real-time location data to third-parties

%name Sprint and T Mobile will no longer sell real time location data to third parties by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In the wake of a bombshell report detailing how carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile sell real-time location data of subscribers to third-parties, both of the aforementioned carriers have since come out and said that they will stop the practice immediately. While it’s long been known that carriers sell location data to certain third-parties for ostensibly reasonable purposes, the practice has become problematic because the data ultimately winds up in the wrong hands.

As an illustrative example, Joseph Cox of Motherboard managed to track down the real-time location of his friend (who was a willing participant in the experiment) for just $300. The report naturally caused concern amongst lawmakers and privacy advocates.
