Google’s Cromecast has been a hit product for the company, offering users affordable access to an Internet-connected device that can play all sorts of content on a big-screen TV — and it’s been inspiring others to create some similar products. One of them is Matchstick, a new Kickstarter hit, that wants to offer users Chromecast-like features for an even cheaper price: $25.

The seemingly ongoing battle between Google and Apple has been well-documented, but it’s always at its best when the CEOs start trading blows. In an interview with Charlie Rose last month, Tim Cook took Google to task for its data collection practices. Unsurprisingly, Eric Schmidt wasn’t too pleased with Cook’s representative of his company, so he took the time to respond on a CNN Money segment this week.

In what appears to be an effort to be more honest with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users, Apple has implemented a prompt in iOS 8 which appears the first time an app is opened, allowing users to decide whether or not they want the app to be able to use location data while running in the background. This might sound like a progressive step for Apple, but it’s beginning to cause problems for some app developers.

Microsoft surprised everyone earlier this week when it announced the name of its next major Windows release, as the company decided to simply skip Windows 9, the name everyone expected to see, and jump directly to Windows 10. The company didn’t really explain that decision, but a Windows developer revealed on Reddit a simple, silly, reason why there’s no Windows 9 – and no, it’s not “because 7 8 9,” no matter what you read on Twitter.

6 easy ways to avoid expensive car repairs

Corbis CB010017 6 easy ways to avoid expensive car repairs by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Filed under:

Is your car making rumbling noises or mysteriously vibrating? Leaking essential fluids? Sending smoke signals? Are warning lights suddenly coming on? Well, they’re all signs that you could be headed for some expensive car repair trouble, and if you’re like most drivers, you could use some help self-diagnosing the source of such problems before they lead to breakdowns and expensive repairs.

First of all, get to know your car’s personality – how it sounds and smells and moves – so that you’ll know when something out of the ordinary occurs. If your vehicle was made after 1995, consider investing in an on-board diagnostics (OBD) reader. They can be had for around $200.00 at Canadian Tire or similar. That doesn’t seem like too much when compared to a dealership charging you the same amount to even read one code. An OBD detects faults in the operation of all engine sensors and systems via the car’s on-board computer, including catalytic converters. It provides a trouble code that will give you a clue to the nature of a problem.

Click here to read our handy checklist on how to identify common problems and avoid costly repairs that affect most cars.

When you have the ability to attach a GoPro Hero 3 onto a DJI Phantom Pro 2 drone, you can have the opportunity film incredible scenes from the air. Filmmakers enjoy using the technique because they normally spend millions renting helicopters to do flyovers and now they can spend significantly less money capturing footage of dangerous situations… such as, say, a volcano erupting.

The first Galaxy Note 4 benchmarks following the phone’s limited South Korean and Chinese launch have emerged and they suggest that while the Galaxy Note 4 may be better than many of other Android devices in certain tests, it may still be lagging behind its main rivals, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Phone Arena has compared scores obtained by the Galaxy Note 4 (Exynos 5433 version) in various benchmark tests with the iPhone 6, and Apple’s handset has scored better in many of them.
