Apple dropped the proverbial mic at today’s event in Cupertino, California. After starting slow with some software demos and updates on iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, the iPhone maker launched into an hour of non-stop reveals, beginning with the iPad Air 2 and ending with a surprise iPad mini announcement. But I simply have to call B.S. on the new iPad mini 3, Apple’s new miniature tablet that barely merited a mention at its press event, and for very good reason: There’s basically almost no reason at all anyone should buy one.

Apple’s 2014 iPad models are incremental updates this year, as we have all expected for months. In fact at this point it seems like everyone knows the drill. The second-generation iPad Air 2 and third-generation iPad mini both feature upgraded specs highlighted by the new A8X processor, and they also finally include Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor that was introduced last year on the iPhone 5s.
Apple fans with last year’s iPad Air or iPad mini might find it a bit difficult to open their wallets for these relatively minor upgrades, but those with a need for speed will definitely want Apple’s latest and greatest. And anyone with an older iPad model or a first-generation iPad mini will definitely want to consider a new tablet.

Thursday’s big Apple event is still going strong, and the company just announced the release date for its brand new iPad Air 2. The device is somehow even thinner than the original iPad Air, the A8X processor is more powerful, the display technology is even better, the 8-megapixel rear camera is better, it has Touch ID, and the graphics are 180x faster than the original iPad. And somehow, despite all the new technology Apple stuff into the tablet, it still gets 10 hours of battery life per charge.

The second Apple event of the fall is underway and the company has already unveiled the iPad Air 2. Next up is the second tablet of the day — the iPad mini 3. The latest iPad mini didn’t get much stage time, but Apple delved into a few specifications: the iPad mini 3 will feature a 7.9-inch Retina display, 5-megapixel iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities, FaceTime HD camera, 802.11n WiFi with MIMO and, of course, Touch ID.

Apple’s iPad event is well underway and the company has just announced its next-generation flagship tablet, the iPad Air 2. As you might expect, the new device is the thinnest iPad Air yet released and measures in at 6.1 millimeters thin, or 18% thinner than the original iPad Air. The new tablet will also be the first device to run on the A8x chip, a new chipset with 3 billion transistors that will deliver an even better performance than the A8 chip found on the iPhone 6. The device also boasts 10 hours of battery life and features an M8 chip with support for a barometer and motion tracking sensors.

New iPads are great and new Mac computers are nice, but truth be told, we’re far more excited about upgrading the Apple gear we already have with the latest and greatest software. Apple has been travelling a somewhat bumpy road lately with iOS, but the brand new version of its desktop platform OS X should be plenty stable after three different Gold Master releases in recent weeks. And now, we know exactly when we can finally get our hands on OS X Yosemite.
