NYC tenants sue landlord for a physical key after he gives them a fancy smart lock

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After a New York City apartment landlord installed a smart lock on the building’s lobby door, a group of tenants filed a lawsuit arguing they should be provided with something else instead — a physical key.

A group of five tenants of a Hell’s Kitchen apartment brought the suit at a time when Latch smart locks have been installed in some 1,000 residential buildings in New York alone, according to one report. In this case, the residents argued that the smart lock has the potential to create privacy concerns, saying that a landlord could use a smart lock to “surveil” and “track” tenants. Also, a 93-year-old resident of the building complained after the lock’s installation that he’s unable to operate it and started to feel like a virtual shut-in.

8 new trailers you need to watch from this past week

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Will the third weekend at the box office help Avengers: Endgame overtake Avatar and become the highest-grossing movie of all time? Considering what happened last weekend, it wouldn’t be surprising, as Avengers keeps bringing in huge piles of cash for Marvel. Opening this week is Pokemon Detective Pikachu, which is probably your best choice in cinemas if you’ve seen Endgame and don’t want to rewatch it. The Hustle and Tolkien are also out this weekend, although you’ll probably catch those on streaming services later this year.

In the new trailers department, we have a brand new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer for you — the first one that actually makes sense — as well as a clip from It Chapter 2.

Nike’s app will use augmented reality to determine your shoe size

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Do you know your own shoe size? You might think you do, but there’s a good chance you’re walking around in shoes that aren’t actually a perfect fit. Nike thinks it can change that with a new addition to its smartphone app that leverages the power of augmented reality to perform a super-accurate scan of your feet, matching you with the ideal size, depending on the kind of shoe you’re shopping for.

In a new blog post, Nike calls out the current system of shoe sizing as “antiquated,” calling it “a gross simplification of a complex problem.” That’s where Nike Fit, the new sizing feature, comes in.

India is going forward with an antitrust case against Google’s Android

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google has lost a number of antitrust cases in recent years, which netted the tech company three record-setting fines in Europe. The European Commission looked at Google’s Search, Android, and online ads practices and found that Google abused its position in the market.

Separately, Russian regulators investigated the same alleged Android abuse, which resulted in a different fine, albeit not comparable to the EU’s. In each case, Google had to make several concessions regarding Android. And now India appears to be Google’s next nightmare when it comes to antitrust investigations.

SpaceX’s recent parachute tests came up short of expectations

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA is desperate for its own transportation solution to send astronauts to and from the International Space Station. It’s paid both SpaceX and Boeing huge sums of money to figure it out, and while both companies have consistently missed their projected milestones with regards to manned spaceflight, SpaceX has successfully completed a (unmanned) trip to the ISS with its Crew Dragon.

SpaceX would seem to be in the lead, which is something that surprised many observers. Boeing, with seemingly endless resources at its disposal, has yet to actually launch its Starliner spacecraft, but a recent hearing of a House subcommittee revealed that a SpaceX misstep may have opened the door for Boeing to step in and win the race to crewed missions into space.

Sony won’t announce the PlayStation 5 anytime soon, but that isn’t stopping the company from teasing its next-generation console. Sony’s lead architect Mark Cerny revealed in an interview last month a few details about the unreleased console, and AMD announced a few days ago that it’s going to make the console’s next CPU and GPU chips that will help out with Sony’s “secret sauce.” A new report now reveals the PS5 will have an “ultra high-speed” SSD — the kind of component that could eliminate loading screens altogether.
