NASA’s floating robot ‘bee’ is alive and well aboard the ISS

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA is betting big on the future of space robots. As automated gadgets become more and more advances, scientists are starting to imagine how robots could not only aid space travelers but perhaps even shoulder some of the load when it comes to various duties.

To explore those possibilities, NASA sent a trio of Astrobee robots to the International Space Station just last month, and the ISS crew is just now getting around to testing them out. In a new post on NASA’s website, the agency teases an early look at the floating bots as astronauts test them out.

New survey finds Netflix original programming is better than HBO’s

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The day after HBO aired the long-awaited series finale of Game of Thrones, Morgan Stanley released the results of research that may give the premium cable network pause. Now that the fantasy series — with its globe-spanning, extremely loyal audience — has taken its final bow, industry watchers have begun speculating about what the future has in store for HBO in a post-Thrones world. Can its existing and forthcoming series like Watchmen, Westworld, Big Little Lies, and so many others hold up in an increasingly fragmented streaming world, especially with deep-pocketed players like Apple and Disney about to enter the fray?

At least according to the just-released Morgan Stanley survey, it seems that HBO is already losing to Netflix in an all-important category.

Someone may have just leaked all of Microsoft’s plans for E3 2019

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In many ways, E3 2019 will be the last hurrah for this video game console generation. Sony has recently confirmed that it is already deep in development on its PlayStation 4 successor, and Microsoft started talking about the future of Xbox a full year ago. Of course, Sony isn’t actually going to be at E3 this year, which gives Microsoft an opening to, at least temporarily, control the narrative. And a new leak suggests it will do exactly that.

Over the weekend, NeoGAF user Braldryr purportedly spoiled Microsoft’s entire E3 2019 press conference, revealing details about all of the games, hardware, and services that will appear at the show. No one has verified this report, so you should take it all with a grain of salt, but if it’s accurate, Xbox fans have a lot to look forward to.

Kit Harrington tells ‘Game of Thrones’ haters that they ‘can go f–k themselves’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After eight years, eight seasons, and an endless amount of bloodshed, plotting, and backstabbing, Game of Thrones finally came to an end last night. As was to be expected given some of the fan reactions from the previous few episodes of season 8, the series finale was largely viewed as lackluster at best, and downright lazy, disappointing, and boring at worst. Driving the point home, fan-rankings on IMDB indicate that the final episode — which was called The Iron Throne — quickly became the least-liked episode in show history.

Truth be told, one would be hard-pressed to find an overwhelmingly positive review of the series finale. Personally — and as someone who genuinely enjoyed both season 7 and the bulk of season 8 — there’s no getting around the fact that the series finale felt hurried, jumbled, and even nonsensical at times.

US intelligence chiefs shared classified info with tech execs about doing business with China

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The trade war with China has reached new heights in the past few weeks, as the Trump administration recently announced that US companies will be banned from buying equipment from certain Chinese companies. Huawei’s name wasn’t explicitly mentioned, but it was obviously implied that China’s biggest tech company is included on the list. Separately, the US government also issued a ban that prevents Huawei from dealing with US tech companies, whether it’s for parts procurement or software licenses. The first effects of that decision are already here, as Google has already said it will comply with the ban, effectively revoking Huawei’s access to the version of Android that everybody wants. Several chipmakers, including Intel and Qualcomm, have also reportedly cut ties with Huawei for the time being.

On top of that, a report reveals that top officials from the US intelligence community have been meeting with tech execs, universities, and trade organizations to brief them about the security perils related to doing business with China.

NASA’s Juno just discovered that Jupiter and Earth have something important in common

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has delivered some of the most stunning glimpses of the gas giant that mankind has ever seen, but it’s also taught scientists a lot about how the planet works. We now know that its storms stretch far deeper into the planet than previously assumed and that Jupiter’s lightning is a lot like the kind we see here on Earth.

Now, data gathered from Juno has shed light on another aspect of Jupiter that seems a lot like Earth. In a new paper published in Nature Astronomy, scientists reveal that Juno’s readings of Jupiter’s magnetic field differ from observations made by past missions. This suggests that the planet’s magnetic field is actually changing in small but important ways, much like the shifts we see in Earth’s own magnetic field.

Bran Stark actor pens essay insisting the ‘Game of Thrones’ ending was perfect

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Isaac Hempstead Wright, the actor with the sometimes maddeningly impassive face who portrayed Bran Stark on Game of Thrones, got perhaps the best ending out of anyone in the series. He went from being pushed out of a window in season 1, crippling him, to a surprise appointment to the Iron Throne in Sunday night’s series finale.

Naturally, he writes in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter, he thinks the show’s finale flawlessly stuck the landing — despite how hard it was for actors like him to constantly remind themselves that this was only a TV show, in spite of how crazy things got.
