Ravens have emotional quirks similar to humans, study finds
Humans have very advanced brains — or at least we think that’s the case based on what we know about life from an admittedly small sample size of a single planet — but we’re not the only creatures on the planet that exhibits complex emotional traits. Ravens, which are known to be incredibly intelligent, are the subject of frequent study, and new research reveals that they have some of the same personality quirks that humans possess.
The research, which was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focused on groups of ravens in a laboratory setting. A complex experiment was devised to determine whether the birds’ emotions could rub off on one another, and the results appear to show that they do.

Key ‘Game of Thrones’ scriptwriter now working on Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series
Now begins the creative diaspora of the Game of Thrones cast and crew as they decide on the projects with which they’ll begin the post-Thrones phase of their respective careers. Already, one such forthcoming project is attracting significant buzz among Game of Thrones fans and devotees of material from the writer who inspired Thrones author George R.R. Martin in the first place. We’re talking, of course, about the Lord of the Rings — specifically, about the mysterious big-budget series set in that world and which is currently in development at Amazon.
We say “mysterious,” because not too much is known at the moment about what the series will entail, other than that this is Amazon’s attempt at notching a potential Thrones-style hit that similarly moves the pop culture needle. And it arguably stands a very good chance of doing that, because all indications are that one of the key Game of Thrones scriptwriters — Bryan Cogman, who’s been described as a right-hand man to the Thrones showrunners and who wrote 11 episodes — is now working on Amazon’s LOTR series.

Now there’s a nasal spray that rapidly crushes depression
Depression affects the lives of a great many people and, while there are plenty of options on the table as far as treatment, many are slow-acting and take days or even weeks before a person feels the benefits. On top of that, a large percentage of people diagnosed with depression don’t respond to many modern treatments.
Now, a new treatment option is gaining acceptance among researchers, and it could provide rapid symptom relief for individuals who have a history of not responding well to other antidepressant medications. The treatment, a nasal spray called esketamine, is the subject of a new research paper published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Comcast is working on an Amazon Echo rival that tracks your health
The cable giant everyone loves to hate is reportedly planning to expand into a hardware category dominated by Amazon and Google, with a device along those lines coming as soon as next year.
Comcast has been working for more than a year now on a healthcare-focused device described as similar to the Amazon Echo, which the company hopes to start a pilot test for later this year. That’s according to a Tuesday report from CNBC, which notes that the device as envisioned wouldn’t be used for tasks like turning on lights or surfing the web.

Surprise! When Los Angeles cleaned up its air, childhood asthma cases dropped
Breathing in toxic fumes every day is bad for you, and when you take those fumes away, you feel better. That’s the gist of a new study published in JAMA, which came to the rather obvious conclusion that kids in Los Angeles exhibited elevated risk of developing asthma because the city used to sit in a massive cloud of car exhaust.
The research, which is actually rather interesting despite seeming a bit obvious, suggests that smog levels in Los Angeles had a direct correlation with the number of cases of childhood asthma. Using data gathered from 1993 through 2014, the paper points to improved air quality levels in a number of communities as being the reason for an overall decrease in the number of asthma cases documented by area doctors.

A web browser you forgot existed might soon be faster than Chrome
Mozilla has dramatically changed the look and feel of its browser since the introduction of Firefox Quantum two years ago now — a release that prefaced the arrival of other new features that promote privacy and speed, like an extension that makes it harder for Facebook to track you. And now today, Mozilla is touting a new Firefox browser update that comes with a big speed boost to try and give Google Chrome a run for its money.

Google built an AI that detects lung cancer better than human doctors
Science fiction has taught us to fear the inevitable rise of digital brains, and while it’s true that handing too much power to machines of our own creation could end badly, AI is proving itself to be an incredible tool for improving lives. The New York Times reports that one such AI, built by Google, is doing some very impressive things.
In a new research paper, an algorithm developed in a partnership between Google and medical professionals has demonstrated its incredible accuracy at detecting lung cancer. The paper, published in Nature Medicine, reveals that the AI is, in some ways, even more accurate than trained radiologists at spotting the telltale signs of cancer in medical scans.
