Mysterious ozone-destroying pollution has been traced to China

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Last year, a report surfaced that suggested someone, somewhere was producing a huge amount of an ozone-destroying chemical which had already been banned worldwide way back in 2010. Scientists knew it was being pumped into the air, but they didn’t know where it was coming from or who was doing it. Now, scientists report that they’re getting much closer to finding the culprit.

A new report published in Nature has traced the source of the ozone-eating trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11) to eastern China. Using global monitoring information and data from locations around eastern Asia, researchers have narrowed down the region where the CFC-11 is being produced, but some questions still remain.

Ransomware attack on Baltimore continues to hold the city hostage

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Earlier this month, hackers successfully deployed a piece of ransomware that, for about two weeks now, has effectively shut down a range of key public services in the city of Baltimore. All told, the ransomware in question has locked down approximately 10,000 government computers. The hackers responsible for the attack — who remain unknown at this point — are demanding 13 bitcoins in exchange for returning things back to normal, a figure that comes out to about $102,000.

The ransomware attack has essentially taken the Baltimore city government hostage. What this means on a practical level is that the city government cannot access email accounts or even process payments to employees. Further, real estate transactions cannot be processed and citizens remain unable to make a range of utility payments.

ARM is the latest tech company to sever ties with Huawei after US import ban

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The US government’s Huawei import ban delivered a massive blow to the most important Chinese smartphone vendor. Under the terms of the ban, Huawei can’t do business with US-based hardware suppliers and software makers. A direct result of the ban is that Huawei might have a harder time manufacturing Android smartphones and tablets, Windows computers, and other networking components that rely on parts from US sellers.

The Trump administration eased the restrictions earlier this week, granting Huawei a license to buy US goods until August 19th. That’s also until when Google can work with Huawei on Android updates. But that doesn’t mean things are looking up for Huawei, at least for the time being, as one more critical partner announced its decision to suspend work with Huawei: ARM, whose mobile chip technology is used by countless handset makers.

Massive double asteroid will cruise by Earth later this week

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Most space rocks that pass nearby Earth are solo travelers making their way around the Sun and slipping past our planet as they do so. Asteroid 1999 KW4, which will make a distant pass of Earth on May 25th, is quite a bit different. The large primary body of the object is thought to be around a mile wide, and it’s large enough that a smaller “asteroid moon” now orbits it.

The smaller “moon” of the larger rock is still fairly sizable on its own, measuring over a quarter mile in diameter. If the double asteroid were to pose a threat to Earth, we’d be in for some serious trouble, but thankfully that’s not the case.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei just made a surprise confession: He’s an Apple fan

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When two Huawei employees got caught using an iPhone earlier this year to send out a “Happy #2019” greeting on Twitter, they were demoted and had to take a pay cut. Not a good look to be seen relying on your American rival’s wares, apparently — and since then, that sentiment has actually escalated in a big way. There are growing calls today in Huawei’s home country of China for a retaliatory ban on Apple products — or, at a minimum, at least a mass exodus from Apple products to homegrown China-made devices in solidarity with Huawei, which Google dramatically cut ties with over the weekend. Heck, even a Chinese diplomat on Tuesday joked on Twitter that Huawei’s logo looks like somebody chopped an apple, hint hint, into tiny pieces.

Which is why, all that said, a confession made by the billionaire founder and CEO of beleaguered Huawei to Chinese state TV on Tuesday is surprising, to say the least — turns out, he’s actually a fan of Apple.

‘Mario Kart Tour’ is a surprisingly faithful take on Nintendo’s popular racing game

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Although Nintendo has more than a few anticipated games set to launch in 2019, few are as intriguing as Mario Kart Tour — a mobile take on the company’s popular kart racing series. This week, Nintendo kicked off a closed beta for the game, and I was lucky enough to score an invite and spend some time with it on Wednesday.

Before I go any further, I want to stress that these are my impressions of the closed beta, which will surely mirror the final product in many ways, and differ in others. I’m going to reserve judgment until we see how Nintendo responds to the criticisms leveled at the game over the course of the beta. That said, I have to admit up front that I’m having a lot of fun with it so far, and I’m surprised how well Nintendo captured the feel of Mario Kart.
