One of the more highly anticipated iterations of Apple’s annual developers conference is underway this morning in San Jose, California, with this year’s WWDC giving Apple the opportunity to show off everything from new software for all of its major platforms — in addition to offering up some surprises. Like the news, leaked right before the start of Monday’s event, that Apple is going to split iOS essentially in half and formulating a new version specific to the iPad.

The company just showed off iOS 13 on stage, which — it’s now official — will include the much-anticipated dark mode feature.

We’re just a few minutes in to Apple’s WWDC 2019 keynote, and we’ve already been introduced to the latest version of tvOS. Up next, the Cupertino company gave us our first look at watchOS 6. Apple started off by showcasing some of its latest watch faces, including a gradient face, a new digital face, and a solar face. It is also now possible to have your Apple Watch play audio chimes, like bird noises, at every hour on the hour.

But then we got the big news: the App Store is coming to watchOS. You can now install apps directly on your Apple Watch which will run independently – without the need for a companion app on your iPhone. Some of the new apps include Audio Books, Voice Memos, and a calculator. Wrapping up the apps section, Apple announced a streaming audio API and an extended runtime API (but Spotify was nowhere to be seen).

Apple is set to kick off its annual developer conference on Monday, June 3rd with a keynote at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. WWDC 2019 will focus on software updates and improvements, so we don’t expect hardware to be the focus of the event. That said, Apple does love surprises.

The highlight of the event will undoubtedly be the unveiling of iOS 13, which is expected to feature a variety of notable changes, including the long-awaited addition of a system-wide Dark Mode. We got a sneak peek at the feature when 9to5Mac shared screenshots of the update last week. Those images also revealed a new UI for screenshots on iOS, a redesigned Reminders app, and the combination of the Find My iPhone and Find My Friends apps.
