Sketchy report says Apple will launch an iPhone with in-display Touch ID for China
The last time we heard that Apple was working on iPhone models with in-display fingerprint sensors, the iPhone X wasn’t even out. Many rumors said in early 2017 that the iPhone 8, which was what we once called the all-screen iPhone that Apple would launch in September, would feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, a technology that Apple had been developing for years. It turned out Apple had no intention to use Touch ID after perfecting a more sophisticated, more secure authentication method: Face ID.
In-display sensors also weren’t ready for mass consumption at the time. But two years later, the rumor is back — only this time it comes with an unexpected twist. China is reportedly going to get a unique smartphone design: An all-screen iPhone that ditches Face ID in favor of in-display Touch ID.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 smartphones are already selling better than the Galaxy S9
A little more than a month out from Samsung’s next Unpacked event, at which the company is expected to show off the new Galaxy Note 10 phablet, new numbers are in that tout the continued strength of the company’s Galaxy S smartphone series. Specifically, the Galaxy S10, which Samsung launched in March, is already selling better than the S9 during the former’s first three months of availability.
The data comes from Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing industry tracker Counterpoint Research, and shows that during the quarter that ended in May Samsung sold a combined 16 million units of the Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e. NASA is streaming today’s total solar eclipse, and you can watch it here
Being able to fully enjoy a total solar eclipse means being in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately for most skywatchers, today’s total solar eclipse will only grace a tiny section of Earth’s surface with its glorious eye candy. Not to worry, because NASA has us covered.
The eclipse will only be fully visible from a few locations in South America, including sections of Argentina and Chile. You’re not likely to see much of the eclipse at all unless you’re in South America, but NASA has partnered with the Exploratorium in California to broadcast live views of the spectacle straight from Chile.

Dedicated Galaxy S10 camera night mode starts to roll out in the US
Samsung has improved the dedicated Night mode on its camera app for the Galaxy S10 series of phones to the point where it competes with and possibly even surpasses that of Google’s Night Sight for the Pixel. Previously, the feature was only available in certain regions of the world, but as of this week, Night mode makes its way west, starting with a security patch that rolled out to AT&T Galaxy S10 models on Monday.
XDA-Developers was among the first to confirm that the AT&T Galaxy S10+ had received an update which features a dedicated night mode — one which international Galaxy S10 users have showcased in recent weeks. While the night mode wasn’t included at launch, Samsung added it via a software update, and then steadily improved it over time. It now stands as one of the best night modes available on any smartphone.

NASA initiates plan to rescue its robot that’s stuck on Mars
NASA’s newest Mars robot has a serious problem. The InSight lander is a relative newcomer to the Red Planet, having safely arrived at its chosen destination late last year, but one of its most important instruments — a self-hammering “mole” tool that is designed to dig up to 16 feet beneath the dusty surface — just can’t seem to get the job done.
The instrument failed miserably during its attempt to dig deep through the Martian soil, only making it about a foot deep before stalling out. Engineers suspect they know why, and they’ve just begun working towards what will hopefully be a permanent fix.
