Mozilla wants you to pay $5 a month for its own version of Apple News+

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Mozilla seems poised to jump into the paid news aggregation game soon, with the nonprofit behind the Firefox browser now teasing a $5-per-month subscription product that would offer ad-free news while also undercutting by a few dollars the recently launched Apple News+. The latter being a still relatively new subscription product from the iPhone maker which, if you believe the latest string of reports, hasn’t exactly gotten off to a rousing start, with publishers anonymously complaining about the service not delivering much in the way of revenue yet.

Trump administration admits that the threat of Huawei spying was enough for a ban

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It seems the Trump administration has finally explained the rationale for its actions against Huawei that culminated in a sweeping ban of US companies doing business with the Chinese consumer electronics giant. A ban that also led to a series of newsworthy consequences, including FedEx making headlines several times for its confusion over how to handle Huawei-related packages, Huawei acknowledging that its phone sales this year will be off by millions and Google moving to cut off Huawei from Android updates, forcing the Chinese company to ratchet up plans to make a mobile operating system of its own.

Wikipedia co-founder blasts Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Even though the vast majority of Facebook’s 2.38 billion users are seemingly impervious or apathetic to many of the company’s many controversies, the social networking giant remains a popular target for scorn from the tech elite. Most recently, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger blasted Facebook and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for a wide array of reasons. The gist of Sanger’s argument is nothing new, namely that the company abuses its power and that Facebook users are merely cogs in the corporate machine that is Facebook.

Xiaomi ‘mistakenly’ promoted its Memoji knock-off with a real Apple ad

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Xiaomi has been inadvertently generating a ton of press coverage for Apple in recent days, thanks to the Chinese brand’s new “Mimoji” avatars.

Reasons why that’s the case include: Xiaomi changed just one letter to differentiate its new Mimoji avatars from Apple’s Memoji feature. Tons of tech writers then dutifully wrote that Xiaomi was copying Apple yet again, part of a pattern at the company which even The New York Times once described in a headline as “an empire built by aping Apple.” Xiaomi took issue with the word “copy,” however, releasing a statement in China seeming to threaten writers over recent coverage of the new Mimoji.

Porsche Taycan and Volvo Polestar prototypes spotted in the wild

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Thanks to the ongoing popularity of the Model S, Tesla has handily dominated the EV luxury sedan market for years. Of course, the mainstream success enjoyed by the Model S quickly prompted more traditional automakers to shift their product roadmaps and throw more and more resources at EV development.

Looking ahead, Tesla is poised to face some of its stiffest competition yet as compelling new vehicles from the likes of Porsche and Volvo look to give the Model S a run for its money. Porsche, of course, is planning to roll out its highly-anticipated Taycan later this year. And Volvo, meanwhile, is planning to begin mass production on its all-electric Polestar 2 sometime in early 2020.

Huawei’s Android-based operating system might launch alongside the Mate 30 Pro

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’ve known for a long time that Huawei is working on its own operating systems that could be used on devices if it ever had to replace Android and Windows. That scenario unfolded a few weeks ago when the Trump administration placed China’s largest smartphone vendor on a blacklist that prevents it from importing any technology made in the States, whether it’s software or hardware.

Soon after that, we learned that Huawei would use Android for its mobile OS, only a version that’s stripped of everything Android fans love — that means there’s no Google Play and no other Google apps in Huawei’s Android. Then Huawei registered a “HongMeng” trademark in several countries, which is believed to be the name of its OS, and it looks like HongMeng is coming soon.

These $8 outdoor LED bulbs that turn on at night and off in the morning don’t even need Wi-Fi

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

I used to have LED smart bulbs set up in a few spots outside my house that would turn on each evening at sundown and then off again each morning at sunrise. It was a great, albeit pricey setup when it worked, but I found that some bulbs would lose connectivity from time to time and fail to turn on or off. Virgin Atlantic flight forced to land after passenger’s backup battery burst into flames

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There are few things in this world more panic-inducing than realizing your smartphone battery is about to die in the middle of a long flight. Being left with nothing but an in-flight movie to occupy yourself is a fate worse than just about anything, which is why backup batteries and external chargers have become common carry-on items for many travelers.

Unfortunately for passengers aboard a Virgin Atlantic flight from New York’s JFK airport to London’s Heathrow, one such battery pack blew its top and forced an emergency landing in Boston and a significant trip delay.

Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPad with 5G support and a massive screen

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

2019 was supposed to be the year of the foldable, but issues with Galaxy Fold review units and a mysterious delay of Huawei’s Mate X have left curious consumers in the lurch. Both of the phones will launch eventually, but it’s difficult to see foldable devices establishing any kind of foothold on the market this year.

That apparently hasn’t scared off Apple, though, as IHS Markit analyst Jeff Lin claims that the company is developing a foldable product of its own. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors about an Apple-made foldable, but the twist here is that Lin says Apple is building a foldable iPad, rather than an iPhone.
