Neil Armstrong’s Moon medal from the Apollo 11 mission just sold for an insane price
We’re now just days away from the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, as well as the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong becoming the first human to walk on the lunar surface. With remarkable timing, a number of auctions have popped up over the past month featuring some seriously sought-after NASA relics from sellers hoping to cash in on the hype.
A recent listing by Heritage Auctions included an undeniably cool collector’s item in the form of Neil Armstrong’s personal Apollo 11 gold medal that traveled with the crew to the Moon and then back to Earth. You’d expect such an item to sell for a high price, but when the auction ended, the total was almost unfathomable: $2,055,000.

Netflix plans to launch a cheaper, mobile-only plan in a major market
Though there were a few bright spots in Netflix’s earnings report today, investors didn’t react too kindly to the company’s big miss on adding new subscribers. With Netflix anticipating 5 million new subscribers for the quarter, the streaming giant only managed to add about 2.7 million new subscribers. As a point of contrast, Netflix during the same quarter a year ago managed to add nearly 5.5 million new subscribers.
Netflix, though, does have a few plans designed to boost overall subscriber numbers. Aside from its tried-and-true strategy of rolling out an endless amount of fresh content, the company’s letter to investor disclosed a plan to roll out a more affordable and mobile-only streaming plan for users in India. So whereas the base plan for Netflix plans allows users to consume content via HDTVs, computers, and mobile devices, the new discounted plan will only work on smartphones.

We’re now exactly one year away from NASA’s Mars 2020 launch
This month is a very special one for the folks at NASA. The space agency is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, sure, but that’s not the only reason. You see, today, July 17th, 2019, is exactly one year away from the launch of the Mars 2020 mission, and things are rapidly beginning to take shape.
The mission will see the most advanced Mars rover ever built travel to the Red Planet and touch down in a location known as the Jezero Crater. There, the robot will depart the Mars 2020 lander and explore the Martian terrain, offering new clues about the planet’s history and perhaps even revealing whether or not Mars ever hosted life.

Despite massive earnings, Netflix is struggling to attract new subscribers
Netflix released its earnings report for the June quarter and posted EPS of $0.60, a solid beat over initial estimates of $0.56. Revenue came in exactly where analysts expected, with the streaming giant generating $4.92 billion in revenue for the quarter gone by.
That notwithstanding, the chief metric analysts tend to judge Netflix on has always centered on the company’s ability to attract new subscribers. And from that vantage point, Netflix’s earnings for the quarter left quite a few investors disappointed.

Apple may bring an exciting new feature to the 2020 iPhone’s rear camera
If the myriad rumors and reports are to be believed, the next major iPhone evolution won’t take place until 2020. This year’s iPhone will certainly be a step up, but far more dramatic changes are coming next year. One of those changes will apparently be a time-of-flight 3D rear camera, according to a new DigiTimes report.
Sources tell the site that Apple is working with supply chain partners to bring vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VSCEL) components to future iPhone models. This is the same technology that powers Apple’s TrueDepth camera system, which is already present in the front-facing cameras of current iPhones. Including the technology in the rear cameras as well could open up a whole new world of possibilities for augmented reality.

The all-screen smartphone design of our dreams is coming next year – but not to the Galaxy S11
The Galaxy S8 may have launched several months before the iPhone X hit stores back in 2017, but it’s Apple’s phone that every company copied in the year that followed. Samsung was slow to improve the Galaxy S series’ all-screen design. The Galaxy S9 didn’t get a notch of its own and it didn’t get any significant design improvements either, a decision that hurt Samsung’s bottom line last year. The Galaxy S10, meanwhile, delivered a breath of fresh air as Samsung unveiled a daring hole-punch display design to take on notch displays and slide-out cameras.
A version of that Infinity-O display will be used for the Galaxy Note 10 that’s set to launch in a few weeks, but Samsung doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to embrace what could be the next massive breakthrough when it comes to smartphone display innovations.
