A massive $70 million Netflix deal may finally lure Eddie Murphy back to stand-up comedy

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For years, veteran comics like Neal Brennan and Chris Rock have lamented the fact that Eddie Murphy has been on a prolonged hiatus from the stand-up game. Though Murphy never addressed his absence from stand-up directly, there have long been rumblings that he was hesitant to return to the stage out of a fear that the expectations surrounding his return would be far too great to live up to.

Tens of millions of dollars, however, can do a lot to change a man’s mind apparently. According to a new report from TMZ, Netflix is close to securing a wildly expensive stand-up deal with Murphy that will see the famed actor earn as much as $70 million for what may be a string of stand-up specials.

Wildfires are raging in the Arctic after an unprecedented heatwave

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Arctic is a chilly place, or at least it’s supposed to be, but a recent combination of record-breaking heat and intense wildfires have turned areas of Greenland, Siberia, and Alaska into smoke-covered infernos. Scientists have been keeping a close eye on how things are developing, and as Earther reports, we’ve got some really stunning satellite images of the blazes from above.

The size and number of wildfires is a bit frightening on its own, but their potential environmental impact is even scarier. The flames are belching huge volumes of pollutants, and high winds can carry debris aloft for considerable distances, affecting air quality on a global scale.

Southwest is giving away a Nintendo Switch to one lucky passenger every day for a month

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Southwest Airlines kicked off its new Lets Play Getaway sweepstakes in a pretty dramatic fashion.

The deal is, every day through Aug. 13 the Dallas-based air carrier will be giving away a Nintendo Switch as well as a digital copy of Super Mario Maker 2. That’s certainly a sweet enough promotion, but if you happened to be a passenger on Southwest flight 2246 Wednesday from Dallas to San Diego, you actually already scored both of those freebies.

Huawei apparently still has no viable Android alternative

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For months now, Huawei has been giving off some pretty, shall we say, mixed signals about what it might do should its standoff with the US become permanent and the company remains cut off from doing business with key vendors like Google. Which means, among other things, that it would need a permanent replacement for Android going forward for its handsets.

At first, the Chinese consumer electronics giant tried to downplay the US ban, promising that it would press full steam ahead (never mind that something like half of its sales comes from outside China). Since then, we’ve also gotten teases about its ambition for an Android-related Plan B, with reports suggesting that Huawei’s HongMeng OS could even be 60% faster than Google’s mobile OS.

The atrocious ‘Game of Thrones’ finale is the officially lowest-rated show ever to get an Emmy nod for writing

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Let’s be clear about one thing right from the top here. HBO’s Game of Thrones deserves tons of praise for the impressive pile of Emmy nominations it just picked up a few days ago — 32, to be exact, the most ever accumulated for a show during a single season.

But for many fans, one of the Emmy nods buried in that pile is… let’s just say it’s a bridge too far. We’re talking of course about the nomination garnered by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for writing the Season 8 finale. Which seems like one of the most improbable nominations ever bestowed and hard to wrap your head around for multiple reasons.

Apple’s iPhone 12 will pack a processor unlike anything else in the industry

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Each new iPhone generation brings us a brand new Apple processor that is faster than ever, and much better than what the competition has to offer. The A12 chips that power the iPhone XS and 2018 iPad Pros are so fast that they can outperform most computers in benchmark tests. And that performance inspired many comparisons between the iPhone and MacBooks, further fueling speculation that Apple might soon launch MacBooks powered by its own ARM chips.

The iPhone 11 phones that will be released in September will deliver another bump in speed and energy efficiency, and the same goes for the 2019 iPad Pros that will use a souped-up version of that A13 chip. But a new report says it’s next year’s iPhone series that will pack a revolutionary processor unlike anything else in the industry.
