Hubble captured gorgeous snapshot of a massive distant galaxy
Thanks to the nature of light and the fact that it can only move so fast, peering at objects far away means that astronomers can effectively look back in time. Well, “can” is a bit of an understatement since they’re quite literally forced to see things as they were, based on how far away the subject they’re observing is.
In the case of the Hubble Space Telescope’s observations of the distant spiral galaxy NGC 2985, that means seeing the galaxy as it was over 70 million years ago. In a new blog post, NASA highlights a particularly stunning image of the far-away galaxy, and it sure is pretty.

Popular true wireless earbuds that fix one thing we hate about AirPods are down to $27

That means a lot of the sound and almost all of the bass just leaks out, and we hate it. If you want a pair of true wireless earbuds that fix this issue with silicone tips and are much less expensive to boot, pick up a pair of SoundPEATS TrueFree True Wireless Earbuds — there’s even a 10% coupon on Amazon that slashes the price to just $26.99!

A foldable smartphone that’s better in every way than the Galaxy Fold just leaked
For more than a year before Samsung even announced the Galaxy Fold, I was warning people that it would end up being a mess. No, I didn’t have any inside track into Samsung’s secret design labs. I’ve just been doing this for a really long time. Samsung’s mobile division is so good at so many things, but innovating with first-generation smartphones is nowhere to be found on that list. The company is all about evolution, not revolution, and its first-gen devices are always a disaster. We’ve been over this — when Samsung introduces a new class of device, it pretty much ends up being the physical embodiment of a “first!” YouTube comment. Down the road a bit once Samsung has refined its design over the course of a few iterations, Samsung’s mobile devices are incredible.
Long story short, stay far away from the Galaxy Fold once it’s released. Samsung announced earlier this week that the Galaxy Fold will finally launch sometime in September, and we’ve seen all the different things that Samsung did to improve the foldable smartphone’s design. It’s still a total mess. Keep your wallets in your pockets and save yourself $2,000. The design is terrible, even if Samsung really has fixed all of the obvious design problems the Fold never should have had to begin with. If you want a foldable Samsung smartphone, wait until the third- or fourth-generation model. It’s going to be fantastic — I promise. But if you want a folding smartphone in 2019, there’s only one model that’s going to be at least decent and its final design was just revealed for the first time in leaked photos.

With the Pixel 4 nearing release, Google just confirmed it can’t sell expensive phones
We’ve seen it over and over with the Pixel series: Google can’t sell the flagship, at least not at that price. The original Pixel suffered from severe stock shortages. The Pixel 2 didn’t, but it still didn’t do as well in stores as expected. A year later, the Pixel 3 dropped a flagship phone that Google and its partners frequently discount. When the Pixel 4 launches this fall, it’s likely the handset will have a higher price tag that will keep it in line with the iPhone 11, Galaxy Note 10, and other 2019 flagships. No matter how exciting the Pixel 4 might be, Google just confirmed again to the world that it’s not successful at selling expensive smartphones as its main rivals.

Galaxy Note 10 reservation lets you save up to $600 on the pricey new flagship
The Galaxy Note 10 launch is less than two weeks away, with Samsung expected to kick off preorders soon after the press conference is over. The phone is rumored to launch on August 23rd, giving buyers some two weeks time to get the handset. As expected, early buyers will get several perks which will make that sky-high price easier to swallow, and Samsung just revealed one of them. You get to save anywhere between $200 to $600 on the Galaxy Note 10, which will likely start at $999 if you trade-in your old phone.

Cameras capture meteor streaking across the night sky on the East Coast
The big “planet killer” asteroids of science fiction may be avoiding Earth for the time being, but there are plenty of smaller chunks of space rock that get swallowed up by Earth all the time. When those objects are incinerated in the night sky they can produce quite a light show, and that appears to be exactly what happened on the East Coast of the U.S. on Wednesday night.
Hundreds of reports from eyewitnesses across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and several other states flooded into the American Meteor Society’s report system, and a few of them even had video to support the sighting.

Tesla suffers a huge blow as CTO JB Straubel decides to step down
One of the more interesting tidbits to come out of Tesla’s earnings conference call yesterday was the announcement that Tesla CTO and company co-founder JB Straubel is leaving the company. Straubel will remain involved with Tesla in an advisory committee, which is essentially a corporate-esque way of saying that he’s gone.
“I want to thank JB for his fundamental role in creating and building Tesla,” Musk said at one point during the conference call. “If we hadn’t had lunch in 2003, Tesla wouldn’t exist.”
