Google’s newest Chrome update makes it easier to avoid paywalls

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google explained a few days ago that it plans to fix a security issue in Chrome that allows websites to tell whether you’re browsing in incognito mode. One of the side effects of this fix is that users will be able to avoid paywalls easier than before, something that Google addressed in its initial announcement.

Scientists in Japan get clearance for growing human-animal hybrids

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Genetic modification can be a touchy subject in scientific circles, especially when the life form being modified is an animal. Researchers fear that the consequences of rogue scientists “playing God” will lead us down a scary path, and they may be right, but the Japanese government just took a careful step forward by approving the creation of human-rodent hybrids.

Geneticist Hiromitsu Nakauchi and his team plan to use human cells to grow organs in mouse and rat embryos, eventually allowing the embryos to be carried to term and birthed as the first documented human-animal hybrids.

Netflix once tried to steer people away from saying ‘binge-watching’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At this point, there’s a lot about the Netflix experience that seems so deeply ingrained in the way we collectively experience the streaming giant that it’s hard to imagine the way things used to be before — or how we spent our leisure time before we had so much content at our fingertips, so easily within reach. And it’s certainly hard to imagine anyone pining again for the days when the inventory at those antiquated bricks-and-mortar retail stores determined what we could watch and when.

As Netflix’s original series Orange Is the New Black draws to a close, with the final season having landed on the streamer this past Friday, this is also as good a time as any to look back at another of the experiences Netflix popularized: The practice of binge-watching. Specifically, where that phrase came from.

Xbox Games with Gold for August adds ‘Forza 6’ and ‘Gears of War 4’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It appears that Microsoft heard me whining about the recent output of free games on both Xbox One and PS4, as the August selection for Games with Gold is the best I’ve seen in ages. As this console generation begins to wind down, Microsoft has made two of its best exclusive titles free for the month of August. The first — Gears of War 4 — is my favorite game in the series, and the second — Forza 6 — is an incredible racing game.

Those two titles honestly would have been plenty, but the classic dungeon crawler Torchlight is being given away too, as is the underrated Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which hit the Xbox 360 way back in 2010.

Apple once again proves Tim Cook’s plan to deal with slowing iPhone sales is paying off

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In a rundown Tuesday afternoon of his company’s performance over the most recent fiscal third quarter, Apple CEO Tim Cook accentuated the positives despite the ho-hum nature of the three-month period. The quarter just before summer begins, for example, doesn’t include the busy holiday shopping season or a back-to-school rush for devices. Nevertheless, this is a publicly-traded company, presenting its results to Wall Street on a three-month cycle, and as such analysts and investors expect to see as many improvements as possible each time new earnings are presented.

But how do you satisfy the Street’s expectation that public companies always show growth when, in Apple’s case, the company’s signature product has matured — to the point that Apple has made clear the iPhone will no longer generate the sizzling, white-hot sales numbers it once did? Apple’s latest earnings tell the story.

There’s no smartwatch as popular as the Apple Watch, and Apple keeps selling millions of units every quarter. Apple’s smartwatch is quite easy to tell apart from its main competitors, as its design is instantly recognizable. But come next week, Samsung will launch a Galaxy Watch 2 that looks very familiar.

JetBlue’s newest fare sale offers tickets as low as $39, but you need to act fast

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you’re planning to travel or go on vacation this fall, it pays (literally) to start thinking about the logistics of your trip early. Flash fare sales are one way to potentially save a ton of money, and JetBlue may actually have you covered on that front. The boutique New York-based airline has just launched a two-day series of discounts — its “Fetch a Deal” sale — that includes some low prices that are almost too good to be true, with some as low as $39.

But the catch here is you’ve seriously got to act fast. Unsurprisingly, such tickets are going to get snatched up pretty quickly before this fare sale ends at 11:59 ET on July 31.

Apollo 11 installed an experiment on the Moon that is still working today

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s Apollo 11 mission broke new ground in a lot of obvious ways. Landing humans on the lunar surface was a huge accomplishment, as was the first (and each subsequent) moonwalk. But not everything about Apollo 11 is mere nostalgia for NASA, and as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains in a new post, one experiment installed on the Moon is actually still returning useful data today.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin didn’t just walk on the Moon, they conducted a whole heap of science while there. One of the experiments required the installation of a glass prism array on the surface. Later, Apollo 14 and 15 added even more prisms, and scientists have been using them to measure the distance between the Moon and Earth ever since.

Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ will officially debut on September 27th

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

I’ve been waiting to see The Irishman for quite a while, ever since I heard that Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese were attached to the project. The film was acquired by Netflix a couple of years ago, and is based on Charles Brandt’s book, I Heard You Paint Houses, that tells the supposedly real story of Jimmy Hoffa’s death. The biographical film has an impressive cast, a massive budget for a Netflix film, and now — finally — a release date.

Researchers worry that hackers could turn connected cars into roadblocks

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As carmakers continue to pack their newest models with all manner of “smart” technology, researchers are concerned that connected vehicles will become an increasingly irresistible target for hackers. A new study by scientists with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Multiscale Systems, Inc., suggests that if hackers find serious vulnerabilities in internet-connected cars they could easily halt traffic in entire cities with the push of a button.

The study uses the science of physics to predict how traffic patterns are affected by vehicles that stop in the middle of the road. By factoring in various types of roads, the number of lanes, traffic density, the team simulated how even a relatively small number of “frozen” connected cars could bring entire cities to a total halt.
