New study paints a dire picture for football players, even when concussions are avoided
The NFL and college football have come under fire in recent years due to the mounting scientific evidence that shows the damage that can be caused by simply playing the game. Everyone knows that concussions are bad, but repeated impacts to the head that aren’t severe enough to cause a concussion can be serious as well, and a new study shows that even a single season can significantly alter brain matter.
The study, which was published in Science Advances, was conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester who tracked the brain health of nearly 40 of the school’s football players. Equipped with special helmets to monitor impacts, the data shows dramatic changes in the brain even when players can avoid serious concussions.

Google is getting better at making sure you book the cheapest possible flight
For the past few years, I have been almost exclusively using Google’s online travel tools to book flights. It’s often the most convenient way to sort through dozens of flight options at once, and the interface is decidedly more manageable than what most competitors have to offer. That said, it does lack some features that other sites provide, but this week, the platform came one step closer to being the ultimate online travel companion.
Google has been updating its travel tools rather frequently in recent years, highlighted by the launch of a travel portal in May which unified all of the features and menus into a single webpage. But that was just the beginning, as the new features arriving this week seem built to convince users never to book travel anywhere else.

3.5 Galaxy Note 10 features I’m jealous of, as an iPhone user
The Galaxy Note 10 series is finally official, and all the leaks that preceded Samsung’s press conference turned out to be true. Samsung launched two worthy successors of the Note 9 (but also the Galaxy S10) that pack quite a few exciting new features. In many ways, however, the Note 10 is a lot like other high-end Android phones, especially when it comes to the overall design, the main specs, and the cameras. But as an iPhone user who is unlikely to leave the iOS-macOS ecosystem anytime soon, I’m absolutely jealous of 3.5 Note 10 features that I can’t have on the iPhone for the time being. That’s three-and-a-half, not a jab at the fact that Samsung ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack on the Note 10 after slamming Apple for doing the same thing years ago. Okay, fine, it’s both.

NASA’s Curiosity rover stumbled upon a Martian rock that tells an incredible story
We tend to think of rocks as being, well, pretty boring. We find them pretty much everywhere here on Earth, and while some are neat to look at we don’t often spend the time to consider the stories they can tell. For the scientists working with NASA’s Curiosity rover, however, rocks are like windows into the past of a planet we still know relatively little about.
The Curiosity rover is currently exploring an area within the Gale Crater called the “clay-bearing unit.” NASA highlighted a panorama snapped from this location as the agency celebrated the robot’s 7th year on the Red Planet, but one rock in particular is worthy of additional attention. It’s been nicknamed “Strathdon” and it’s telling researchers a lot about what Mars was like when it was a whole lot wetter.

iOS 13 public beta 5 now available to download on your iPhone
Right on cue, the fifth iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 public betas are now rolling out for all iPhone and iPad users to test. We are getting pretty deep in the beta cycle at this point, which means the major changes are few and far between, but there are still some significant additions worth checking out in the latest beta release.
For those of you who love the new Dark Mode option, Apple has made it even easier to access as you can now find a toggle in Control Center. You can also turn Dark Mode on through Siri. Apple has also reverted several of the changes that were made in previous betas, and you will see a few splash screens on familiar apps walking you through any of the updates that have affected them in iOS 13 or iPadOS 13.
