Destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant is out of space to store radioactive water
Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant suffered a devastating meltdown back in 2011, and while news about the disaster has died down significantly since then, the actual cleanup and containment efforts have been ongoing ever since.
Now, with contaminated water from the plant continuing to pile up, the company handling its storage says it’s just a few years from running out of space to hold it. The tainted water, which is a mix of water from the reactor, groundwater, and rain that gets mixed in with it all, is being stored in tanks, but space is rapidly running out.

Here are the free NES games added to Nintendo Switch Online in August 2019
Nintendo announced its latest slate of free NES games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers this week, and it may very well be the most compelling argument to date for a new console or two to be added to the program. This month’s new titles are Kung-Fu Heroes and Vice: Project Doom, and if you’ve heard of either of those games before this very moment, then you are officially a bigger NES fan than I can claim to be.
For a relatively inexpensive subscription service, a collection of 40+ free games is nothing to scoff at, but Nintendo is clearly scraping the bottom of the NES barrel at this point. Sadly, there’s still no sign that SNES or N64 games will be added to Nintendo Switch Online any time soon, but we’ll keep holding out hope.

There’s a new Face ID hack, but you have nothing to worry about
Researchers at the Black Hat security conference this week highlighted an interesting, and somewhat impractical, way to fool Apple’s Face ID. Originally introduced with the iPhone X, Face ID does an impressive job of only allowing authorized users to access a particular device. All the same, Face ID isn’t entirely fool-proof.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a few demonstrations which illustrate how Face ID can sometimes be fooled by twins or even siblings who bear a close resemblance. There have even been stories of researchers using 3D-printed plaster masks to fool the software.

MoviePass changed passwords to lock out users once it ran out of sane ideas
Back in the summer of 2018, the beleaguered movie ticket app MoviePass was attracting a firestorm of complaints from users who were unable to use the app (for which they were paying $10 a month to see one film per day) to buy tickets for some new blockbusters, like Mission: Impossible — Fallout. “As we continue to evolve the service,” CEO Mitch Lowe said at the time, in a statement released to tamp down some of the complaints, “certain movies may not always be available in every theater on our platform. This is no different than other in-home streaming options that often don’t carry the latest shows or movies that may be available on other services.”
What MoviePass was also doing behind the scenes, though, and which was different from pretty much every other company not drowning in a dumpster fire of poor decisions, is something that’s only just now come to light.

Amazon Echo devices are assembled by teenagers forced to work overtime hours
In a scathing report that shouldn’t shock anyone, a new expose from China Labor Watch reveals that a Foxconn-owned factory has been employing upwards of 1,500 teenagers (aged 16-18) as interns. Their task? Making speakers for Amazon.
While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with a teenager working an internship in and of itself, the report details how the teens routinely work 10-hour days and are often encouraged to work overtime. It’s worth noting that young interns in China, by law, are not allowed to work at night or overtime hours. Incidentally, the interns in question here are sent by nearby schools and technical colleges.
