Dead planets beam ‘zombie’ radio signals into space for up to a billion years, scientists say

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of August 11)

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Another week, another returning Netflix original series. Mindhunter is back for its second season of grisly murders and the conversations that follow, and while the first season had its ups and downs, but ended strong and left viewers with a nail-biting cliffhanger that should have everyone champing at the bit for new episodes.

Other highlights include the sixth season of The 100, a Cannon Busters anime, and a new Invader Zim movie called Enter the Florpus, which revives one of the true cult classics of the early 2000s. Sadly, we’re also losing No Country for Old Men this week as well, so be sure to find a time to watch it before it’s gone.

Child-sized parrots once roamed New Zealand

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Parrots are popular pets today, and you don’t have to look far on YouTube to find charming videos of tropical birds doing adorable things. They’re fun animals, and their small size makes them appealing to potential owners. Fossils from New Zealand reveal the existence of an ancient parrot that would definitely not have been a good fit for an apartment-dweller… or anyone, for that matter.

The bird, which has been nicknamed “Squakzilla,” was absolutely massive by today’s standards. The creature weighed in at around 15 pounds, which might not sound all that big, but it stood about as tall as a 4-year-old child. Yeah, that’s a big bird.

Something slammed into Jupiter, and all we saw was a flash

It was only about a day ago that NASA showed off some Hubble’s finest work yet in the form of new images of Jupiter. The photos (and a brief animation made of many of said images) are stunning, but while we were all gawking at the gorgeous eye candy this week, something appears to have slammed right into the side of the gas giant.

As ScienceAlert reports, one very talented space photographer managed to capture images of what appears to be an incredibly bright flash in the upper atmosphere of the planet. The cause of the flash hasn’t been conclusively proven, but it seems to have been a meteor impact.

5 new movie trailers to watch from this past week: The Addams Family, Honey Boy, and more

We’ve got Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark out this weekend, right alongside The Kitchen. One is a horror story, the other is a mobster drama, but last week’s box office winner, Hobbs & Shaw, will probably dominate the charts for one more weekend. When it comes to new trailers, the movie gods haven’t been that generous with fans this week. But, hey, we’re in the middle of summer, so a draught is to be expected.

The top 15 most-watched shows in July across Netflix, HBO, and other platforms

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

I’ve seen a fair amount of online chatter and news coverage in recent days using the imminent arrival of Disney+ and other similar new streaming options to question what all this means for Netflix — indeed, whether Netflix has now become the over-large, Blockbuster-like incumbent it once fought to replace.

Almost everywhere you look, rivals are increasingly trying to bottle some of the Netflix magic for themselves. Heck, Disney+ is about to launch a mega-bundle that costs the same as a Standard Netflix plan (but includes Hulu, Disney+ as well as ESPN+), which certainly sounds like a heck of an offering. Netflix, meanwhile, is pressing forward and still following its own playbook — with the recent announcement that it’s bought the Game of Thrones’ showrunners in a $200 million deal serving as yet another reminder that it remains the force in streaming to beat.
