The 3 things people hate most about Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 10

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s big Galaxy Note 10 reveal is now behind us and we have just over one week of waiting left to do before the new Note 10 series flagship phones hit store shelves. We haven’t spent enough time with it yet so we can’t offer up our own impressions of the new phones, but it seems fairly apparent that the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ are the sleekest and most powerful smartphones that Samsung has built so far. The overhauled design is gorgeous, featuring an all-screen display with a small hole-punch camera at the top. Then, around back you have new triple-lens and quad-lens cameras, depending on which model you choose. The display is already said to be the best smartphone display ever by experts, and the Note 10’s new cameras have been ranked at the very top of the pack by DxOMark. Long story short, the Galaxy Note 10 is a beast of a smartphone that covers just about every base there is to cover. Just about.

It goes without saying that nothing is perfect, and that applies to Samsung’s new flagship phablets as much as it does anything else. There’s no question that the new Note 10 and Note 10+ look fantastic, there’s no question that the cameras are a huge upgrade, and there’s no question that they pack plenty of power. Samsung did a tremendous job on its new Note series phones, and it’s a good thing since last year’s Galaxy Note 9 was such a horribly boring update. Of course, there are a few issues with the Galaxy Note 10 that people are already complaining about, including three problems in particular that have really ruffled some feathers.

You won’t believe how fast the Galaxy Note 10 charges

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s 2019 flagships finally offer faster battery charging speeds than ever, with the Galaxy S10 5G reaching 25W speeds, and all the Galaxy Note 10 phones shipping with 25W chargers. The Note 10+ handsets, meanwhile, support 45W chargers, but you have to purchase them separately. However, it turns out that you don’t necessarily need that 45W brick, as the 25W default charger is able to outperform OnePlus’s 30W charger.

Google might owe you $500 if you had a first-gen Pixel phone

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Remember that class action suit that Google settled over defective first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL phones? Well, it’s time to collect your dues, as Google owes you up to $500 for those faulty microphones that shipped inside early Pixel units. Getting that cash, however, might be more difficult.

Scientists tasked a supercomputer with building millions of simulated universes

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Figuring out how our reality took shape over billions of years is no easy task for scientists. Theories about how the Big Bang played out and the immediate aftermath are a dime a dozen, but researchers led by a team from the University of Arizona think they might stumble upon some of the secrets of galaxy formation by asking a supercomputer to simulate millions of virtual universes and seeing which ones come closest to what we see today.

In a new research paper published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the team explains how they used a supercomputer system nicknamed the “Universe Machine” to watch billions of (virtual) years of galaxy formation play out before their eyes.

Huawei’s long-awaited mobile OS elicits mixed reactions in China

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

“Talk is cheap. Show me the code.”

That quip, one of the well-known aphorisms attributable to Linux creator Linus Torvalds, was posted in recent days by a user of the popular Chinese question-and-answer website Zhihu in response to the unveiling of Huawei’s homegrown mobile operating system Hongmeng (or HarmonyOS, as it will be known outside the country). That user seemed to be specifically referring to Huawei’s assurance at its developer conference from over the weekend that the new OS would be open-source, though details about when the code for it will be made public are still forthcoming.

Watch a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot crash into a parked truck and burst into flames

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A Tesla Model 3 burst into flames over the weekend after crashing into a tow truck parked on a highway shoulder. The incident occurred in Moscow and the driver — named Alexei Tretyakov — noted that the car was on Autopilot at the time of the crash. Incidentally, Tretyakov made a point of noting that his hands were on the steering wheel at the time, per Tesla’s guidelines.

As to the specifics of the crash, Tretyakov said he was driving at about 60 miles per hour when he abruptly collided with a tow truck that had escaped his line of sight for some reason. Shortly thereafter, the Tesla caught fire with the flames ultimately destroying the car entirely. Incidentally, there were also two explosions that rattled the car following the accident.

Being overweight is even more of a cancer risk than previously thought

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The risks of being obese are fairly well documented, and while it’s true that a person who is significantly overweight can better their odds of living longer with exercise, avoiding tobacco, and other healthy lifestyle choices, losing weight is oftentimes the best thing an obese person can do.

When it comes to cancer, it seems that notion is even more accurate than previous thought, and new research published in the International Journal of Epidemiology suggests that obesity is far worse for a person’s cancer risk than anyone guessed.

Whenever Samsung rolls out new models of its flagship handsets, you can be forgiven for feeling like the company is positioning them as top-notch cameras that also happen to include smartphone functionality. That was certainly the case during last week’s Unpacked event in New York, when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 10+ and spent a lot of time and attention touting the image and video quality experience, in addition to the state-of-the-art tools built into the series’ pro-grade cameras.

Astronomers just found a black hole so huge it makes our galaxy’s black hole look like a baby

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At the heart of our home galaxy is a supermassive black hole that gobbles up anything that gets too close. It’s huge, with a mass of 4 million times that of our Sun, but size is a relative thing when we’re talking about the universe, and astronomers just spotted a black hole in a distant galaxy that puts ours to shame.

The galaxy, Holm 15A, sits around 700 million light-years away, making it somewhat difficult to study in detail, but what scientists know for sure is that the black hole in its heart is the largest ever discovered. In fact, researchers believe the black hole in Holm 15A is at least 10,000 times as massive as our home galaxy’s black hole.
