Google has a brand new security feature that every Android user out there should be using, as long as they operate devices with built-in fingerprint sensors running at least Android 7. But what’s exciting is that the feature will really shine once the Pixel 4 launches, as Google’s device is already confirmed to feature 3D facial recognition authentication, similar to Apple’s Face ID for the iPhone X-branded phones.

NASA’s space-worthy nuclear reactor could be ready to fly by 2022

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Today, scientists dream of one day building settlements on the Moon and even Mars, where research can be conducted and human travelers can live safely for months or years. Making that dream a reality is going to take a lot of work, and one of the most pressing concerns is power.

The Department of Energy and NASA think that nuclear power may be the way to go, and a prototype fission reactor has already shown promise in tests here on Earth. Now, as Space.com reports, the DOE believes that it could have a flight-worthy version of the reactor ready to go as soon as 2022, which is far sooner than NASA will be ready to send humans to the Moon, let alone Mars.

Security researcher demos a modified iPhone charging cable that can hijack your computer

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As far as iPhone and Mac hacks are concerned, a California-based security researcher who goes by the name MG recently came up with one of the more clever and intriguing workarounds we’ve seen to date. Whereas most exploits that make the news tend to rely on unsuspecting users clicking on a malicious link or website, MG developed a way to hijack a user’s computer via the lightning cable used to charge iOS devices.

Originally brought to light via Motherboard, MG’s hack is seemingly simple and can be explored in-depth on his blog here. Put simply, he delicately tears open a standard lightning cable, modifies it with custom components, and puts it back together. By all accounts, the modified lightning cable looks and performs exactly like one you’d pick up from an Apple retail store.

Facebook ends human review of user audio after other companies do the same

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Facebook is now the latest tech giant to put a stop to human review of user audio recordings, following a slew of companies from Google to Amazon and Apple all likewise coming under fire in recent weeks over the human review of audio collected from users.

In Facebook’s case, the company acknowledged Tuesday that it paused the practice earlier this month after those other companies started to attract scrutiny over basically the same thing. That’s according to Bloomberg, which reports that Facebook had been paying third-party contractors to transcribe audio from users who’d allowed their chats to be transcribed.

ESA’s Mars mission hits snag after second parachute test failure

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Sending a spacecraft to Mars is no easy feat, but landing it on the Red Planet without making a crater is equally challenging. The European Space Agency knows that all too well, and a recent parachute test has raised serious questions about whether the ExoMars 2020 mission will remain on schedule.

A previous test in late May showed promise but was ultimately deemed a failure due to damage sustained by the two large parachutes that will be doing the majority of the work. This latest test included an updated design of the parachute arrangement but the problem reared its head once again.

PlayStation 5 rumored to be officially revealed in February 2020

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Both Microsoft and Sony have revealed that development on their next home consoles is well underway, but neither has made an actual announcement confirming the name, price, or release date of their console yet. That may change early next year, as an extensive leak from 4chan (via NeoGAF) may have spoiled Sony’s plans for its next big events, one of which will feature the official reveal of the PlayStation 5 (or whatever it’s called).

According to the anonymous source, Sony will host an event dubbed PlayStation Meeting 2020 on February 12th next year, where the PlayStation 5 will make its debut. This information apparently comes from an email sent by the senior marketing manager at PlayStation. The email also reportedly says third-party publishers like Activision, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and EA will be invited as well to show off their next-gen titles for the unreleased PS5.
