Apple is now testing its Apple Arcade gaming service internally ahead of the iPhone 11 launch
Apple announced its gaming-focused subscription service Apple Arcade back in March, revealing some of the details about the kind of gaming experience it wants to offer its customers. At the time, however, Apple hasn’t told the audience how much the service will cost and when it’ll launch. But with a few weeks to go until Apple’s mid-September iPhone 11 event, Apple Arcade is already in testing with Apple employees.

Hubble spots a big, weird blob of star gas
When you gaze at the sky on a clear night, you can easily spot countless stars shining bright. Most of them look pretty much identical, aside from varying brightness, but when NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope zooms in on a distant object, it can see it for what it truly is.
In the case of NGC 2022, located in the constellation Orion, Hubble’s imaging tools reveal it to be a big blob of gas surrounding an aging star. It looks absolutely bizarre, but it’s actually the predictable result of a star approaching the later stages of its life.

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of August 18)
It was only a matter of time before the deluge of well-known Netflix content began to dry up, and to that point, this week’s slate is not quite as exciting as it has been in recent weeks. That said, there are some potential gems in here, including a comedy special from the intriguing Simon Amstell, who hosted the genuinely hysterical British game show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, which you should try to find online if you can.
Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York is arriving this week as well, along with the second part of the Netflix original anime Hero Mask. Sadly, the underrated Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is departing the service this week, and if you haven’t seen, set aside an hour and a half and give it a spin this weekend.

Netflix’s cancellation bloodbath is a lie
We’ve still got a little more than four months left in 2019, and already Netflix has pulled the plug on two dozen shows this year — everything from The OA to Tuca & Bertie, the latter of which only got one season and both of which have been the subject of an online effort to save them.
Here’s the thing, though, according to new data from Bloomberg: Netflix’s decisions like these seem to attract outsized attention, partly because of the streamer’s high-profile space in the entertainment landscape. When, in fact, the reality is that Netflix — with a 2019 content budget in excess of $14 billion — is actually very comparable to competitors when it comes to the rate at which it cancels shows.

Elon Musk is once again on a quest to ‘nuke Mars’
If there’s one thing you can say about Elon Musk it’s that he’s never lacked ambition. He’s founded a number of successful companies, and with SpaceX he’s pushed science forward by lowering the cost of entry for satellite launches and opened up new possibilities for researchers.
He’s also seemingly made it his life’s mission to make a human colony on Mars a reality, and he insists that it’s possible to make Mars a lot like Earth as long as we can unlock the carbon dioxide trapped inside Martian ice, rock, and soil. Scientists aren’t fully on board with this line of thinking, but a new tweet from Musk hints that he’s once again ready to argue that “nuking Mars” is a good idea.

7 new trailers you need to watch from this week: Little Women, Dolemite Is My Name, and more
There’s no big blockbuster movie coming out this weekend, which means you’ll have time to catch up on some of the previous releases of the summer, with Hobbs and Shaw and The Lion Ling still dominating the box office. Opening this week, however, is a comedy that seems to press all the right buttons: Good Boys.
Also out this week are sequels for the Angry Birds Movie and 47 Meters Down franchises. One features a bunch of animated, angry birds, and the other stars a group of animated, angry sharks.

Your reaction to my hellish SSD upgrade proves that Windows 10 has a serious storage upgrade problem
Earlier this week, I told you how installing an SSD in an old Windows 10 laptop has been the best and worst upgrade I’ve ever done. It was the best because the SSD gave that older machine a second life, and everything is now a lot faster than before, from boot times to app launches.
At the same time, it turned out to be a huge chore, because I wasn’t able to perform the simplest of procedures: Get a fresh Windows 10 install on the SSD after putting it in the laptop. Several readers emailed me with solutions, but what they also did was to prove to me that Microsoft has a serious upgrade problem on its hands.
