Apple has some exciting surprises in store for the Apple Watch Series 5

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As is typically the case, Apple’s new trio of iPhone models will likely garner the lion’s share of attention at the company’s upcoming fall media event. That said, it’s not as if Apple’s fall event — which will likely take place on Tuesday, September 10 — will be strictly an iPhone-only affair. If history is any indication, Apple this year will also roll out a completely new iteration of its increasingly popular Apple Watch.

Though iPhone releases over the past few years have been somewhat incremental with respect to new features, Apple has really done a tremendous job of adding compelling and exciting new features to the Apple Watch with each new release. From the introduction of cellular connectivity on the Apple Watch Series 3 to the rollout of enhanced new health and fitness tracking features on the Apple Watch Series 4, the rumored Apple Watch Series 5 will presumably offer up a slew of intriguing new features as well.

Cobra’s Road Scout combines a cutting-edge radar detector with a dash cam, and it costs less than you think

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When it comes to connected radar detectors with smart features like crowd-sourced alerts, GPS false alarm memory and a global data base, the Escort MAX360 is the model that comes to most people’s minds. Well, guess what: there’s a new option in town and it does everything the MAX360 can do and more… plus it has a built-in 1080p dash camera… plus it’s $100 cheaper!

We’ve spent the past week testing the Cobra Road Scout Dash Cam and Radar Detector in place of the Escort model we normally use, and we are thoroughly impressed. The range is easily just as good as the MAX360, the features and app control are terrific, and having a built-in dash cam that records in Full HD is brilliant. The dash cam add-on for the MAX360 is another $200 on top of the $550 you already spent on the radar detector itself. Meanwhile, the Cobra Road Scout is only $449.95 on Amazon — that’s $300 less than the combo from Escort!

Of note, if you don’t need a radar detector and you just want a high-quality dash camera, the Cobra Drive Dash Cam Dash2208 and the Cobra Drive HD Dash Cam DASH2216D are both terrific options.

Cobra Road Scout Dash Cam and Radar Detector, WiFi, Bluetooth, iRadar Compatible, HD 1080P Dash…: $449.95

Here’s some additional info from the product page:

  • 2-IN-1 RADAR DETECTOR & DASH CAM – Long range cobra radar detector combined with a high definition dash cam to capture and share unexpected moments. Built in Bluetooth provides community alerts from the Cobra iRadar app.
  • HIGH RESOLUTION DASH CAMERA FOR CARS – In-car video management on smartphone through direct Wifi connectivity to view, share, and edit videos. Full HD 1080p, enhanced night vision, and continuous loop recording provide for high quality video capabilities.
  • UNMISTAKEABLE DETECTION RANGE & ACCURACY – The best of police radar detector technology and radar detectors for cars, with Digital Signal processing detects real-time radar, laser, live patrol, and speed traps.
  • FAST, PRECISE, & RELIABLE ALERTS – Compatible with iRadar app for real-time crowd sourced speed trap notifications, preloaded with red light and speed camera location which trigger GPS-based laser-precise alerts.
  • EVERYTHING IN ONE CASE – Carry along the heavy duty EZ Mag Mount, 16GB SD Card, SmartCord, and micro USB cable accessories all in the convenient carry case.

What if this was the iPhone 11?

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple will undoubtedly still have a few surprises left in store when it unveils its new iPhone 11 lineup next month, but most of what is discussed on stage that day will be old news. In fact, we already know exactly when Apple will reveal the new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro handsets (September 10th), when they’ll go up for preorder (September 13th), and when they’ll be released online and in stores (September 20th). The two flagship models, which are rumored to be called the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max (ugh) will look almost exactly like their predecessors, but they’ll feature a new triple-lens rear camera like the one shown in the render above. Then, the entry-level iPhone 11 model will have a similar square camera array, but with two lenses instead of three. We’re also expecting new frosted class on the back and even a new color option for the iPhone 11 Pro models, plus a big boost in performance, of course.

That’s all well and good, but it’s also pretty boring if we’re being honest. Apple’s 2019 iPhone 11 lineup will sport a notch and an 80-something percent screen-to-body ratio when Android vendors are already toying with new form factors and making all-screen smartphones with ratios above 95%. But what if Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 11 was like the iPhone concept in the video below?

Watch Nintendo reveal a bunch of Switch games in this morning’s live stream

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re just a few months removed from E3 2019, where Microsoft and Nintendo each showed off dozens of new titles coming soon to their respective consoles, but in recent years, Nintendo has taken to rationing out its announcements throughout the year via live streamed showcases. The latest is called Indie World, which kicks off at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET on Monday, featuring “roughly 20 minutes of information on indie games coming to Nintendo Switch.”

Nintendo used to call these events Nindies Showcases in the US, and Indie World in Japan, but the company seems to have consolidated branding across continents this time around. That said, if you watched the Nindies Showcase in March, you should basically know what to expect from the stream this morning.

At a private dinner, Tim Cook told Trump that his tariffs are hurting Apple and helping Samsung

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple investors over the past few weeks have been particularly wary of looming tariff increases on a range of products imported from China. With some devices potentially subject to a tax as high as 25%, it’s widely expected that Apple, when push comes to shove, will eat the tax as opposed to passing along the additional cost to consumers. Either way, Apple’s bottom line is poised to take a hit.

In the meantime, Apple has been lobbying hard to convince the Trump administration that tariffs might lead to a range of unintended consequences. During a June letter Apple sent to US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, for example, the company argued that the tariffs would bolster competitors not based in the US.

MIT developed Wi-Fi technology that could seriously improve Netflix binge watching

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Streaming services like Netflix are worthless without an active internet connection, and your binging sessions will suffer some serious interruption whenever there’s no decent Wi-Fi or cellular connection. As much as Netflix and other companies can adapt their stream to your internet speed, that might not be enough to avoid buffering completely, especially on crowded networks. But MIT has a different solution, one that could help reduce the time you spend waiting for your streaming service to load content.
