Intel’s new chips just fixed the worst thing about ultrathin laptops

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It was only a few months ago that Intel unveiled a series of brand new 10th-gen processors that can deliver more powerful graphics performance to super slim laptops. The chipmaker isn’t done updating its product line, and we now have a few extra additions to its 10th-gen chip line.

This time around, the focus isn’t so much on graphics performance, but on CPU power and RAM improvements. The new Comet Lake series of chips will join Ice Lake under Intel’s broad 10th-gen Core chips mantle.

Kit Harington loved the end of Jon Snow’s story in ‘Game of Thrones’ so much that he cried

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The ending to HBO’s Game of Thrones eighth and final season certainly divided the series’ passionate fan base like no series has done in recent memory, leading to online meltdowns so epic that a petition for HBO to re-do the whole season with new showrunners is still attracting new signatures. It’s surpassed 1.7 million as of the time of this writing, which underscores how the way the show drew to a close left so many fans unhappy — while one of the show’s stars, as you might expect, is not having it.

Kit Harington, who gave us eight seasons of Jon Snow, has just sat for a new interview in which he stresses that he’s not only satisfied with how his character arc ended. It actually left him so happy he cried.

Elon Musk walks back ‘Nuke Mars’ idea, says maybe satellites will work better

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s only been a few days since SpaceX boss Elon Musk fired off a tweet reminding everyone that he wants to “nuke Mars,” but he’s already offered a possible alternative to that wild proposal. In a tweet on Tuesday, Musk proposed launching thousands of solar reflectors to the Red Planet in order to heat up the planet’s surface, melt its reserves of ice, and release CO2 that could help form a more robust Martian atmosphere.

Humans are headed to Mars sooner rather than later, but what we’re going to do once we get there remains to be seen. Dreams of establishing a colony on Mars may depend on our ability to make Mars a bit more like Earth, and that would mean beefing up the atmosphere.

More evidence that Apple will bring Apple Pencil support to iPhone 11

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If it indeed turns out that iPhones in Apple’s next-generation lineup will include support for Apple Pencil, there will almost certainly be tons of replaying of Steve Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone back in 2007 — and rehashes, specifically, of his comments at a particular moment during the introduction.

You can probably imagine where this is going. “Who wants a stylus?” Steve asked rhetorically to the audience, feigning disgust. “You have to get ’em, put ’em away, you lose ’em. Yuck! Nobody wants a stylus.” 12 years later, some insiders believe that’s exactly what we’re about to get from Apple.

Europe’s new Mars rover has alien-hunting eyes

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s Mars 2020 mission is inching toward its eventual launch in July of next year, but it’s not the only rover that has an upcoming date with the Red Planet. The ExoMars program, which is a joint venture between the European Space Agency and Russia’s Roscosmos, is expected to launch a new mission at around the same time and will arrive on Mars in March of 2021, shortly after the NASA’s mission lands in February.

The ExoMars rover mission is similar to NASA’s Mars 2020 efforts, but the ESA is emphasizing that one of the rover’s primary goals will be the search for life extraterrestrial life. To that end, the ExoMars bot was just equipped with a high-tech camera that will help it hunt down locations where evidence of past (or even current) life may be hiding.

Microsoft contractors listened to conversations from Xbox One users

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In a story that shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point, Vice is reporting that contractors working for Microsoft were able to listen to voice commands and full-on conversations spoken by Xbox One users. Similar to stories we’ve seen involving Siri and other virtual assistants, audio of conversations was sometimes recorded by the Xbox when certain trigger words were registered by mistake.

Naturally, the reason contractors were listening to audio in the first place was to improve the overall reliability of the software. Still, the notion of contractors listening to user audio — especially when children are involved — is bound to raise a few eyebrows.

Samsung’s foldable phone ideas keep coming, even though the Galaxy Fold still isn’t out

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For those of you waiting for Samsung to finally make good on its promise as of a few weeks ago that its embarrassing Galaxy Fold design flubs have been fixed and that the phone will finally be released in September — well, keep waiting. We still don’t have a hard date for that release, and yet Samsung has nevertheless stayed busy behind the scenes cranking out designs for all kinds of new foldable phones that may or may not actually ever see the light of day.

On the heels of getting word that Motorola’s foldable Razr — based on the phone maker’s iconic series of clamshell phones — should be out by the end of this year, a newly published Samsung patent for a foldable phone with a clamshell design has just been spotted.

A huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth will fly by us next month

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Some astronomers have suggested that Earth is overdue for a large asteroid impact, and that we’re living on borrowed time until we can shore up our planetary defenses to protect us from a true “planet-killer” space rock. With a potentially mile-wide asteroid headed to our neck of the woods in September, that notion may be enough to make your palms sweat, but it seems luck is on our side once again.

The object known as 467317 (2000 QW7) may lack a flashy nickname, but it more than makes up for it in size. The space rock is estimated to be anywhere from around 3,000 feet to nearly a mile and a half wide, putting it in the running to be one of the more frightening space rocks to show its face near our planet.
