New Instagram chat app will encourage you to share location and real-time data with ‘close friends’
After killing Direct, which was supposed to be Instagram’s own messaging system, Facebook is going to unveil a new chat app that will be tied to Instagram accounts, as if the world needed more Facebook messaging apps. However, an Instagram-based chat app can play a more prominent role in Facebook’s ecosystem. Messenger and WhatsApp are already in use by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and Facebook plans to unify them into a single, private chat product. That product, however, should also incorporate Instagram’s messaging app.
The problem with Threads, which is what the app is called, is that it’ll actively encourage users to share more details with close friends, not just messages and status updates. And the list includes sensitive information like location, battery life, and even speed.

Colossal mass of volcanic material is drifting toward the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is in bad shape, and humans are to blame. Warming seas due to climate change have led to extreme “bleaching” of much of the coral that makes up the reef, effectively killing it and turning once-vibrant stretches of the reef into underwater wastelands.
Australia has committed hundreds of millions of dollars to attempt to revive parts of the reef that are, at the moment, essentially dead, but now it looks like Mother Nature might be trying to offer humanity a helping hand. An absolutely massive “raft” of volcanic material spewed from beneath the ocean has been spotted drifting toward Australia, and once it gets there it could help bolster life in and around the reef.

AT&T and FTC settle data-throttling dispute
AT&T and the Federal Trade Commission have finally reached a settlement as part of a dispute that’s been ongoing since 2014 over an accusation that AT&T throttles the data speed of wireless users on unlimited data plans.
The terms (and value) of the settlement reached aren’t yet clear. And it seems the settlement likewise isn’t final, since both parties asked the US District Court in San Francisco for the FTC to be allowed to review and eventually vote to approve the settlement.

Locals warned that SpaceX Starhopper test could shatter windows
SpaceX’s Starship project is one if its most ambitious efforts yet. The company envisions various versions of the spacecraft eventually traveling to the Moon, Mars, and even to other star systems, but first it has to get off the ground.
The SpaceX Starhopper is the prototype test vehicle that the company is using to test the technologies that will power the full-sized Starship in the future, and it’s scheduled to fire up again tonight. That’s a big deal for SpaceX, but it might be an even bigger deal for the residents of Boca Chica Village in Texas which sits a very short distance from the Starhopper test launch facility.

Disney is working around the clock to prevent Disney+ streaming issues at launch
Disney’s streaming service will launch in less than three months, but the closer we get, the more reasons we have to be excited about Netflix’s newest contender. Just recently, we learned that Disney+ cheapest subscription will support four simultaneous streams and 4K video playback at launch, which tops Netflix.
On the other hand, Netflix does have an advantage when it comes to binge-watching TV series, as Disney+ will only release one new episode per week for the original shows it streams on the service. But before people get to actually enjoy all the new Disney+ shows coming their way, Disney has to ensure it can deliver a smooth service experience, something the company is very concerned about.

New gene-editing technique shows promise in negating bad mutations
We’ve all heard a lot about genetic modification this year, thanks in large part to one Chinese scientist taking it upon himself to edited the genes of human babies. His work was universally decried by fellow scientists and he got himself into some serious trouble because of it.
But genetic modification is an incredible tool that is showing promise in besting some really awful conditions, and it might not be long before scientists can selectively “fix” inherited diseases before they become a problem. A new study published in Cell Research offers hope for making conditions like Huntington’s disease a thing of the past.

Google drops into third place for smart speaker shipments globally
A Chinese tech giant has inserted itself into what’s largely been a two-man competition in the smart speaker category up to this point between Amazon and Google.
Amazon’s place as the leading shipper with its line of Alexa-powered speakers remains unmatched. But a new report from tracking firm Canalys reveals a surprising finding — that Baidu, which only serves Chinese consumers, actually shipped more smart speakers and related display devices in the second quarter than Google, bumping Google down to third place globally.

Samsung comes out on top in iPhone XS Max vs. Galaxy Note 10+ drop test
All-screen phones are clearly the future, but that future is substantially more fragile than what long-time smartphone owners may be accustomed to. Both Apple and Samsung have released flagship phones over the last year that have displays which nearly run from the top of the device all the way to the bottom, and as a result, the chances of cracking that display are higher than they’ve ever been. But now that they’re both available to the public, which phone is more durable: Apple’s iPhone XS Max from 2018 or the recently-released Galaxy Note 10+?
