Fisherman snags ‘alien’ fish that looks like something straight out of a horror movie

Earth’s oceans are home to an incredible number of interesting creatures, and sometimes certain species show up where you’d least expect them. That’s exactly what happened to a fisherman off the coast of Norway during a routine fishing trip that yielded a beast rarely seen near the surface.

Oscar Lundahl, a 19-year-old fishing guide for Nordic Sea Angling, was hoping to catch some blue halibut in deep water off the coast. Instead, Lundahl snagged a ratfish, and if you didn’t know better, you might think it was something from another dimension.

This brilliant app cancels your subscriptions for you before the free trials end

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s increasingly a subscription-based world we live in. Nobody buys music to own anymore; they pay for monthly subscriptions to streaming services. Between Netflix, cable packages, news media — even new offerings like the soon-to-launch Apple Arcade, a $5/month gaming service that includes the first month free — it’s a lot to keep track of. Thankfully, the app DoNotPay has launched a new feature called Free Trial Surfing that purports to take some of the pain out of subscriptions. Specifically, around the free trial periods of subscriptions that people often forget about and then start unwittingly paying for after the free trial ends.

Astronomers snap photo of second known interstellar object

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The astronomy world received a rare treat last week when an object presumed to be from outside our own solar system was spotted for only the second time ever. At the time, very little was known about the interstellar visitor, but in the days since its initial discovery by an amateur skywatcher, high-powered telescopes have been directed at the object to get a better look.

Now, the Gemini Observatory has released a stunning image of the object, which has been named C/2019 Q4 (Borisov). The object, which is now believed to be a comet, is easily identifiable thanks to its hazy, cone-shaped tail.

A brand new Android phone you can’t buy is as close as we’ve seen to a perfect design

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re getting awfully close to the all-screen phone with all want, thanks to several innovations that have allowed smartphone vendors to reduce bezels to a minimum and increase screen real estate without also increasing the overall footprint of the handset. Most phones still come with various design compromises as technology isn’t quite ready to deliver a perfect all-screen handset with a display that hides the selfie camera, 3D face recognition sensors, fingerprint sensors, and speaker. That’s why we have phones with notches, slide-out cameras, and hole-punch displays.

But a new device announced this week, which you can’t actually buy, gets us even closer to that design.

NASA will fire a tiny satellite into the lunar orbit planned for Gateway

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA is sending humans back to the Moon, and they’re doing it on an abbreviated timetable, but in addition to getting boots on the lunar surface, the space agency wants to get an orbiting lunar space station up and running for the first time ever.

The Gateway, which NASA says will serve as a jumping-off point for missions to the Moon, will be placed in a highly elongated orbit. Not wanting to risk stumbling upon an issue at the very last moment, NASA is now going to launch a tiny CubeSat satellite into that same orbit, offering scientists a preview of how the Gateway will travel once it arrives.

Based on the latest data that streaming search engine Reelgood shared with BGR by way of presenting a look at the Top 15 shows its users binged over the past week, here’s one thing you notice: Two series out of the top five are Amazon originals (Carnival Row and The Boys). Microsoft’s dual-screen Surface may have tech that could improve foldable phones

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft is widely expected to unveil a few brand-new Surface models in early October in addition to the successors to the Surface Pro and Laptop lines. The company will introduce its first Surface devices packing AMD and ARM processors, as well as the Lite version of Windows 10 that should work on ARM-powered laptops.

And while Microsoft might not launch its dual-screen Surface gadget until next year, the company could unveil it at the upcoming show. Even if Microsoft doesn’t announce the so-called Centaurus device in the coming weeks, we’ve heard plenty of stories that suggest such a device is in the making. And a new finding indicates that Microsoft has designed a foldable device component that may come in handy to smartphone vendors exploring foldable devices.
