Mars’ North Pole looks so bizarre in new photo by ExoMars orbiter
The Mars we often seen in photos from rovers and orbiters is dry, dusty, and barren, but there are parts of the planet that, when viewed separately, could trick you into thinking you’re looking at a totally foreign alien land. The latest snapshot captured by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter fits perfectly into that latter category.
The image was captured using the CaSSIS camera, one of the orbiter’s many instruments, and it shows the frosty dunes that cover the northern region of Mars that is rarely seen up-close. It also definitely looks at least a little bit like cookie-flavored ice cream.

iPhone 11 preorders start strong as consumers flock to the Pro models
There’s no getting around the fact that iPhone sales over the past few years have been somewhat stagnant at best. This, though, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that iPhone users are holding onto their devices for much longer than in years past on account of improved durability and incremental upgrades.
The iPhone 11, though, might be just the device to compel existing iPhone owners to upgrade. With the early iPhone 11 reviews already out, the general consensus appears to be that Apple’s next-gen iPhone is a tremendous upgrade thanks to a best-in-class camera and outstanding battery life. What’s more, early reports suggest that iPhone 11 pre-orders are already more impressive than what Apple saw with its 2018 iPhone lineup.

Surface Pro 7 specs leak ahead of Microsoft’s big Windows 10 event
Microsoft will hold a press event on October 2nd, where it will introduce several Surface hardware updates, as well as a huge surprise, if rumors are to be believed. We’re talking about the expected updates for the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines, but also a couple of Surface 2-in-1 devices that will be new to Microsoft’s line, powered by AMD and ARM chips. The latter is also tied to a different type of Windows 10 experience that could supposedly power Windows-on-ARM devices.
The surprise announcement could come in the form of Centaurus, which is the code name of Microsoft’s rumored dual-screen Surface. The device isn’t expected to launch this year, but Microsoft could still unveil it to showcase its advancements when it comes to this particular form factor. While we wait for Microsoft’s launch event, however, we can tell you what to expect from the upcoming Surface Pro 7 in terms of specs and prices.

Scientists spot bizarre shape-shifting jellyfish, and it’s carrying a passenger
For scientists exploring the deepest reaches of Earth’s oceans, surprises are hiding around just about every corner. Poking around on the ocean floor is difficult, and much of the wildlife that calls those deep waters home remains unidentified. Expeditions like those conducted by the Nautilus group regularly observe creatures nobody has ever documented before, and earlier this month they found a jellyfish that seemed to defy the laws of physics.
Believed to be a member of the Deepstaria jelly family, the creature looked relatively normal at first, with a soft, pinkish body and organs positions at the top of its bell, but things got weird in a hurry.

Amazon has a great new feature that Spotify and Apple Music both lack
Amazon isn’t always given the same prominence as its rivals in the music streaming game like Spotify and Apple, but the internet retail giant is hoping a new feature it’s begun rolling out changes that.
On Tuesday, Amazon announced Amazon Music HD, a new tier added to its existing service that presents songs in what Amazon raves is high-definition. The new tier, which costs $12.99/month for Amazon Prime members and $14.99/month for non-Prime customers, offers more than 50 million “lossless HD songs.”

The real reason why the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera has such an unusual design
Ever since the iPhone 11 Pro design leaked, some people have expressed their hatred for the huge bump on the back that houses the phone’s triple-lens camera, which was placed in a square module. But it turns out that is indeed the real design that Apple used for the rear camera on the Pro phones this year.
While it might not be pleasing to the eyes, the camera design, bump included, are necessary trade-offs that most people will get used to, just like they did with the notch two years ago when the iPhone X came out. It turns out that Apple has a real reason to place the triple-lens sensors as it did on the back of the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, though, and it has nothing to do with making the most of available space.

Explosion at Russian lab housing smallpox virus somehow hasn’t triggered the apocalypse… yet
Scientists studying deadly pathogens have to be extremely careful to ensure troublesome viruses and bacteria don’t somehow make it out of their controlled environments. That means donning lots of protective gear, checking and then re-checking safety systems, and ensuring security is top-notch. Unfortunately, explosions have a way of rendering all those precautions moot.
A blast rocked Russia’s State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology on Monday, and since the facility is one of only two in the world that keeps live smallpox samples on-hand, officials were understandably concerned. However, the latest update out of Russia suggests that humanity may have dodged a huge bullet, and that no hazardous pathogens were unleashed.

You can’t even buy the Galaxy Fold yet and Samsung is already teasing a better foldable phone
The Galaxy Fold failed to give Samsung the triumph in wanted this year. Making foldable phones is no easy feat and Samsung has been teasing these devices for years, to the point where everyone following the business was expecting the Korean giant to be at the forefront of foldable phone innovation. Samsung was also the first major smartphone vendor to unveil a foldable phone. Sadly, for the Galaxy Fold, it was also the first company to have to deal with the harsh reality of actually making a durable folding phone.
The Galaxy Fold is now five months behind schedule and it’s finally being released during the worst possible time of the year. New iPhones arrive every September, followed by a slew of high-end Android handsets. The Galaxy Fold, with its sky-high price tag, doesn’t seem to belong in this crowd. Samsung needs this win though; it needs to be able to tell the world that it fixed and shipped its first foldable device, so it can then begin to focus on the next-gen foldables. Incredibly, however, it looks like Samsung couldn’t even wait that long to move on.
