The magic black wallpaper that makes your iPhone dock and folders disappear is back
If you’ve been an iPhone fan for at least a few years, you’re undoubtedly drawing parallels right now between 2016 and 2019. Back in 2016, it was the first time ever that Apple decided to use the same iPhone design for three consecutive years. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus looked just like the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus from 2015, which obviously looked just like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from 2014. In order to boost interest and therefore sales in light of this decision, Apple added a couple of new color options to its iPhone lineup and also introduced a dual-lens camera for the first time ever on an iPhone. It ended up being more than enough to pique Apple fans’ interest, and it actually marked the last year before iPhone sales began to decline.
Fast-forward to 2019, and Apple has once again decided to use the same iPhone design for a third consecutive year. The iPhone 11 series looks just like the iPhone XR and iPhone XS series from last year, which used the same design as the iPhone X from 2017. And as was the case back in 2016, Apple introduced a new color option and a new camera in an effort to boost sales. But there’s another similarity between 2016 and 2019, and it has nothing to do with Apple. Back in 2016 when Apple introduced the new Jet Black color option on the iPhone 7, a graphic designer named Hideaki Nakatani, who goes by @heyeased on Twitter, discovered a glitch in iOS that allowed him to create a special black wallpaper that made the dock and folder backgrounds on the iPhone disappear. It looked amazing, and people went crazy for it. Apple ended up fixing the glitch a few months later, much to users’ dismay. But now, after all this time, Nakatani is back with a new “magic wallpaper” that makes the dock and folder backgrounds disappear.

AirPods have never been cheaper on Amazon than they are right now
Apple’s AirPods started it all. No, they weren’t the first true wireless earbuds in the world, but can you name a pair that was released before AirPods? Don’t worry, no one else can either because it was Apple’s AirPods that caused cord-free earbuds’ explosion in popularity. If you have an iPhone and you want cordless buds, AirPods are obviously the most popular choice. And lucky for you, Amazon is running sales on both AirPods models that drop them to their lowest prices yet. Apple’s $159 AirPods with the normal charging case are down to $144 right now, while the $199 AirPods with Wireless Charging Case get double the discount, slashing the price to just $169. That’s only $10 more than you would pay for the base model AirPods if you bought them from Apple, so it’s definitely a terrific deal.

Lyft’s massive update competes more with Google Maps than Uber
Ride-sharing app Lyft has done something we wouldn’t have seen coming a few years ago when the company was battling Uber for supremacy in the various markets where the two apps are available. Lyft released a massive update that makes the application compete more against navigation apps like the popular Google Maps than Uber and other ride-sharing alternatives. That’s because the Lyft app now has functionalities that extend well beyond the app’s initial purpose. You’ll now be able to find public transportation information right inside the app, in addition to Lyft cars, scooters and bikes, which means Lyft has no problem recommending services that aren’t exactly profitable for the company.

Mario Kart Tour was just released for iPhone and Android with a subscription as expensive as Apple Arcade
We knew it was coming out on September 25th, and it’s finally here. Mario Kart Tour is available on iPhone and Android, and fans of the series will certainly be thrilled to start playing a version of Mario Kart on smartphones. However, just because you downloaded the game from the App Store or Google Play doesn’t mean you can start racing right away. You’ll first need to register a Nintendo account and log-in inside the app — of course, many people already have Nintendo accounts so that shouldn’t be too much of a hassle. Still, it’s an extra step that might prevent some people from playing the game the second the installation ends.

Diet study says we’re still eating way too many bad carbs
Remember the old food pyramid from a couple of decades ago? You know, the one that showed you should essentially eat as much bread and pasta as you could stand while ditching fats? Well, with obesity levels at all-time highs and no shortage of research showing carbs are a big culprit, it seems that antiquated diet advice is still being put to use.
A new study published in JAMA focused on dietary habits and how trends have shifted over the past 18 years. I’d like to be able to say that things are getting better, but as the data reveals, that simply isn’t the case, and trash carbs are still a major problem.

Scientists sliced up a bunch of tapeworms to figure out how they regrow their bodies
Tapeworms might not be the cutest or cuddliest of creatures cooked up by Mother Nature, but what they lack in charm, they more than make up for with a few very special abilities. You see, tapeworms have the incredible power to shed and then regrow huge lengths of their own bodies, and it’s an ability that scientists haven’t been able to fully explain.
Now, new research published in eLife reveals the very special cells that give tapeworms the capacity to generate new bodies. To figure it out, scientists led by Tania Rozario of the University of Wisconsin-Madison had to chop some of the parasites up.

‘The Last of Us Remastered’ and ‘MLB The Show 19’ are October’s free PS Plus games
Sony’s hot streak of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers continues as two first-party, triple-A titles are being given away in October. This is precisely what PlayStation 4 owners were hoping for when Sony opted to stop giving away PS3 and PS Vita games — they wanted quality over quantity, and they’re getting it next month.
The biggest surprise is the addition of MLB The Show 19 to the PS Plus lineup, as the game is only a few months old. It was also incredibly well-received, so if you’re looking for a good baseball sim, this is the game to get. But the other title is no slouch either, as the remastered version of The Last of Us will give PS4 owners a chance to play through the original game ahead of the sequel’s launch, which was just revealed to be February 21st.

Apple’s new Apple Watch Series 5 is now available and all things told, it’s a pretty minor update compared to the previous-generation model.
