Popping a champagne cork generates a tiny supersonic shockwave

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When you pop the cork on a champagne bottle, the physics of the cork’s departure probably isn’t the first thing on your mind — it’s drinkin’ time, after all! But scientists tend to find interesting things in the most unlikely of places, and a new study published in Science Advances reveals that the loud pop that you hear when cracking open a new bottle of champagne is accompanied by the birth of a tiny shockwave.

Using high-speed cameras to capture the tiniest details of the cork popping in slow motion, the researchers easily spotted the phenomenon. The shockwave, also called a Mach disk, appears in the plume streaming out of the top of the bottle in the instant the cork is shot out at high speed.

Google Images just made it more difficult to find the photo you’re looking for

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The origin story of Google Images is a bit unusual and, believe it or not, can be traced all the way back to the iconic green dress Jennifer Lopez wore at the February 2000 Grammy Awards. In the hours and days following the event, the number of searches for Lopez’ dress absolutely skyrocketed, with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt a few years ago noting: “At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen.”

The problem, though, was that Google’s search results at the time were nothing more than a collection of links. In turn, Schmidt and Google’s search time quickly realized that they had “no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted.” And so, Google Images was born.

10 new trailers you need to watch: The Irishman, El Camino, Frozen 2, and more

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Downton Abbey beat Ad Astra and Rambo: Last Stand last week in ticket sales, and this week we’ve got a couple of new contenders that might go after the top spot, including an animated feature (Abominable) and a film based on Judy Garland’s life (Judy). If none of those caught your eye, but you’re still looking to catch up with new releases, Ad Astra could be one to consider — or at least keep in mind for when it hits streaming services.

Brad Pitt absolutely deserves an Oscar nod for best actor for his performance in this one, and the cinematography in space is amazing. Writer/director James Gray should also be rewarded for this thought-provoking, beautifully made movie. Speaking of streaming, the super silly Between Two Ferns: The Movie awaits on Netflix, if you’re staying in.

Astronomers spotted a planet that shouldn’t exist

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When we imagine what other solar systems are like it’s easy to fall into a trap of assuming that our own system is a model that all others must follow. That’s simply not the case, and astronomers know that solar systems come in all shapes and sizes, but even still, the system orbiting the star GJ 3512 is a real weirdo.

GJ 3512 is a tiny star. It’s a red dwarf, and it’s only around one-eighth the mass of our own Sun. Typically, stars are significantly larger than the planets that orbit them, and scientists would expect the world near a star like this would be pint-sized by comparison. As a new paper published in Science reveals, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Astronauts on the ISS are playing with slime while waiting for new cargo shipment

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Earlier this week, Japanese space agency JAXA fired off a new resupply to the International Space Station. With such a busy week aboard the ISS — new crew members also arrived this week — the shipment of science experiments and supplies has somewhat flown under the radar, but now it’s crunch time, and the resupply mission is expected to arrive at the orbiting laboratory on Saturday morning.

The cargo spacecraft from Japan is carrying over four tons of supplies for the space station, including vitals like food, along with scientific hardware and experiments. In the meantime, the crew is playing with slime. Yep, slime.
