When news broke late last month about a fugitive in Wisconsin who had made his home in a makeshift bunker in the middle of the woods and lived there for three years before being discovered, it seemed pretty wild. But that Wisconsin man can’t hold a candle to one Song Moujiang, a Chinese man who escaped from jail 17 years ago and was only just now discovered living in a cave in the mountains of Yunnan.

The fugitive, who was reportedly discovered with the help of an aerial drone and tips from people who had spotted someone hiding out in the area, hadn’t seen a soul for nearly two decades.

Groundbreaking blood test could detect over 20 types of cancer

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Modern medical innovations have given doctors the power to screen for a variety of cancers, and that’s great, but screening for multiple types of cancers at the same time, and with a single test, is essentially still a pipe dream.

However, that may be about to change thanks to a new kind of blood test that researchers say is showing serious promise. The test, developed by a company called GRAIL, may be able to accurately detect over 20 different types of cancer by hunting for their unique signatures in the DNA found in a blood sample.

YouTube TV finally available on Amazon Fire TV streaming devices

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Despite being one of the most polished and feature-rich live TV services on the market, YouTube TV has had one big flaw ever since it launched in 2017: lack of Fire TV support. This was caused by a long-running feud between Amazon and Google, but now that the companies have finally made up, Amazon has officially brought the YouTube TV app to a wide variety of its Fire TV devices, including Fire TV Edition smart TVs.

Unlike many other live TV services, YouTube TV does not offer multiple plans, but rather a single subscription which features over 70 live channels for $49.99 a month. In addition to a wide selection of channels, a subscription will also net you unlimited cloud storage and the ability to share your account with five other people.

CDC clarifies stance on vaping illness, admits that bootleg THC products are likely to blame

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In a “better late than never” move, the CDC has issued an update to its documentation on the so-called “vaping illness” that has been sweeping the nation over the past two months. THC products, the agency says, are likely a major factor, with unregulated street-level sales of tainted THC vape cartridges being the primary culprit.

In a new press release, the CDC notes that over three-quarters of people who have reported lung issues after vaping already admitted to using street-bought THC oils, with only 16% of people insisting that they vaped nicotine-based products. Mmhmm. This, combined with recent investigations revealing harmful ingredients in unlicensed THC products further supports what many have been saying from the start: It’s not vaping that’s the problem.

Meat-free McDonald’s burgers are rolling out today

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

You know that a trend has officially gone mainstream when it arrives at McDonald’s, which is exactly where the plant-based Beyond Meat burger landed this week. As the fast-food chain announced last week, it will begin a 12-week test on Monday of a sandwich it has cleverly dubbed the P.L.T. (Plant. Lettuce. Tomato.) in 28 restaurants in Ontario. The P.L.T. is made with Beyond Meat’s patty and “has been crafted exclusively by McDonald’s, for McDonald’s.”

As Ann Wahlgren, McDonald’s VP of Global Menu Strategy, explained in a recent article on the McDonald’s website, the company has been keeping a close eye on the rising interest in meat alternatives in recent months, and believes that now is the right time to test its own plant-based burger in one of its major markets.

Elon Musk presents Starship to the world

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you even casually follow space news you’ve no doubt already heard of SpaceX’s Starship. Starship — and the Super Heavy launch vehicle that will send it skyward — are SpaceX’s big bet on the future of space travel, and Elon Musk imagines that one day, Starship will head to Mars and beyond.

The project is coming along swiftly, but SpaceX had yet to actually present its creation to the world in any formal way. That changed this weekend, with Elon Musk showing off the most fully-realized version of Starship we’ve seen to date, and speaking at length about its development and the company’s plans for the future.
