One of Pixel 4’s signature features looks like a gimmick you probably won’t use

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Pixel 4 will have a few distinctive signature features that make it sound like a better proposition, at least on paper, than other Android devices, and Google already confirmed them a few months ago. First, Google teased the dual-lens camera on the back, which makes the Pixel 4 the first Google phone with two rear-facing cameras. Then the company announced its own 3D face recognition system as well as the radar-based Motion Sense functionality. The later uses a Soli chip and sensors to pick up hand gestures and allow users to interact with the phone without touching it. That sounds great in theory, and might one day make possible gestures-only user interfaces like the ones seen in Minority Report. But a series of leaks suggest that, in practice, the Pixel 4’s gestures recognition system is pretty boring, and you might end up not using it in the first place.

Surface Duo already looks like a huge missed opportunity

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft on Wednesday finally unveiled its first dual-screen Surface device. But instead of a single gadget supposed to run a special version of Windows 10 able to run Android apps on top, Microsoft surprised the world with two different gadgets, including the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo. The Neo is a dual-screen tablet/laptop gadget that does indeed need a different operating system, one that Microsoft calls Windows 10 X. The Duo, meanwhile, is a smaller, pocketable Surface, that runs Android complete with Google apps. And that’s probably why the Duo feels like a huge missed opportunity.

Google Shopping just got a makeover, but it still doesn’t have a prayer against Amazon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google was talking up coming improvements to its online shopping service back in May at Google Marketing Live, promising that the absorption of the Google Express brand within Google Shopping would preface other changes meant to give shoppers more convenience and an all-around better shopping experience.

That’s all another way of saying the search giant has long wanted to grab a bigger piece of the market currently dominated by Amazon. By way of continuing down that path, Google today is announcing yet more news in this regard: A revamped design for Google Shopping that’s now available in the US for both mobile and desktop users.

India’s space agency refuses to give up on crashed Moon lander

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Early last month was supposed to be a time of celebration for India’s space agency ISRO. The group was poised to become the fourth nation on Earth to successfully perform a soft landing on the Moon. Things didn’t go as planned, and the Vikram lander crashed into the surface. Now, a month later, ISRO is apparently still attempting to salvage the mission, even as all hope appears well and truly lost.

In a new report out of India, ISRO claims there’s still a chance the lander could wake itself back up after the lunar night. With that in mind, the Vikram team is still attempting to establish a communication link with its doomed spacecraft.

Sorry, Apple and Disney: No one is abandoning Netflix anytime soon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re now basically a month out from the launch of two major new rivals that purport to represent serious competition for Netflix in the streaming space, with the launch of Apple TV+ on November 1 and then Disney+ a little more than a week after that, on November 12.

Netflix, for its part, remains the streaming leader but has been buffeted by a steady stream of negative headlines over the past few weeks and months in the lead-up to those November dates. Its stock has taken a hit, we keep getting word about studios pulling their content off the service, and there’s uncertainty about what the effect of these new services will be on Netflix’s bottom line.

Just try to pretend this new NASA snapshot isn’t the most incredible thing you’ve seen today

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With some of the most powerful imaging tools on Earth at its disposal, NASA and its scientists have captured countless lovely images of the cosmos over the years. Still, some images are undeniably better than others, and this stunning glimpse of a distant collection of star “bubbles” has to be near the top of the list.

As NASA explains, the bright areas of the image are absolutely bursting with star activity. The colorful blobs measure somewhere between 10 to 30 light-years across, and each one is packed with hundreds of thousands of stars, along with a wealth of gas and dust.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is coming to even more countries that won’t buy it soon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s first attempt at a foldable smartphone hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, with headlines about its long-delayed release mentioned in the same breath as its myriad design woes and the impossibly high price tag that sets the phone out of reach for most consumers. Nevertheless, Samsung is pressing ahead with an expansion of the foldable’s launch following a release in South Korea and the US.

India, select countries in the Middle East as well as Europe are all next in line to get the Fold, which costs almost $2,000 and nevertheless remains a supremely fragile, novel piece of technology.

NASA’s new drones are taking on bizarre shapes

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In the context of space exploration, the term “rover” conjures images of multi-wheeled robots with big, bulky bodies covered in scientific instruments. NASA’s Mars rovers are probably the most iconic of all, but when the space agency is ready to send a spacecraft to Saturn’s Moons, the bots that make the trip will likely look a whole lot different.

NASA recently announced its intentions to send a drone helicopter to Saturn’s moon Titan in the not-so-distant future. An aerial drone will provide scientists with the ability to travel over huge distances much more rapidly than would be the case with a ground-based rover, and the designs being tested are truly out of this world.
