Hooray! Ikea’s long-anticipated Fyrtur smart blinds are finally on sale
I was talking to someone recently who installs a variety of tech solutions in homes who noted as an aside that smart blinds are very soon going to be the standard, default solution — that there’s just no reason to have the traditional set of blinds anymore, when you can have one that operates at the push of a button.
That came to mind today in tandem with the news that Ikea has finally started the rollout of its Fyrtur smart blinds in some of its US stores after initially intending to release them earlier this year, back in April. You can find a number of stories from new outlets noting the delay and speculating on when they’d finally arrive, which speaks to the degree to which these have been anticipated (as do a number of Reddit posts that tried to deduce when the delay would end).

San Diego woman living in a van surrenders 320 pet rats
Rats have kind of a bad rap. Yeah, they’re scavengers in big cities and have a long and storied history of spreading disease, but generally speaking, they’re actually pretty lovely creatures. They’re smart, and they make very good pets. That is, unless you have *checks notes* over 300 of them.
As the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, a woman was recently found living in a van in a convenience store parking lot, and she definitely wasn’t alone. What had originally started as just a pair of pet rats exploded into a population of approximately 320. Yikes.

Is the binge model doomed? Netflix is still committed, but rivals want you to wait
Apple held a splashy premiere event a few days ago at the Regency Village Theater in Westwood, California to unveil its new Apple TV+ series For All Mankind. It’s one of the marquee launch titles that will be available on November 1st — a drama that offers an alternative history of the “Space Race” that in real life, of course, saw the US beat Russia to the moon. It’s got solid talent behind it, like Golden Globe nominee and Emmy Award-winner Ronald D. Moore, who also reimagined Battlestar Galactica in the early 2000s and garnered legions of fans. And it’s told through the eyes of fictional astronauts, engineers, and their families.

Sega Genesis Mini review: The retro console to beat
I haven’t been overly impressed by any of the mini consoles that have sprung up lately. The NES Classic Edition was enough of a novelty when it came out that even the most casual of gamers felt compelled to grab one and relive their childhoods, if only for a moment. But by the time Sony showed up to the party with its own PlayStation Classic, the world had seemingly moved on. The mini consoles were indeed just a short-lived fad.
At least, that was where I landed before I got my hands on the Sega Genesis Mini, which is the most well-conceived retro mini console to date. That honestly isn’t an especially high bar to clear, as the SNES Classic Edition is the only other one I’d even consider recommending to anyone, but Sega was able to impress me.

11 new trailers you need to watch: American Son, Dolittle, Frozen II, and more
We’ve been waiting for Zombieland: Double Tap for 10 years, and it’s finally here. But the new zombie comedy has some serious competition at the box office this week. The Maleficent and Jay and Silent Bob sequels are also out this week, as is Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit. On top of that, Joker might still have some juice left in its third week at the theater, even after obliterating the competition during the previous weekends.
As for trailers, we have a couple of exciting flicks from Netflix, as well as a new trailer for the Lady and the Tramp live-action film that will launch on Disney+ in a few short weeks. We’ve also got a couple of other trailers that are targeting the younger audience: Frozen II and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.

This ridiculous 3-hour trailer shows off every TV show and movie coming to Disney+
If there’s any streaming service that can legitimately compete with the juggernaut that is Netflix, it’s Disney+. Set to launch in just a few weeks, Disney+ will not only be extremely affordable at $7 a month, it will offer subscribers an absolute avalanche of media content. From beloved animation films of old to any Star Wars title you can think of, Disney+ will undoubtedly come out of the gate strong and will likely garner an impressive subscriber base in a relatively short period of time.
Earlier this week, the official Disney+ Twitter account started tweeting out a list of all the movies and TV shows set to arrive on the streaming service in early November. And seeing as how Disney has been making movies since 1937, some of the titles Disney highlighted were so incredibly bizarre that it left many people wondering if Disney was trying to troll us. You’d be forgiven, after all, for thinking that titles like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and The Barefoot Executive were completely made up.

Oh great, yet another face app is driving the internet crazy
If that image at the top of this post which late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel posted to his Twitter and Instagram feeds on Thursday doesn’t immediately look familiar to you, count yourself lucky. It means you somehow aren’t aware yet of the latest face app to take the internet by storm — it’s called Gradient, and thanks to influencers and other social media mavens helping it along, it’s been spreading across peoples’ feeds in recent days thanks to its pretty simple conceit: Matching your face to that of your celebrity doppelganger.

One of the best things about the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max this year are the incredible battery life improvements they bring.
