The iPhone 12’s most exciting new feature might have already leaked

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Last week, Apple afternoon reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $3.03 per share, handily beating the Street’s consensus on the back of record revenue totaling $64 billion. Anytime Apple has recorded a big beat like that in the past, we all knew that it could be attributed almost entirely to strong iPhone sales — but that’s not the case anymore. Top smartphone markets around the world are saturated and flagship devices are more expensive than ever, so people are keeping them longer than they have in the past. As a result, Apple recently adjusted its strategy to focus more on services and wearables. Considering Apple’s top smartphone rival Samsung just reported September-quarter profit that plummeted a whopping 56% on year, it’s fairly safe to say that Apple made the right decision by branching out.

There’s really no question that adjusting its strategy to rely less on iPhone sales was the proper move, but there’s also no question that the iPhone is still Apple’s most popular and most talked-about product. We all know that there’s simply nothing else in the consumer electronics industry that generates buzz like the iPhone. And considering next year’s new iPhone 12 lineup is shaping up to be Apple’s biggest update since the company released the overhauled iPhone X in 2017, it’s no mystery why the iPhone 12 is already generating so much buzz despite being nearly a year away from launching.

New Google Maps feature makes exploring your destinations even easier

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re used to seeing Google Maps updates regularly, and most of them are significant additions to the navigation app, like the incognito mode, augmented reality directions, or Waze-like crowdsourced incident reports. Others features are smaller in scope, but nonetheless important to some users, like seeing images with iconic dishes from restaurants in a specific area, or information about how crowded the next train or bus might be. Google has released a brand new Maps feature that falls into that second category, but this small feature has the potential of improving your sightseeing experiences going forward.

Apple is reportedly working with Valve on a totally new type of product like nothing we’ve seen

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Every once in a while, some analysts claim that Apple has to develop brand new products to reduce its bottom line’s reliance on the success of the iPhone. But Apple only releases products that make sense in the grand scheme of things, and that scheme includes the iPhones. Apple proved in recent years that it has a plan in place for making up for lost iPhone sales, and all the brand new products it happened to have released during the period were intimately related to the iPhone. While it’s unreasonable to expect every new Apple product to redefine a business, it happened with the Apple Watch and with the AirPods, both wearable devices launched in the past five years. We had smartwatches and wireless headphones before these two hit stores, but both the Apple Watch and AirPods set the tone in the industry — and they were both made for the iPhone, although the AirPods work great with anything else. Nobody is really calling for Apple to enter a new product category, but the company might soon do it. Apple is rumored to release a brand new type of product, one that’s been starring in more and more rumors of its own. And the latest story claims that Apple might do something different this time around and partner with Valve, a well-known gaming company, on this device that’s supposed to work primarily with an iPhone.

Nestle cookie dough recalled because it might have rubber in it

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With the holidays right around the corner, it’s as good a time as any to bust out the cookie cutters and get to work crafting some tasty treats. Nestle is easily one of the biggest names in cookies, and its Toll House cookie dough is incredibly popular. Unfortunately, if you happen to have some in your pantry, your cookie-baking plans may be delayed significantly.

In a new bulletin published today by the Food & Drug Administration, Nestle announces a voluntary recall of a whole bunch of its cookie dough products due to the potential for foreign matter contamination. More specifically, Nestle fears that its cookie dough might be tainted with rubber.

From the Galaxy Fold to a satellite crash-landing, Samsung’s had a godawful year

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When Samsung reported its dismaying 52% plunge in third-quarter profit in recent days, the company — which is the largest producer of memory chips in the world — blamed the result on weakness in the market for memory chips. For Samsung, that weakness was part and parcel of the long, strange year that 2019 has been, which has included the US ban of Huawei products — prompting Huawei to (you guessed it) stock up on chips to fuel its own aggressive smartphone ambitions.

For Samsung, meanwhile, the quarter’s result was one more unfortunate reality to tally up among many others this year, with 2019 having produced a long string of embarrassing and regrettable gaffes and other bad headlines for the South Korea-based tech giant.

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Nov. 3)

One of my favorite surprises on Netflix last year was the first season of The End of the F***ing World, which started as a graphic novel, was adapted for TV in the UK, and was then distributed internationally by Netflix. Much like Living With Yourself, it’s a propulsive show that never really lets up until the explosive finale. To be honest, I didn’t think that it needed another season, but I’m excited to see where the writers take it.

Some other highlights this week include District 9, a Seth Meyers stand-up comedy special, the fourth season of the She-Ra reboot, and more episodes of The Great British Baking Show, which I guess everyone loves.

She won’t be asked to file paperwork or conduct investigations, but her work is nonetheless valuable; Hatty will spend her days comforting individuals who need support while they navigate what might be the most stressful time of their lives.
