Here’s how HBO Max compares to Netflix, Hulu, and other streamers

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • HBO Max will debut tomorrow and may be the best streaming service for movie lovers.
  • HBO Max will also offer users a giant library of TV programming, including hits like Rick and Morty, Friends, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
  • HBO Max will cost $15/month, but a new promotion lets users sign up at a $12/month rate.

As someone who grew up a big TV fan, I never thought I’d see a day where it was literally impossible to keep up with what has become an avalanche of new content. Aside from regular cable TV and network offerings, you’ve got a steady stream of content coming out of Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu. More recently, Disney+ came onto the scene and immediately made an impact on the streaming landscape. Just a few months since its debut, Disney’s nascent streaming service has already amassed a whopping 54.5 million subscribers. And looking ahead, HBO Max is set to become available tomorrow and has a good chance of making a huge splash.

Suffice it to say, the number of streaming options these days is overwhelming. In light of that, our sister-site Variety recently put together an informative rundown which sets out to see how Netflix, HBO Max, Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon, and Apple TV Plus stack up against each other. The fact that Apple TV Plus is even in the mix here is somewhat generous, but that’s beside the point. What matters here every streaming service caters to a slightly different crowd, and figuring out which streaming service fits you best can be a bit daunting. If you’re a big movie buff, for example, you might want to steer clear of Hulu.

WHO warns of ‘second peak’ in coronavirus cases if we aren’t careful

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The World Health Organization warns that a “second peak” of novel coronavirus infections could come right behind the first if countries relax lockdown and social distancing measures too quickly.
  • While infection rates are down in some countries, many regions are still on the rise.
  • There is still a possibility of a second wave in the fall, but it could be preceded by a second peak in the first wave if countries aren’t careful.

Shortly after the novel coronavirus pandemic started, health experts began warning of a potential second wave in the fall (providing we made it through the first wave). Every country has handled the pandemic differently, some with more success than others, but if any of those countries reopen too quickly and relax the guidelines that they put in place to protect their populace, another spike in infections could be right around the corner.

Dr. Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme, told an online briefing that while cases are dropping in several countries, they are still on the rise in Central America, South America, South Asia, and Africa. He also reemphasized that epidemics often come in waves, and the countries that have seen their infection rates drop could be in for another wave later in the year. But, as he explained, we won’t have to wait nearly that long if we ease up on vital health and social measures too quickly.

How to watch NASA’s historic SpaceX launch on Wednesday

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • NASA and SpaceX are about to launch a historic mission to the International Space Station from U.S. soil for the first time in roughly a decade.
  • The launch will be live-streamed on NASA TV across all of its platforms.
  • This is the last step in the Commercial Crew program before SpaceX’s Crew Dragon can be certified by NASA.

After years of NASA’s Commercial Crew program partners working feverishly to deliver a crew-capable spacecraft for the space agency, we’re about to see the first launch of astronauts from U.S. soil since the end of the Space Shuttle program. The launch of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is officially a “go” right now, and it is expected to take place on Wednesday, May 27th, at 4:33 p.m. EDT.

It’s an incredibly important milestone not only for NASA but for SpaceX as well. It will be the first time a SpaceX craft will take to the skies with humans on board, and assuming all goes well, it will be the start of a new era in NASA manned spaceflight.

Here’s how to stay safe from coronavirus when eating at a restaurant

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Now that all 50 states have reopened their economies to one degree or another, here are some coronavirus tips to follow when you’re in a setting like a restaurant dining room.
  • At least 30 states have now allowed restaurants to reopen their dining rooms, generally maxed at a reduced capacity for now.
  • The behaviors you should follow there mirror the other coronavirus prevention measures people should already be doing, like washing your hands regularly.

Going out to eat again at a restaurant near my apartment, for the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, wasn’t as weird as I thought it might be. But there was also an abundance of reminders pretty much everywhere you looked to make the experience, if not quite the surreal dystopia that the scariest stories would have you believe, at least still weird enough to not let you forget that we’re living in extraordinary times.

I chose a comfort food-style pub after ordering to-go meals more than once from it while the quarantine/shelter-in-place rules were in place and restaurants were still closed to diners inside. I did so after seeing how well the restaurant had changed its operation and procedures to keep everyone safe, which gave me enough mental assurance that I would likewise be okay here once the dining room re-opens. It sounds like a bit of a drawn-out thought experiment in lieu of the snap judgments we once made about where to go to grab a bite to eat, but such is life in the coronavirus age. And the byzantine new rules that restaurants have to follow in order to keep their businesses safe and coronavirus-free, a tough task to pull off, aren’t going away anytime soon.

Exciting new study suggests we can definitely make a coronavirus cure

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A miracle coronavirus cure isn’t available at the moment, but scientists found more proof that the human immune system can develop neutralizing antibodies that can block the virus from infected cells.
  • These antibodies can be used to develop COVID-19 treatments, including vaccines and monoclonal antibodies that would work just like a plasma transfusion from a recovered patient.
  • Not all COVID-19 patients develop such strong antibodies, but the ones that can “kill” the virus have been found in several people who beat the disease.

The novel coronavirus is highly contagious and can be fatal, but it can also be killed. We just need to develop effective drugs that can speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications, and then make them widely available. Once that happens, it won’t matter as much that the virus can’t be eradicated or that the immunity we get after recovery is short-lived. And more and more studies have been proving that the kind of miracle drug that can kill SARS-CoV-2 is created right inside the human body, and it can be used to create effective vaccines and other meds that target the COVID-19 virus specifically.

These miraculous drugs are the antibodies the immune system gets trained to manufacture in response to any pathogen that enters the body. Immune cells identify the foreign cells, mark them, and destroy them. The antibodies that result can then stop the same infectious microorganism from infecting human cells again, and that’s why plasma therapies work. Now, researchers from Rockefeller University have published a study that details the existence of universally effective antibodies.

The coronavirus pandemic is still getting worse in these 24 US states

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers estimate that half of the states within the United States haven’t yet reached their peak levels of novel coronavirus infections.
  • A state-by-state breakdown shows that 24 states still don’t have the virus under control.
  • Whether you live in a state where the virus has seemingly peaked or not, remember that a second wave is all but a guarantee at this point, especially as states begin to loosen restrictions on gatherings and services.

The coronavirus pandemic has been raging in the United States for months now, but not every state has been impacted in the same way. Some states have likely seen the worst of the first wave of infections, while others are only now grappling with sharp increases in the number of cases they’re seeing.

A new study (PDF) from an international group of scientists and researchers uses existing data and predictive modeling to forecast when the disease will peak (or has peaked) in each individual state. Unsurprisingly, around half of the states in the country have yet to see a peak, and case numbers continue to grow.

Google tests a feature that lets you use your voice to make purchases

  • Google is testing a new feature that allows users to confirm purchases with Voice Match.
  • Users in the pilot program will see a new “Confirm with Voice Match” option in the settings menu that will allow them to complete certain transactions with nothing but their voice.
  • Google has yet to announce when or if this feature will roll out to the public.

Google is constantly adding new features and functionality to its apps and services, but on occasion, those features need to be tested by a large group of users before they roll out to the public. First spotted by Android Police, one such test is currently underway, giving Android users the option to confirm purchases they make on their devices with Voice Match. For those unaware, Voice Match allows users to teach Google Assistant to recognize their voice.

Shortly after discovering the new feature, Android Police received confirmation from a Google representative that the feature is being seeded to a limited number of users as part of a pilot program. It’s not clear if the feature will roll out widely, but Google has started updating online documentation to reflect its arrival.

Save $50 on a 50″ 4K Fire TV or get a 32″ model for just $120

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s Fire TV sale might not cover popular devices like the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K, but several best-selling Fire TV Edition televisions are down to their lowest prices of the year.
  • A 50-inch Inisgnia 4K TV with Fire TV software is $50 off today, and an even more popular 32-inch model from Insignia is just $119.99.
  • If you would rather get a TV with Roku’s user interface instead of Amazon’s Fire TV software, there’s also a great deal on a 4K TV that comes with Roku preinstalled.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

You know as well as I do that a “smart TV” isn’t really a smart TV most of the time. Sure, TVs from Samsung, Sony, LG, and others can run apps. And sure, they’re fine if all you want to do is stream movies and shows on Netflix. The simple fact of the matter, however, is that no TV maker will ever support all the apps and games you want on your TV. That means regardless of whether or not you buy a “smart TV,” you’ll need to make it even smarter by adding a streaming media player like a Fire TV Stick, Roku device, or an Apple TV.

Now, there is one important exception. Some vendors sell televisions that ditch the proprietary platforms and instead have Fire TV software or Roku software built right in. That’s pretty much the only time you’ll get away with not having to buy a separate streaming media player. And right now, several of the best options out there that have Fire TV software or Roku software preinstalled are on sale at their lowest prices of 2020. In fact, the two Fire TV Edition televisions we’re going to tell you about have been discounted all week, but they both just got even deeper discounts this morning!

First and foremost, the Insignia NS-32DF310NA19 32-inch Smart HD TV – Fire TV Edition is the single best-selling television on Amazon’s entire site. It’s perfect for a guest bedroom, the kitchen, or any other space where you need a compact TV. This model retails for $170 but right now you can pick one up for just $119.99.

Insignia NS-32DF310NA19 32-inch Smart HD TV – Fire TV Edition: $119.99

If you need something a bit larger for your living room, the basement, or your master bedroom, it doesn’t get much better than the Insignia NS-50DF711SE21 50-inch Smart 4K UHD TV – Fire TV Edition. It has a stunning display, 4K resolution, and it’s on sale for $299.99 right now instead of $350.

Insignia NS-50DF711SE21 50-inch Smart 4K UHD TV – Fire TV Edition – Limited Version: $299.99

Last but certainly not least, the $330 TCL 43S425 43 Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart Roku LED TV is on sale today for only $229.99. It’s sized right between the other two and it runs Roku software instead of Fire TV. Also of note, the 55-inch model is on sale for $299.99 and while it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you’ll find on the Toshiba model above, it’s a great value at that price.

TCL 43S425 43 Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart Roku LED TV (2018): $229.99

How to track the coronavirus stimulus check you still haven’t received

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Millions of Americans are still checking each day for a coronavirus stimulus check update, hoping to receive their direct payment from the federal government soon.
  • The IRS has been sending out payments of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples, with an extra $500 per eligible child, during the pandemic.
  • The US Postal Service has a feature that many people might not be aware of that lets taxpayers get a better sense of when their money will be delivered via the mail.

Many of the people likely to benefit the most from the coronavirus stimulus checks the federal government started sending out back in March are, unfortunately, still waiting to get their money that was supposed to help blunt some of the economic pain of the ongoing pandemic. Now that we’ve passed the IRS deadline for submitting your bank details for direct deposits, everyone who didn’t do so — which could be anyone from elderly taxpayers on fixed incomes to hourly workers whose time in front of a computer may be limited — is waiting on their check to arrive in paper form via the postal service, and is likely checking their stimulus check status daily in frustration. All the more so, when you consider the fact that lawmakers probably aren’t going to agree on a new round of stimulus checks anytime soon. This is it, in other words, for the foreseeable future.

But while it won’t help you get your check any faster, there is a neat solution for tracking it with a bit more specificity that most people probably aren’t using and may not even be aware of.
