Going into Star Wars Episode VIII we want to find out who Rey’s parents are more than anything else. But we’re also interested to see if there’s going to be any romance between some of the new characters introduced in the last film. After Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many speculated that Rey and Finn are the new Leia and Han, while some said that there may be a Finn-Poe romance in the works. J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars did not explore either of these potential romances, but Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII might bring us some answers.

At least, that’s what John Boyega teased in a fresh interview.

Video calling will be coming to WhatsApp sometime soon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Video calling has been the big capability missing from WhatsApp’s repertoire in the past, but it looks like that is all about to change. Over the weekend, a “Video Calling” option started popping up for beta testers, hinting that a full release of the feature is coming.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about video calling coming to WhatsApp. Last year, leaked screenshots showed the feature being tested in a version of the iOS app, and WhatsApp has also been requesting translations for the term “Video Calling,” indicating a worldwide rollout is anticipated for the app’s billion users.

Facebook is pushing its livestreaming video project pretty hard — so hard that it’s paying media companies cold hard cash to use Facebook Live. So when Buzzfeed set up an interview with President Obama using Facebook Live, it should have been a major coup for the platform. Instead, Facebook crashed, and YouTube had to save the day.

Buzzfeed’s legal editor was supposed to sit down with the President to discuss his Supreme Court nomination of Merrick Garland at 2.50PM ET this afternoon. Unfortunately, Facebook’s video tool had some technical problems, and users were stuck with one short loading video.

A closer look at why Apple just made a $1 billion investment in Uber’s Chinese rival

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple last week made a surprise announcement when it confirmed that it had made a $1 billion investment in Didi Chuxing, a ride sharing company in China that is often referred to as the Uber of China.

“We are making the investment for a number of strategic reasons,” Apple CEO Tim Cook explained, “including a chance to learn more about certain segments of the China market.”

Coy as ever, Cook’s somewhat cryptic remarks naturally led to an avalanche of speculation, particularly given rumors that Apple is developing its own electric car. Other commentators took the position that Apple’s investment was simply an old-fashioned way to curry favor with the Chinese government.

Did Tesla use cheap labor for factory expansion? Elon Musk promises to investigate

Tesla is moving at breakneck speeds these days. In fact, there’s so much on Tesla’s plate that it can sometimes be tough to keep track of everything the company is up to. Not only is the company working furiously to finish the Gigafactory so that it can defy the odds and deliver the Model 3 on time, but the sheer volume of Model 3 pre-orders (more than 400,000 at this point) is far beyond the company’s wildest expectations.

At the same time, Tesla is continuing to ramp up Model X production, and that’s not to even mentioning the recently revamped Model 3. Over the weekend, The Mercury News posted a troubling and fascinating expose into Tesla’s hiring practices at its Fremont, California factory, the location where both the Model S and the Model X are manufactured.

Waze is testing a ridesharing program to take on Uber

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Uber always calls its car-on-demand service “ridesharing,” mostly as a way to get around accusations of running an illegal taxi service. But what if an app that knew millions of people’s destinations started offering actual rideshares for cheap? Enter Google, via its insanely popular navigation app Waze.

Waze Carpool is brutally simple: anyone who wants a ride opens up the Waze Riders app (currently in an invite-only beta). They plug in their destination, and are then matched with any regular Waze user who is already going in that direction. Unlike Uber or Lyft, drivers don’t take requests — the app is the digital equivalent of carpooling to work with colleagues, not taking a taxi.
