This is what a sunrise on Mars sounds like, according to a computer algorithm

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Scientists know a lot about Mars, at least when it comes to what it looks like. Sound, on the other hand, is a lot more challenging, and it’s not like we have high-powered microphones listening to the wind sweep across the Martian plains.

Now, researchers from Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Exeter have created an interesting piece of music that wasn’t just inspired by Mars, but was actually composed by a computer algorithm using a Mars sunrise as data. The result is a surprisingly pleasing piece of music, and you can listen to it yourself.

This Samsung exec wants gadgets to start talking to us like friends right out of the box

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It sounds incredibly dystopian, and like a nod to Spike Jonze’s 2013 movie Her, but Viv Labs CEO Dag Kittlaus shared his quirky-sounding vision for the future of gadgets and machines during a discussion this week as part of the Samsung Developer Conference. One day, he imagines, you’re going to make a tech purchase of some kind, take it home, pull it out of the box, plug it in — and it’s just going to start talking to you. Politely, like a friend, in a kind of high-tech superseding of the days when you had to navigate start menus and read instructions. It will just know who you are, what you like (thanks to pre-loaded data), and will ask you what you want to do next.

Google isn’t yet ready to repair your Pixel 3’s broken screen

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After so many years of building its own phones, Google still struggles with some of the inherent problems that come with making hardware. The days when you couldn’t find a Pixel in stores are long gone, but that doesn’t mean Google has been able to sell boatloads of Pixel phones since launching the first model.

Nevertheless, Google just launched a new generation of devices in more markets than ever, but the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were plagued by various issues when they came out that Google will fix via software updates . But if you happen to drop the brand new phone, which can cost north of $900, you’re on your own. Google can’t help you, and the same goes for any repair shops that are trained to replace the damaged glass.

Disney is actually building two Netflix rivals – its own service, plus a much bigger Hulu

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There have been a ton of headlines over the last day or so about Disney’s new streaming service, which will launch next year and host everything from Star Wars and Marvel movies to spin-off TV series that features characters from those entertainment franchises and more. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger on a conference call earlier this week finally revealed the name of Disney’s video streaming service — Disney+, as well as the fact it will go live about a year from now.

This sets up 2019 to be a super interesting year as far as streaming content providers go, with Netflix perhaps finally having its hands full warding off its strongest competition yet once Disney’s service is up and running.

You honestly won’t believe how much someone paid for Stephen Hawking’s wheelchair

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Late last month, I wrote about an auction for a whole bunch of very cool items once owned by Stephen Hawking. There was a classic bomber jacket, his official script when he made an appearance on The Simpsons, and even some of the medals and awards he won during his incredible science career.

There was also an old wheelchair which the famous thinker used between the late 1980s and mid ’90s. It was a somewhat odd item, if only because it was the only thing on the auction block that related to Hawking’s disability rather than his scientific work, but it still managed to fetch an absolutely astronomical price.

T-Mobile has blocked one billion spam calls in the last 18 months

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’ve told you in the past about estimates suggesting that your cell phone is going to be bombarded with a ton more spam calls next year. Estimates vary, but the increase is forecasted to mean around half, and maybe more, of all mobile traffic in 2019 will be attributable to such calls.

That’s not to say preparations aren’t being made to fight them. Indeed, T-Mobile today has touted its record over the last 18 months of having blocked 1 billion such spam calls to its customers’ phones, and that its Scam ID and Scam Block technology has helped the so-called Un-carrier flag more than 6 billion calls as “likely” spam.
