Early Instagram employee: The app is like ‘a drug that doesn’t get us high anymore’

The day after she learned that Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger were abruptly leaving the company, Bailey Richardson decided the time had come.

Like almost 70 percent of Americans who’ve ever ditched or taken a break from social media (according to Pew Research Center data) she’d become disillusioned with Instagram — the posing, the status seeking, and her own general lack of feeling good when using it. Writing to her 20,000 followers on the service in one final post, she noted simply that the time had come to say goodbye, and “Thanks for all the kindnesses over the years.”

Astronomers may have just spotted a ‘super Earth,’ and it’s not far away

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Lately, a lot of the exoplanets discovered by astronomers have been incredibly far away. Spotting planets at a huge distance is still important, and every new planet researchers are able to detect adds to our knowledge of the universe and nature itself, but most of them are so distant that we’ll likely never actually visit them.

A recent almost-discovery of so-called “super Earth” could change that. Astronomers have spotted what they believe is evidence of a massive, rocky world over three times the size of Earth, but the most exciting thing about it is that it’s only around six light years away.

Global smart speaker shipments hit an all-time high, with Amazon in the lead

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The US saw a bit of a cool down in the third quarter when it comes to the shipment of smart speakers like Amazon’s popular Alexa-powered devices. But new data out from Strategy Analytics tells a different story — or, rather, adds another dimension to the smart speaker market picture. Outside the US, smart speaker shipments are actually red-hot at the moment. Indeed, global shipments hit a record high in the third quarter, putting the market on track to top 100 million units in use by the end of this year.

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Two months after its official return as a brand, the French consumer electronics company Withings is continuing what’s turned into something of an extended comeback. Nokia had acquired the company almost two years ago, but the company recently bought itself back and reintroduced itself to the public thanks to a new logo, website and stylish new product in the form of the Steel HR Sport, a hybrid smartwatch and fitness tracker.

And today, the company is announcing its second new device since moving ownership away from Nokia. It’s the Pulse HR, a water-resistant fitness tracker that comes with features like connected GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, smartphone notifications and 20-day battery life.

NASA is going to live stream the touchdown of its new Mars lander

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA has sent a number of high-tech robots to the Red Planet already, but we don’t normally hear about how things like entry and landing went until after the fact. That’s going to change with the entry of the InSight lander, which is scheduled to touch down on Mars on November 26th, because NASA is going to live stream the entire event for the world to watch.

No, the lander won’t actually be sending back live video of itself hurtling towards the Martian surface, but the space agency is going to have live commentary and video feeds from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s mission control so we can see the scientists and engineers doing their thing in real time.

Google Maps just turned into a messaging app with this new feature

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google Maps is in the midst of pulling off a pretty interesting evolution these days, going from being a simple navigational tool that helps you get from Point A to Point B and into the app equivalent of a Swiss Army knife.

It’s now packed with tons of features that include a Yelp-like ability to do some quick research on a restaurant as well as the ability to share your ETA with friends and family. And because Google very much wants you staying in the app as long as possible and using it to interact with businesses you’re trying to find, it’s also just become yet another messaging app.
