Microsoft discounts 500 Xbox One games by up to 75% for Black Friday
We’re just over a week out from Black Friday 2018, but if you’re an Xbox Live Gold subscriber, the deals start today. On Thursday, Microsoft kicked off its Black Friday Xbox One game deals a few days early for paying members, giving them a 4-day head start on hundreds of digital games that are on sale. But not only do Gold members gain access to the deals earlier than everyone else, they also get an additional 10% off the games.
As Xbox Live’s Major Nelson notes, you have two options if you aren’t current subscribers to Xbox Live Gold. The first is to just wait it out, as the Black Friday sale will open up to all Xbox One owners on November 19th. The other option is to join Xbox Live Gold right now, which you can do for just $1 for your first month.

Samsung is about to spend an insane amount of money on 5G and AI investments
Samsung’s appetite for attention-grabbing technology experiments like folding displays for tablets and smartphones has certainly garnered the South Korean-based tech giant tons of headlines over the past week or so. The company laid out its ambitions around that technology during its recent developer conference, with the plans including the launch of its much-anticipated foldable smartphone in March, starting with an initial production run of at least 1 million units.
Behind the scenes, meanwhile, Samsung is no less hungry to ramp up its efforts in other areas of technology it sees as potentially having a huge impact on its business down the line. Samsung has acknowledged its bet on foldable displays may ultimately not pan out, but the company over the next few years is also planning to spend a whopping $22 billion getting itself ready to be a leader in 5G and AI-related technology.

PlayStation will skip E3 2019, the first time it has ever missed the show
Sony has been a mainstay of E3 since the LA expo’s inception in 1995, but the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which runs E3, revealed in a press release on Thursday that PlayStation will miss out on the festivities for the first time ever in 2019. While developers and publishers have dropped out of E3 in years past, the disappearance of the biggest name in console gaming this generation will be a major blow to the show.
The foundation of E3 has shown signs of weakening in recent years, with publishers like EA moving their showcases off the show floor and attempting to reach fans through other means. Nintendo has also abandoned traditional press conferences in recent years, opting to stream pre-recorded videos online instead.

Google Maps wants to help you avoid traffic and crowds over Thanksgiving
Other than overeating and argument at the dinner table, the most frustrating part of Thanksgiving is the travel. You can’t go anywhere without being swarmed by traffic, whether you’re on foot, on the road, or in the airport. But Google is well aware of this frustration, which is why the search giant put together an interactive site examining search terms and traffic patterns to give travelers a cheat sheet of sorts to avoid big crowds.
Up first are the search trends, which show where people in each state are most likely to travel over the Thanksgiving weekend. In New York, they want to visit art centers and music venues. The Midwest will spend the holiday at home improvement stores. And the people of Alabama are going to watch the Alabama-Auburn game.

Google’s Pixel 3 deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday are finally here
Google a few days ago unveiled its Black Friday 2018 deals, featuring plenty of products that will be discounted on Black Friday, both in the Google online store and from various retail partners.
However, Google only shared sales for smart products for the home (think speakers, Chromecast, cameras, thermostats), and last year’s Pixelbook laptop. The newest and most exciting products were not included in Google’s initial Black Friday announcement, but Google is back with a few extra promotions dedicated to Pixel fans.

Ad exec says sooner or later, Netflix is going to have to embrace ads like YouTube
There are a few certainties in life we can all agree on. Death, taxes — and that a large swath of Netflix’s user base will always recoil in horror at the mere mention of advertising on the video streaming service.
Nevertheless, the CEO of online advertising marketplace The Trade Desk thinks that’s exactly what Netflix is going to have to embrace sooner or later if it’s ever going to have a real shot at going head-to-head with YouTube in terms of international growth. That exec, Jeff Green, gave his take on Netflix and ads during the latest episode of Recode Media with Peter Kafka, arguing that consumers are getting closer to the limit of how many subscriptions they’ll be willing and able to pay for. And, crucially, as that ceiling approaches, services would do well to remember that many consumers are perfectly fine with the trade-off of accepting ads in order to keep their service free.
