Crazy next-gen accessory lets you wirelessly charge an Echo Dot from across the room

A lot of “wireless” tech inside practically any smart device that’s currently available in stores, but there’s still one magical wireless feature that’s still not widely available. We connect wirelessly to Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Bluetooth and NFC are also wireless technologies that allow us to transmit information across short distances. And we can recharge devices wirelessly, as long as we place them on wireless-charging surfaces that are hooked up to a power outlet via a wire. True, long-distance, wireless charging is the next big thing that we expect from device makers, something that will forever fix battery life worries. It may be a while until an iPhone’s battery can be recharged wirelessly from across the room, but the time has come to do that with other devices that you might be more than familiar with, including Amazon’s Echo Dot and Google’s Home Mini smart speakers.

Samsung teases its exciting all-screen Galaxy S10 design again

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung is supposed to launch three Galaxy S10-branded phones early next year, and at least two of them are now expected to feature a design that’s not available on any other phone. Samsung teased the all-screen notchless display a few days before unveiling several types of Infinity display screens, including the foldable version, at SDC18 last week. Before and after the event, a slew of reports kept saying that the premium Galaxy S10 phones will feature a screen that will occupy almost the entire surface of the front side, save for a circular hole at the top, where the camera would reside.

Facebook might use your photos to target your entire family with ads

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Facebook is getting slammed from all sides at the moment. Over the past 24 hours or so, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff compared the company’s negative side with the addictive potential of cigarettes. We learned that Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments about privacy have rankled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for years. And a massive New York Times investigation has cast Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in a supremely negative light.

But when you’re the biggest social network on the planet, the show must go on — and, indeed, a new patent shows Facebook may be about to take its data mining capabilities to a new level.

A new meteorite impact crater was just found hiding under Greenland ice

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We might not know a whole lot about what’s going on inside Mars, the Moon, or even the deepest reaches of Earth’s oceans, but scientists have a pretty clear picture of the Earth’s surface. Or at least they thought they did. A new discovery in Greenland could help to rewrite some recent Earth history, and it’s all thanks to ice.

Using new, more powerful radar technology to examine what’s hiding beneath Greenland’s massive ice sheet, a team of researchers from around the world just made an incredible discovery. There, hidden under the ice, is a massive impact crater that was just waiting to be found.

Even British royals are now criticizing tech giants like Facebook for dodgy practices

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Britain’s Duke of Cambridge has launched a full-throated attack on US tech giants like Facebook, Twitter and Google in a speech at the BBC, an outgrowth of his leadership of a task force aimed at fighting back against cyberbullying.

In his speech, Prince William lamented that over-attention to profits and business concerns is outweighing meaningful change on platforms like Facebook, which was also the focus of a major New York Times investigative piece that rocked media circles this week. The result of six months of work, the paper painted a picture of a slow-moving tech giant encumbered by inaction at the top, with leaders more focused on how to manage the crises of fake news and privacy issues than actually solving the problems.

Sam’s Club last week hosted a special one-day early Black Friday sale, and we already know what the retailer has planned for the main shopping event of the holiday season. But, with more than a week to go until Black Friday deals arrive, Sam’s Club has one more trick up its sleeve: A special two-day sale that only covers Samsung gear. That means this year’s Galaxy Note 9 and S9 flagships, as well as plenty of Samsung TVs are getting hefty discounts.

The sale event starts on November 16th and ends on November 18th, so you have plenty of time to check out the deals and make up your mind. The discounted items will be available both in store and online.

NASA spots a distant galaxy that is actually sucking up other galaxies

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When NASA sets its sights on a far-away galaxy, there’s often a lot to take in. Even if it only appears to be a dim blob, researchers can often combine various observations to determine the galaxy’s size and shape. Normally, they’re just there, sitting in space, creating new stars and doing the other things that galaxies do. But a recent snapshot of a galaxy known as WISE J224607.55-052634.9 is special.

Originally discovered a few years ago, new observations of the galaxy by Chile’s ALMA array show that the galaxy is actually eating its neighbors. From our vantage point, the galaxy is tearing apart a total of three smaller galaxies, yanking material off of them with its gravitational pull.

Sony reveals ‘Black Ops 4’ PS4 bundle in honor of the console’s fifth birthday

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Sony has been busier than ever this year, cranking out several critically acclaimed titles for its PlayStation 4 console, which has just passed the five-year mark — and racked up some impressive statistics along the way.

In honor of the console’s fifth anniversary, Sony has revealed that it’s sold more than 86 million units of the popular gaming system to date, along with almost 778 million software units worldwide. Both figures, we should point out, are current through September, so those have no doubt climbed in the two months since.

By way of putting more of the console’s history into context, Sony says it’s also pushed out 11 major software updates to the PS4 since its launch back in 2013. And to top it off, the gaming giant is releasing a special console bundle later this month in honor of the milestone.

Galaxy S10 will reportedly have the smartphone design we’ve always wanted

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 is still several months away, but the flagship keeps appearing in leaks and reports, suggesting that the launch is indeed nearing. The latest story out of Korea says something we’ve come to suspect for a while now — that the Galaxy S10 will have the kind of design we’ve always dreamed about.

In previous weeks, we saw Samsung tease and announce an Infinity-O display that’s now believed to be the screen of the Galaxy S10: A display that extends from edge to edge, featuring only a tiny hole at the top for the selfie camera. Other leakers also mentioned the new screen design coming to the Galaxy S10 series.
