An AI developer is building a HAL-9000-inspired system for space stations
Artificial intelligence has come a long way in the past decade or so, but one of the scariest portrayals of how AI could ultimate doom us was created way back in the late 1960s. HAL-9000, the nefarious AI from 2001: A Space Odyssey, saw human life as expendable in the shadow of its mission objectives. Now, an AI developer, inspired by HAL-9000, is building a real-life automated system for future space missions.
Yeah, this is usually the part where I say how bad of an idea this sounds but, as with so many science fiction tropes that fall apart in the real world, we probably don’t have any reason to fear this new artificial mind. Hopefully.

Apple to lower iPhone XR pricing in Japan in order to kickstart sales
Historically speaking, speculative reports regarding cuts in iPhone production due to low demand are nothing new. And as you might expect, some of these reports in certain years have ultimately proven to be accurate while others, with the benefit of hindsight, appear to have been sourced from folks intent on manipulating the market.
That qualification aside, the number of reports regarding lower than expected demand for Apple’s iPhone XR has become somewhat impossible to ignore. Most recently, Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn said that it plans to implement sweeping cost-saving measures in order to combat “a very difficult and competitive year.” Predictably, many people interpreted Foxconn’s comments as a clear indication that iPhone sales are slumping.

MIT’s magic plane flies without fuel or moving parts
Air travel is the safest, speediest way to get from one place to another, but you know what would make it even better? If planes didn’t have to worry about pesky engines and messy fuel. I mean, if a plane could just go we’d all be better off, right? Well leave it to MIT to come up with a solution.
A new paper by researchers from the institute describes how they managed to build a plane that flies without a traditional propulsion system. The concept model, which weights just over five pounds, relies on what is known as electroaerodynamic propulsion to generate wind, and thereby lift, while also pushing the vehicle forward. It’s like magic, only it’s science.

Black Friday 2018: These are the best Retina MacBook Air deals
Black Friday is almost upon us, which means many of the sales you’ve been waiting for have either gone live online or will be live soon. As always, Apple’s newest products will be on many holiday lists, but not all of these products will receive significant discounts from Apple. The company will offer a variety of gift cards to customers who shop online and in its stores, depending on what products they purchase, but the sale doesn’t cover 2018 products.
Other retailers, meanwhile, host much better discounts than Apple on the iPhone, Watch, iPad, and Mac. But the Retina MacBook Air that was launched a few weeks ago isn’t included in many sales. That said, we do have for you a couple of deals that will help you save some cash on Apple’s newest Air.
