Alexa is teaching itself to get better at understanding what you mean
One of the drawbacks of relying on a voice-based digital assistant like Alexa is you may be interacting with it without the benefit of a screen or some kind of visual element. Meaning, much of the interaction may be dependent on your memory of what the assistant’s software can actually do — and the commands required to execute those capabilities. That said, a few new skills for Amazon’s Alexa are rolling out today in the US that are intended to help Alexa slowly get better at understanding what you mean when you talk to her.
More specifically, thanks to machine learning in the background, Alexa is increasingly able to teach herself to get better at understanding what you’re really trying to say.

NASA is using a 1909 penny to learn more about seasons on Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover is a powerful machine with some impressive capabilities when it comes to analyzing material samples, drilling into Martian rocks, and snapping images of the planet’s surface. Despite all that, an incredibly low-tech feature on the rover is helping NASA understand Mars’ seasons and, in particular, how hard the wind blows.
The planet-wide dust storm that dominated Mars this year caked everything in a layer of dust, but it was followed by the planet’s windiest season. Now, new images from Curiosity’s calibration test show just how hard that wind is blowing, and it’s all thanks to a coin that’s over 100 years old.

Amazon wants to bring its checkout-free stores to US airports
Amazon is considering expanding its cashier-less, checkout-free Amazon Go stores to airports, according to a new report from Reuters this week. The first Amazon Go store opened to the public in January 2018, and since then, six more stores have opened in Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco. We actually had the chance to shop in one of the Chicago locations in the fall, in case you want to know what it’s like to be inside an Amazon Go.
Reuters discovered the company’s plans to move into airports via public records requests to multiple airports, which turned up emails in which Amazon discussed the possibility of adding its futuristic stores to the lineup of shops and restaurants on the concourse. It doesn’t appear that the process is very far along yet though.

NASA’s new Mars robot just sent back some awesome photos
It was just a couple of weeks ago that NASA’s shiny new InSight lander successfully touched down on the Red Planet, sending cheers throughout NASA and the scientific community as a whole. The robot has a lot of work ahead of it, but things always start slowly when you’re handling a machine remotely from another planet.
This week, InSight began testing out its robotic arm that will place a variety of instruments on the ground around it. Those instruments will listen to the inner workings of the planet and provide data for researchers hoping to learn more about what’s hidden deep underground. That’ll happen sooner rather than later, but at the moment NASA is teasing us all with some of the best images of the Martian landscape we’ve ever seen.
