Doctors are now facing prison time and huge fines for illegal opioid prescriptions
It’s no secret that the US is in the midst of an opioid crisis. Addiction statistics and overdose rates have climbed so high that they’re actually beginning to affect overall life expectancy for US citizens, leaving health officials scrambling to manage the huge number of opioid prescriptions that are handed out from coast to coast.
Now, in what might be the start of a trend, two doctors in separate cases are facing real consequences for handing out prescription opioids to people who definitely shouldn’t have had access to them.

After kicking Qualcomm to the curb, Apple is now busy designing its own cellular modems
Apple is a company that likes control, which is why the company has long preferred to own all of the underlying technologies that go into its products. This approach is what compelled Apple to start designing its own processors for the iPhone. Further, Apple’s appetite for control is why rumors that the company may ultimately do away with Intel processors on the Mac should be taken seriously.
In light of that, a wild new report from The Information relays that Apple has been busy working on developing its own cellular modem technology for future iterations of the iPhone. Interestingly, Apple’s work in this area reportedly can be traced back to the company’s ongoing legal dispute with Qualcomm over iPhone royalty payments. Incidentally, Apple has since dropped Qualcomm as a modem supplier and now relies on Intel for its cellular modems needs.

Leaving Netflix in January 2019: Every movie and TV show being removed
New Year’s Day is all about beginnings and endings. We put all of our successes and failures from the previous year behind us and do our best to start fresh. And Netflix sorta does the same thing (though it happens every month), with a full slate of new releases and a pool of shows and movies that didn’t quite make the cut.
January is going to be another one of those months where the number of removals isn’t all that distressing, but many of the movies and shows being removed are so incredibly popular that there are sure to be more than a few bummed subscribers browsing through Netflix early next year. Some of the biggest removals include The Godfather, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Fellowship of the Ring, and the beloved Friday Night Lights.

Bloomberg: Apple could move iPhone production out of China if trade war escalates
Apple suppliers are reportedly considering moving iPhone production out of China if US tariffs on smartphone imports hit 25%, although the current production model will stay in place if the US levies only a 10% tariff on handsets. People familiar with the discussions tell Bloomberg that Apple plans to “sit tight” for the moment.
The iPhone is assembled primarily in China, and various parts suppliers are also based in the region. While giants like Foxconn and Pegatron manufacture various iPhone models, the actual parts needed for assembly come from hundreds of suppliers, many based in China. Moving the entire supply chain out of China would be a daunting task. The report says that an Apple supplier suggested alternative locations for non-iPhone production, but Apple has indicated there’s little need to make such a move for now.

Every free NES game added to Nintendo Switch Online in December, and two surprises
Nintendo had a somewhat slow year in terms of major first-party releases for the Switch (save for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokemon: Let’s Go). But one new feature that helped buoy the console’s lineup was the free selection of classic NES games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The service launched with 20 NES games in September, and has added three games every month since, including three new games this Wednesday.
In addition to those free games, Nintendo has also been sneaking in a few extra surprises in recent months — save data for some of the previously added NES games that typically lets players start deep into a game or with a bunch of equipment already unlocked. Two more of these SP titles were added in December as well.
