MIT invented a way to build nano-scale versions of larger objects

In science fiction, “shrink rays” are the easiest way to turn a large object into something much, much smaller, but here in reality things aren’t that simple. Creating so-called “nano-scale” versions of objects is a difficult task that researchers at MIT aimed to make a bit easier, and the result is a new system that allows scientists to effectively shrink three-dimensional structures to one thousandth their original size.

In creating this new system, MIT professor Edward Boyden and his students started with a technique that is actually used to make things bigger. It’s called expansion microscopy, and it’s used to increase the size of cells and tissues by embedding the biological material with a polymer gel that causes it to grow in size.

Water-resistant iPhone saves lives when group is forced to abandon capsized boat

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

You’ll never realize how important it is to have a water-resistant smartphone on you until you have to use one to call for help while you’re treading water. That’s what happened to a group of friends visiting Japan recently after their boat capsized in rough seas. A water-resistant iPhone allowed them to call the local emergency number and have the coast guard save them.

The list of the highest grossing iOS apps in 2018 might surprise you

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you had to guess 5 out of 10 of the highest grossing iOS apps on the App Store in 2018, there’s a good chance you would fail miserably. While-widely known apps like Candy Crush certainly rake in money hand over fist, the most lucrative iOS apps aren’t necessarily well-known outside of certain countries.

To this point, a new research report from Sensor Tower (via Business Insider) reveals which iOS apps in 2018 managed to generate the most in revenue. Standing atop of the list is Netflix, an app which Sensor Tower claims to have generated $790.2 million in revenue over the past 12 months on the App Store alone. Netflix rival Hulu, meanwhile, occupies the 10th spot after generating $132.6 million in revenue in 2018.

Breathing in Moon dust could kill you

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Dreams of a lunar colony where people walk around on the dusty surface inside of big domes will remain a dream for a while longer. We might eventually reach a point where humans could feasibly create comfortable living conditions on Earth’s Moon, but new research suggests that the material covering our nearest neighbor is actually toxic to humans.

Thanks to the Apollo missions, scientists on Earth have samples of lunar dust that they can test, and a new research effort discovered that the pale powder is packed with compounds that react with human cells. As New Scientist reports, the minerals prompt the formation of hydroxyl radicals which are thought to promote lung cancer.

How to check if your private photos were exposed due to Facebook’s latest bug

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Facebook had to acknowledge another security issue late last week which impacted up to 6.8 million users. The bug exposed private photos, Facebook explained, allowing apps to access content that users hadn’t shared.

Facebook has fixed the issue and said it planned to issue a tool for app developers to determine which of their customers might have been impacted by the bug. But the good news is that you can also manually check to see if your photos have been exposed to app developers without your knowledge.

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S10 will not boast a quad-camera scheme after all

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you thought Apple had a tough time keeping iPhone rumors at bay, Samsung at this point seems to have given up. Every year, it seems that all the key features of Samsung’s new flagship devices are leaked weeks, if not months, in advance. Not that we’re complaining, of course, as it’s always fun to see what new features are lurking right around the corner. The upcoming refresh cycle for Samsung’s Galaxy line is no different as we’ve already seen an avalanche of S10 rumors roll in over the past few weeks.

Amid reports that Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup will consist of four distinct devices, including one with 5G support, one of the more intriguing rumors we came across suggested that the Galaxy S10+ model would boast a quad-camera scheme. That little tidbit certainly got some folks excited but a new report from PhoneArena reveals that that likely won’t be the case. In other words, if you’re planning to upgrade to a new Samsung device next year, the Galaxy S10+ will reportedly incorporate a triple-camera scheme on the back.

OnePlus 7 concept shows off one of 2019’s most anticipated Android phones

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

While we don’t expect 2019’s slate of Android flagships to look drastically different than those we saw this year, the slow march toward the total elimination of bezels will inevitably continue. Just last month, Samsung gave us a glimpse into the future during its developer conference by showing off a variety of display designs that would soon pervade its lineup, each of which either shrink or remove the bezel of the phone altogether.

Other phone makers are undoubtedly working on their own solutions, and over the weekend, prolific concept designer Waqar Khan shared his latest creation: An early look at the OnePlus 7. While many concepts push the limits of logic, Khan’s concept actually seems like an attainable goal for the Chinese company.

Apple’s Face ID wipes the floor with Android’s facial recognition

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The launch of Face ID on the iPhone X last year was accompanied by a little bit of skepticism. And with good reason: Touch ID at the time had advanced to such a point that some people questioned if Face ID could possibly offer up a superior user experience. Shortly after the release of the iPhone X, however, it wasn’t long before users started expressing a preference for Face ID over Touch ID. Flash forward to 2018 and all three of Apple’s 2018 iPhone models now boast the company’s face recognition technology.

Of course, wherever Apple goes Android handset manufacturers are sure to follow. With that said, there are any number of Android devices out there with their own implementations of facial recognition technology, with some naturally offering up a more robust authentication scheme than others. And sure, Apple may not have been the first company to roll out face recognition technology, but what matters most is which implementation is the most secure and reliable.

iOS 12.1.2 now available to download on iPhone and iPad

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Less than two weeks after the last significant iOS 12 update — one which brought a wide variety of new features and changes to the platform — Apple has returned with a smaller (but no less necessary) update.

On Monday, Apple shared iOS 12.1.2, which addresses a bug relating to eSIM activation on the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, though there haven’t been any reports about eSIM issues to our knowledge. The update also includes a fix for “an issue that could affect cellular connectivity in Turkey” for all three 2018 iPhone models.
