Google Assistant might come to Samsung TVs in 2019
CES is just around the corner — not that you need to remind tech journalists who are already seeing their email inboxes fill up with cheery missives from PR folks sending some variant of the same message: “Just checking to see if you’ve got time to meet with my client at CES in a few weeks.”
That said, we’re also already starting to get a sense of some of the highlights and announcements that will likely be on tap next month, including the possibility that Samsung may choose the annual tech industry confab as an opportunity to announce a big partnership with Google when the tech giant unveils its 2019 TV models.

Nike’s self-lacing shoes are back, and you might actually be able to afford them
We’ve been waiting for years for shoemakers to develop the kind of self-lacing footwear that once only seemed possible in movies, but it turns out that making smart shoes isn’t all that easy.
Nike is one of the companies that has created such models in the past, including one for Marty McFly. But, at $720, the regular pair of self-lacing Nike sneakers cost as much as a high-end smartphone. However, Nike has figured out a way to make them a lot more affordable, and next year you might finally find a pair you can afford in stores.

The Mars InSight robot just placed its first instrument on Mars’ surface
NASA’s Mars InSight mission is moving along at a rapid pace. After landing on the planet just a few weeks ago, InSight has spent its days observing its new living space and sending back photos of the ground surrounding it.
NASA’s InSight team has been practicing the tricky task of placing the robot’s sensitive instruments on the surface. Now, with a couple of years of observation and data gathering ahead of it, the bot has successfully deployed the first of its sensor suite, and NASA is very happy with how well things are progressing.

Anthropologie dared to charge $42 for a bundle of sticks… and they sold out
Ah, the holiday season is upon us! It’s that time of year where some families will be eating elaborate meals together alongside a crackling fireplace while others will be avoiding one another entirely. All the while, presents will be exchanged, festive drinks will be imbibed, and Home Alone will inevitably be playing on repeat.
The holiday season, though, isn’t only for individuals to enjoy. It’s also a time of great excitement for friendly corporations who can’t help but convince you — yes you, the reader — that your life would be so much better if you purchased something you didn’t even know you needed just a few weeks ago. Case in point: Anthropologie — a popular woman’s boutique — recently started selling a bundle of twigs — which it calls a decorative birch bundle — for upwards of $50. Sure, you’ve heard of twigs before. And sure, perhaps you’ve even stepped on one or two in the past. But have you ever had the capitalistic privilege of buying a bundle of twigs online?

Apple executive responds to complaints about bent iPad Pro units
Over the last few days, some iPad Pro owners have taken to the web to complain about subtle but noticeable bends in their iPad Pros. Of course, it goes without saying that if you spend a minimum of $800 on a brand new tablet, the last thing you want to see is an aesthetic imperfection.
Apple earlier this week confirmed that some iPad Pros will exhibit a slight bend, while also emphasizing that the bend is simply a normal part of the manufacturing process and that it will not get worse with time. Put simply, Apple doesn’t consider iPad Pro units with a slight bend to be defective.

‘Aquaman’ opens in the US this weekend, but has already made a killing overseas
DC’s newest superhero flick Aquaman has already made a big … impact at the box office. (You thought we were going to say splash, didn’t you, since everyone writing about this movie can’t seem to resist the urge to produce an assortment of oceanic puns?) Indeed, the film’s US opening weekend has only just now arrived, with the flick having already seen overseas success to such a degree that it’s helped recoup the film’s estimated $160 million production budget, and then some.
Not bad for a film that comes on the heels of the middling Justice League, which may be one reason the studio decided to release Aquaman in an unusual way. That included showing it in China first, in addition to inking a deal with Amazon to let the ecommerce company’s Prime subscribers get access to exclusive early showings in the US.
