Instagram accidentally updated its app with an awful new feature that everyone hated

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In what has to be in the running for the most baffling move by a social media platform in 2018 (though Facebook has that award locked up already), Instagram began rolling out a new feed for some users this week which forced them to scroll through their friends’ photos horizontally rather than vertically.

Instagram first began testing this feature in October, but at the time, it was restricted to the Explore tab. In that section of the app, it made a certain amount of sense — after all, you are just poking around, checking out random posts from strangers anyway. But on Thursday, some users began seeing a horizontal feed as soon as they opened the app. In effect, the entire feed turned into a Story, with tap controls as well as a progress bar up top.

Amazon just announced its best-selling tech gifts of the holidays – and they’re all still on sale

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Amazon on Wednesday announced that this past holiday shopping season was its most successful season ever, with more items ordered worldwide than ever before. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering how good the deals were this year across all of the most popular categories on Amazon’s site. Amazon didn’t share any specific numbers as far as sales go, and that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since the company never shares specific sales volumes. It did announce some of its best-selling products across various categories though, and we’ve got some awesome news: Amazon’s best-selling products from this past holiday shopping season are still on sale right now.

Fire TV and Echo devices were popular this year, as they have been every year. Amazon also listed best-sellers from other categories like toys, where products like the L.O.L. Surprise! In the ever popular electronics category, six items topped the list and it just so happens that they’re all still on sale!

The Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones were top-sellers this year, and they’re still available right now for $50 off, which is the same exact deal we saw on Black Friday and during Cyber Week. Samsung’s UN65NU8000FXZA Flat 65″ 4K UHD 8 Series Smart LED TV is also still on sale for more than $500 off, and Apple’s Space Gray iPad with 32GB of storage is still discounted as well, though it’s not as deep as it was during Cyber Week. New ‘Avengers: Endgame’ toy leak actually revealed some spoilers

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As hard as Marvel and Disney might try to prevent Avengers: Endgame spoilers from leaking, it’s impossible to prevent at least some details from escaping. And some of these spoilers come from the most unexpected places, like that Audi promo clip featuring Robert Downey Jr. that was released on the same day as the first Avengers 4 trailer. We also saw a new Lego minifig for the upcoming Infinity War sequel leak a few days ago, and now we have more toy leaks for you that contain potential spoilers for both Endgame as well as the first Marvel movie from MCU Phase 4 — that’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.

We’ve been talking about Fuchsia for a couple of years now, as various reports uncovered many details about Google’s mysterious operating system that will one day replace Android and Chrome on smartphones, tablets, computers, and more. Reports detailed Google’s plans for Fuchsia and we even got to see early concepts for the user interface of the upcoming operating system, including demo versions that could be booted on top of existing Android devices. However, that’s no longer the case. Google has removed access to Fuchsia’s UI as it develops at least three alternatives internally, and it’s now all happening behind closed doors.

Amazon’s surprise discounts on the Apple Watch Series 3 and 4 are still available today

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Amazon manages to surprise us around Christmastime each and every year, and in 2018 it was no different. The nation’s top online retailer offered several bigger-than-normal discounts on Apple products, which is a big deal since new Apple devices rarely go on sale. Some of those deals, like this discount on the current-generation iPad, are even still available now despite the fact that Christmas is over. You can still save on more than just iPads, though.

There weren’t many notable deals on the Apple Watch on Amazon during Black Friday and Cyber Week, but the company surprised us earlier this week when it slashed the prices of the Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple’s new Apple Watch Series 4. If you were busy running around and you missed those deals, we have good news: they’re still available now! Amazon is offering a sizeable $50 discount on the Apple Watch Series 3 with GPS + Cellular, and the deal is good on either the black sport band or the white one. The discount on the Apple Watch Series 4 isn’t quite as sizeable, but Series 4 sales are quite rare so it’s still better than paying $429 plus tax to Apple.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS, 44mm)

  • GPS
  • Over 30% larger display and 50% louder speaker
  • Electrical and optical heart sensors
  • Digital Crown with haptic feedback
  • S4 SiP with faster 64-bit dual-core processor
  • Improved accelerometer and gyroscope for fall detection
  • Swimproof

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS, 44mm) – Silver Aluminium Case with White Sport Band: $414.99

WARNING: A scam app claiming to set up Amazon’s Alexa infiltrated Apple’s App Store and is now the #6 utility

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple’s iOS App Store paved the way for other modern mobile app stores. Prior to the App Store’s introduction in 2008 alongside the iPhone 3G, smartphone users who wanted to install apps on their phones had to do so through third-party app repositories on a computer. Those apps then needed to be synchronized to the phone from a computer, believe it or not. It was a huge pain and it seems like a lifetime ago, but we might still be using this method if not for Apple.

Now, app stores are the norm. Each mobile and desktop platform has its own first-party app store, and there are also third-party app stores like Amazon’s. They’re all fairly similar at this point, but Apple’s iOS App Store still has one big advantage over all the rest. Because Apple employs such strict oversight, it’s much better than any other company at weeding out malware and other malicious apps. Of course, some nefarious apps still manage to sneak through from time to time, and one such example infiltrated the App Store over the Christmas holiday. Incredibly, it’s still there and has now become the #6 app in the utilities category.
