Scientists think they know where the early universe’s dark matter has been hiding
Most of the mass in the universe is made up of a kind of matter that none of us have ever seen. It’s called “dark matter” and, despite being incredibly abundant, it’s also extremely difficult to study. Decades-old calculations suggested that there is more dark matter around younger galaxies than the ancient ones from the early days of the universe, but then where did the dark matter we see today come from? A new study offers the answer.
Past research suggested that galaxies we see nearby have more dark matter than those that are very distant. The farther away a galaxy is the farther back in time we’re effectively looking, and scientists believed that those ancient galaxies didn’t have all that much dark matter around them. As it turns out, that isn’t the case.

Samsung tipped to launch Galaxy Fold foldable smartphone in Europe this year
Samsung unveiled its first foldable smartphone back in early November, during its yearly developer conference, but didn’t tell us what it would be called. Samsung left plenty of details out of the event, focusing on the new Infinity Flex screen technology, as well as the One UI user interface that will power the handset. The main specs were also kept secret, and the phone was shown in a protective case that made it look rather bulky.
Samsung also failed to tell us how much it’ll cost or when it’ll launch. But the phone, usually referred to as Galaxy F in rumors and reports, is expected to drop in the first half of 2019. A new report says that Samsung will bring the Galaxy Fold to various European countries, suggesting it will test out the new form factor in several markets this year.

FCC filing reveals new Sonos smart speaker may be coming soon
A redacted Federal Communications Commission filing published on Monday has offered up some juicy news for audiophiles. Smart speaker maker Sonos is apparently working on a new smart speaker product that would bring surround sound and voice control to its Playbar soundbars.
The news, which Sonos has so far resisted confirming, was first reported by Variety, which noted that the new Sonos product with the model number S18 will sport WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and is meant to work as a wireless smart speaker in tandem with the Playbar serving as a “master device.”

Apple lowers revenue guidance citing weak iPhone sales in China
Shares of Apple have been in a slump the past few months and a new letter from Tim Cook will likely make things worse. In a letter to investors released this afternoon, Cook relayed that Apple was revising its revenue guidance for the typically busy holiday quarter. Apple now anticipates quarterly revenue to check in at $84 billion, a bit lower than what the company projected during its recent earnings report a few weeks ago.
As to the reason behind the revised guidance, it can all — not surprisingly — be traced back to weaker than expected iPhone sales. Interestingly, Cook’s letter attributes weak iPhone sales to extremely poor performance in China. All things considered, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given the avalanche of reports regarding weaker than expected demand for the iPhone XR.

Netflix to ‘Bird Box’ fans: Please stop blindfolding yourselves and walking around outside
We are two days into the New Year, and already people are insistent on disabusing you of the notion that humanity is turning a corner. That there’s reason for hope. Why, just a few days ago we saw the unit of the military in charge of our nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile cracking jokes on Twitter about how big its bombs are.
Jeff Bezos rode an actual horse into a Western-themed apparel store the other day. And now, not only did tens of millions of you stream Netflix’s insane Bird Box movie, but the streaming video giant actually had to hop on to Twitter today and warn you all to stop trying to do the Bird Box challenge.
So much for any hope for a normal year after our crazy collective 2018.

This ancient Doritos bag is a reminder of how filthy humans are
You probably never spare a thought for your trash once you haul your bin to the curb and it’s whisked away to a magical land dump where nobody ever has to look at it, but not all garbage ends up where it’s supposed to. As humans, we do a terrible job of keeping the Earth clean, and we’ve been littering for a long, long time.
A great reminder of that sad fact is this decades-old Doritos bag which was recently found washed ashore off the coast of North Carolina. At some point, likely several decades ago, this thin plastic container found its way into the ocean, and aside from some faded colors and a few holes it’s in remarkable shape.

You really should have this $15 portable mini tire inflator in your car
Winter is officially here and along with the cold weather, there are some things you’re supposed to do that most people don’t bother with. Among them is topping off the air in your car tires, and it’s a pretty important one that’s often overlooked. Cold air obviously compresses the air in your tires and typically drops your pressure to below the recommended range. If you had a DBPOWER Portable Mini 12V Tire Inflator in your car like you should, filling up your tires would only take a minute and you wouldn’t have to bother pumping quarters into the air pump at your local gas station.
DBPOWER Portable Mini 12V Tire Inflator, Auto Air Compressor for Cars, Bikes, Motorcycles and I…: $14.99
Here are the highlights from the product page:
- 【VERSATILE AND USEFUL】 This mini-sized DBPOWER tire inflator is a very useful tool to have in your car or garage. It’s so compact then it can be held in your hand. Designed to inflate tires for cars, bikes and motorcycles, it can be use with an array of other inflatables thanks to the 3 nozzle adaptors included. It’s a great companion to have with you on the road, on a trip, or vacation.
- 【EASY AND FAST TO USE】 It may be compact, but it is not lacking in inflation power! It will inflate a standard mid-sized car tire from 0-35 psi in 10 minutes. You may be thinking this is not that fast, but considering this pump can fit in the palm of your hand, it’s a pretty impressive speed. Simply plug into a car cigarette lighter socket, start inflating and manually turn off the compressor once the desired pressure has been reached.
- 【COMPACT SIZE FOR EASY STORAGE】 One of the best benefits of this tire pump has to be its size. Designed small and light, it can easily be held with one hand. This makes it great to use for inflating smaller items such as sports balls. It really doesn’t take up any space at all and can easily be stored in places such as a glovebox or under a car seat.
- 【LONGER POWER CORD】 The charging cable is 3m long enabling you to reach all four car tires of even longer model cars without difficulties! Don’t be inconvenienced or annoyed again by those inferior air pumps that can barely reach the back tires!
- 【BUY WITH CONFIDENCE】 All customers are backed by our 12-month “No Questions Asked” warranty. Tech support and professional customer service are available should you have any problems.

Window 10 overtakes Windows 7, becoming the most popular desktop OS in the world
Three and a half years after being released, Windows 10 has finally toppled Windows 7’s to become the most popular desktop operating system on the planet. That’s according to the December OS market share statistics from analytics firm Net Applications, which show that Windows 10 managed to grab 39.22% of the market, while Windows 7 lagged behind at 36.9%. It’s the first month ever in which Windows 10 has been on top.
This is notable for a variety of reasons, the first being that Windows 7 managed to sustain its lead for as long as it did. Coming on the heels of the disastrous Windows Vista, it’s no surprise Windows 7 quickly shot to the top. Then, when Windows 8 underwhelmed, millions opted to stick with Windows 7 rather than upgrade.
