Scientists taught AI to spot Alzheimer’s years before traditional diagnosis

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating brain disorder that has no known cure. Studies have shown that you can improve your chances of keeping it at bay by, say, drinking a lot of coffee, but that’s not going to eradicate the disease or make a positive Alzheimer’s diagnosis any less troubling.

As with any disease, early diagnosis can be a big advantage for doctors in treating Alzheimer’s, and drugs that combat the disease are most effective if used early on. Now, researchers from UC San Francisco have taught an AI to stop the signs of the disease in brain scans up to six years before a diagnosis would normally have been given.

It’s not just Apple: Baidu CEO warns employees that ‘winter is coming’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As China continues to suffer an economic slowdown as trade-related tensions with the US drag on, the CEO of what is essentially the Google of China has sent out a letter to his employees with an ominous warning drawn from pop culture: Winter is coming.

Baidu CEO Robin Li wrote in his letter that the Beijing-based search engine company earned 100 billion yuan (the US equivalent of $14.6 billion) in revenue last year. But analysts, according to The South China Morning Post, had forecast 101.45 billion yuan, with the revenue miss coming as the second-largest economy in the world continues to be saddled with its slowest growth in decades, blamed in large measure on the US trade war, which has spurred hiring freezes and job cuts in China.

Apple might use smart fabrics to make future electronic devices

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A few years ago, Google unveiled a bunch of bold plans for the future of technology, including Project Jacquard, which aimed to add smart features to clothing that would give users the ability to perform various tasks on their devices by simply touching their clothes. Levi’s partnered with Google to launch a first smart jacket, which hit stores in late 2017. It turns out that Apple is also interested in intelligent fabric, but that doesn’t mean it’ll make any Apple Jackets of its own.

China’s lunar probe sends back its first photos of the far side of the Moon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s not all that often that China breaks entirely new ground when it comes to space science but that’s exactly what the country did earlier today by successfully landing its Chang’e 4 spacecraft on the Moon’s surface. China’s space agency was quick to post new photos snapped from the lander, declaring the touchdown and deployment of its lunar rover a success.

This is the very first time that any country has performed a soft landing or rover deployment on the far side of Earth’s natural satellite, and it’s a huge win for Chinese scientists who have been planning out this mission for years.

Disney officially closed out 2018 in style. The company added a few extra billion to its coffers thanks to an insanely successful run at the box office over the past 12 months, releasing one hit after another.

And the company is poised to do it again this year, with a slate of ten 2019 releases — almost all of which should be monster successes for the company.

NASA’s first planetary defense mission will send a spacecraft crashing into an asteroid

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The relentless march of technology is allowing scientists to consider the possibility of human exploration of the Solar System and beyond but, even as we dream of the day where man sets foot on Mars, we have to consider how we’ll protect our home planet from major threats in the future. The possibility of an asteroid-borne apocalypse is a real one, and NASA wants to make sure mankind is prepared to defend itself from such events.

To that end, NASA is already planning the first real planetary defense test mission. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART for short) is a planned mission that will send a spacecraft designed as a “kinetic impactor” directly into a non-threatening asteroid in order to test the feasibility of using a similar system for avoiding an asteroid strike in the future.

Developer dreams up a stunning macOS-style menu bar for iOS

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The 2018 iPad Pros are the best tablets money can buy right now. They are more powerful than most computers, including some MacBooks and iMacs, according to benchmark tests, and have fantastic potential. The new iOS tablets can easily replace computers for most needs, but they’re still not true laptop or desktop alternatives.

I would love an iPad Pro experience that was more like what macOS has to offer, although that’s not where Apple’s iOS is heading. Apple has always maintained that it’s not making touchscreen laptops and that it doesn’t intend to merge iOS and macOS. But a developer just proved that it’s not that hard to bring one of the best things of macOS — the iconic menu bar — to iOS apps.
