Withings’ new watch will offer the same game-changing ECG feature as Apple’s latest

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At CES this week, French consumer electronics company Withings is set to show off its forthcoming Withings Move ECG, a product it bills as the first analog watch to offer the same game-changing feature for which Apple’s newest Watch Series 4 attracted so much attention and headlines when it was unveiled. It’s right there in the name of the new Withings’ device – the ability to take eletrocardiogram (ECG) readings on-demand, which will let people presumably do a better job of monitoring their cardiovascular health and hopefully even detect heart conditions like atrial fibrillation, or AFib for short.

The Move ECG combines what Withings touts as medical-grade heart monitoring technology and such features as up to one-year battery life. “With Move ECG we have created a cardiovascular early warning system that can be worn every day, can capture and record cardiovascular events as they occur and help reduce the risks of heart disease,” said Withings president Eric Carreel.

In terms of how it works, the watch is fitted with three electrodes. Two are housed inside the main body, while the third is fitted in the stainless steel bezel. To take a reading, the user only needs to touch both sides of the bezel to start recording. It takes less than 30 seconds to complete, after which the results are synced automatically with the Health Mate app which shows whether a heart is beating normally or not.

In addition to being able to connect with third-party apps like Apple Health and Google Fit, the Move ECG also sports features like sleep tracking and activity and workout tracking. The heart monitoring, though, is certainly the feature that will attract the most attention here, and for good reason. Withings points to statistics like these from the CDC, which estimate that some 6 million people in the US have AFib. It’s a serious form of irregular heart rhythm that can lead to results like shortness of breath and heart failure, in addition to being a major risk for stroke.

The watch is currently under review for FDA clearance as well as clearance in Europe. Withings expects to make it available in the second quarter of the year for $129.95, with a watch face that comes in either black or white in addition to offering users a variety of wristband colors and material options.

How to stream the 2019 Golden Globes online or watch on TV this Sunday

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The new year has officially arrived, which means awards season is here as well. It starts with the 76th Golden Globe Awards this Sunday, January 7th with hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg set to take the stage at 5 PM PST / 8 PM EST. It’s all the fun of the Academy Awards without quite as much controversy, and we might get a clue as to whether or not Black Panther made as big an impact on voters as it did on the general public.

Unlike its counterparts, the Golden Globes honor the best in film and television, with dramas and comedies across both mediums nominated for dozens of awards. Despite hitting theaters less than two weeks ago, Vice managed to rack up six nominations — more than any other film. On the television side, The Assassination of Gianni Versace paced the competition, but over a dozen shows received multiple nominations this year.

Brilliant new ‘Avengers: Endgame’ theory proposes a happy ending that would still be tragic

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Know this: when you watch Avengers: Endgame for the first time in late February, Marvel will shock you once again. The end will mostly be happy and our favorite heroes will certainly undo the massive genocide that broke our hearts in Infinity War, but such an undertaking will require plenty of sacrifices. That much is clear from what Thanos did to accomplish his mission. Say what you will about the titan, but his version of a happy ending also included heartbreak. That said, with the weekend slowly fading away, now is the perfect time to catch up with a great fan theory that proposes a brilliant-yet-painful end for Avengers 4.

A hidden world in the NES ‘Legend of Zelda’ was just uncovered 30 years later

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the more remarkable things about the original Nintendo is that many of the console’s more popular games — from Super Mario Bros. 3 to Tecmo Bowl — are still playable and thoroughly enjoyable. Sure, the 8-bit graphics can’t hold a candle to what you’ll find on more modern-day consoles, but the wild success Nintendo saw with the NES Classic underscores just how much fun many of those older games are.

Of course, if we’re talking about some of the greatest NES games of all time, there’s no denying that the Legend of Zelda needs to be part of the discussion. The original Legend of Zelda — which was released all the way back in 1986 — was such an iconic hit that it would go on to spawn well more than a dozen offshoots across a number of different consoles.

Apple brings iTunes Movies and AirPlay 2 to Samsung’s 2019 TV lineup

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As Apple continues to make a significant push into services, Samsung earlier today announced that their upcoming lineup of 2019 smart HDTVs will, for the first time, allow users to buy or rent movies and TV shows via iTunes. What’s more, upcoming Samsung models will also ship with support for AirPlay 2. It’s also worth noting that Samsung’s selection of 2018 smart HDTVs will offer similar support once a firmware update rolls out.

Naturally, iTunes access on Samsung TVs will be made available via an app and will also enable users to access their current library of iTunes content. Samsung notes that the app will be available to users across 100 different countries. And in a move that would have seemed downright implausible even a few days ago, users will even be able to search Apple’s iTunes library via Bixby, Samsung’s intelligent virtual assistant.

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Jan. 6)

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There aren’t many quiet weeks on Netflix any more, but this coming week falls into that category. By my count, there are only eight new shows and movies hitting the service this week, though seven of them are originals. On the bright side, some of that content looks pretty exciting, including the final movie in the intriguing Godzilla anime series, and the second season of the comedy Friends from College, starring Keegan-Michael Key.

The sole licensed movie this week is none other than Solo: A Star Wars Story (which might very well be the last Star Wars spin-off we see in theaters for a while). As one of many who decided to skip paying for a ticket to see this one on the big screen, I’ll probably check it out once it starts streaming on Wednesday.

Rare desert snowfall creates a surreal winter wonderland in Arizona

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

You don’t normally think of the desert as having a proper “winter,” but parts of Arizona and New Mexico got more than a light dusting of snow to start the year. The result is sprawling desert vistas glazed in white, and it’s downright lovely.

Snow isn’t entirely out of the ordinary for states like Arizona and New Mexico at this time of year, but it’s certainly not something that happens regularly, and locals wasted no time capturing the surreal sights to share on Twitter and elsewhere.

Spammers bombarded mobile phones in the US with 48 million robocalls in 2018

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Preliminary year-end data is in on the explosive growth in robocalls to cell phones in the US, with more people than ever getting bombarded by calls from spammers and marketers who go to great lengths to trick you into answering their call.

Robocall management company YouMail has been tracking the volume of calls and says that 2018 saw 48 million of them harass cell phone owners in the US last year, up 60 percent from 2017. That’s a huge jump in these types of calls, and while there’s certainly more awareness of the problem now, so far it seems that nothing has really served to effectively put the brakes on this problem. Especially given how easy it is for robocallers to spoof a local number and trick you into answering by making you think you’re getting a legitimate call from your area instead of from a toll-free number you don’t recognize.
