Behold: This is the iPhone app you’ve been waiting for to stop those horrible spam calls
Spam calls have been a problem in the United States for quite some time now, but things have really gotten awful over the past couple of years. The issue varies by region, of course, but here in the New York area I personally get at least a dozen spam calls each week now. It’s truly infuriating. The worst part is there’s really nothing you can do to stop it. There are a bunch of services that help reduce the number of spam calls you get, and some wireless carriers now even offer their own free spam call blocking apps. Unfortunately, they typically don’t work very well.
Because spam calling rings use number spoofing to constantly make calls from new numbers, there’s simply no way to completely eliminate spam calls at this point. Some apps do a better job than others, and Nomorobo is widely regarded as being one of the best options out there. It works fairly well if you’re willing to pay for it, but now there’s a new iPhone app that takes a new approach to spam call blocking. And best of all, it’s currently on sale for free.

Brand new ‘Captain Marvel’ trailer may reveal the origin story of The Avengers
After two trailers and two TV spots for Captain Marvel, Marvel on Monday released an extended look at the upcoming superhero movie during the College Football Playoff National Championships. The clip features some of the footage that we already saw in previous Captain Marvel clips, but it also contains plenty of new gems. In fact, the clip suggests that Captain Marvel may have planted the idea of creating The Avengers in Nick Fury and Agent Coulson’s minds. Oh yeah, Agent Coulson is back. Well, he’s younger because Captain Marvel happens in the 1990s… but he’s still back!

Shots fired: T-Mobile scorches AT&T for updating 4G phones with a fake 5G icon
LTE networks have become so expansive and reliable in the United States that it can be difficult to remember what life was like before 4G LTE. But try, if you will, to recall the ridiculousness that took place just prior to LTE’s proliferation. Wireless carriers in the US were so eager to beat each other to launching 4G LTE networks that they decided to “rebrand” older 3G HSPA+ technology as 4G. It was stupid and annoying, and it was tremendously confusing for consumers.
Well, we have some news for those of you who might not be old enough to have been around to enjoy it. You all get to relive it with us now, because the past is repeating itself. And once again, AT&T is leading the charge following its decision to mislead subscribers by slapping a silly new “5G” icon on 4G smartphones.

The tech Apple needs to make the no-notch iPhone of our dreams is almost here
The iPhone X notch that Apple introduced in late 2017 is a compromise between gorgeous design and sophisticated functionality. Apple wanted to make an all-screen iPhone for years, but it waited for technology to catch up with its dreams. But the iPhone maker couldn’t create a phone with a screen that occupies the entire front of a phone in 2017. The notch had to exist, to house all those smartphone features that can’t be relocated or killed, including the new Face ID facial recognition system that had no rivals over on Android. Apple kept in place the iPhone X design last year, and it’s expected to do the same thing in 2019. But the tech Apple needs to kill the notch is already here, and 2020 may bring us the iPhone of our dreams.

The company that launched the world’s first foldable phone just demoed a rollable keyboard
We didn’t see the Royole FlexPai coming back in November, which happens to be the world’s first foldable phone(image above). Royole is a Chinese device maker you probably never heard of, but the vendor came out with a foldable handset that you can already buy just as we were wondering whether Samsung would get the title or whether Huawei will beat the Korean giant with a foldable design of its own. Neither company is ready to sell foldable smartphones, but we do expect both Samsung and Huawei to deliver more polished experiences than the FlexPai. That’s not to say the Chinese company will not improve its foldable display tech. At CES 2019, Royole unveiled a rollable keyboard that can be used on any surface and connect to devices via Bluetooth.

IBM was the top patent recipient in 2018 for the 26th year in a row
For the 26th year in a row, IBM earned more patents than any other US company in 2018 — 9,100, to be exact, with more than a third of those the result of the computing giant’s work in artificial intelligence as well as in cloud and quantum computing.
The total, and IBM’s ranking, comes courtesy of the research service IFI Claims, and among the more than 1,600 AI-related patents IBM secured during 2018 was one for Project Debater. That’s the name of what IBM Research says is a first-of-its-kind AI system that can actually debate humans on complex topics. Inventors at IBM, as part of this project, patented a way for machine learning to identify evidence like relevant text segments to support or oppose a claim or topic under consideration, an advancement that could be used to make breakthroughs in how machines and humans interact with each other.
“The strategic use of intellectual property has been at the core of IBM’s success throughout our 108-year history,” IBM Research lab director and vice president of research Jeff Weisler told BGR. “We have always sought an approach to patenting that balances proprietary and open innovation.
“Patents allow us to grow and advance technology to solve the toughest problems out there and recognize the important work of thousands of talented IBM inventors. Our leadership in AI, cloud computing, security and quantum computing patents speaks to IBM’s commitment to research and development in these important areas.”
IBM goes on to explain in a company blog post today that the work in these and other areas often begins long before there is any associated practice enterprises uses for the technology the company is probing. Nevertheless, the company throughout this year explored many disparate areas of technology — such as ways to promote health and safety, patenting methods for smart wearables to communicate with electronic components embedded in prostheses, from hearing aids to prosthetic arms. The company also earned patents for blockchain technology as well as for quantum computing uses.
The company secured more than 2,000 cloud computing-related patents, as well as more than 1,400 cybersecurity patents. Regarding that latter category, one such patent was for an AI-powered security approach to combat voice phishing activity that uses a question-and-answer system to monitor and analyze a voice conversation between two parties. The purpose is to identify attempts by one party to deceive the other and would alert the potential victim in real time.
“We are all mindful of the impact of climate change on our planet, and of the potential of technology to help mitigate and manage some of its effects,” IBM’s blog post continues. “To that end, in 2018 IBM researchers patented a diagnostic tool that could use machine learning and image analysis to help scientists identify a plant’s species, diagnose and recommend a treatment. We’ve also developed an early detection system to identify and monitor potentially disruptive temperature variations, which can affect — among other things — oxygen levels and nutrients for marine life.
“It is a privilege to work with such a talented group of inventors, scientists and thinkers, and it’s even more rewarding to see these colleagues recognized for their achievements and contributions to their respective fields. The outstanding innovations from IBM researchers around the world who contributed to this record patent year are truly leading the way for the future — helping to make business and society smarter, safer and more sustainable.”

Spotify is turning its Discover Weekly playlist into a brand-sponsored moneymaker
Spotify is embarking on a new way to make money from its product in addition to established revenue generators, like converting as many of its tens of millions of active users as possible into paid subscribers to its premium tier.
The company announced one such new moneymaker today.
